Lash Out Series, Part One: Eyelash Extensions {PLUS A GIVEAWAY!}

All your questions about lash extensions ANSWERED!

I have used every possible kind of eyelash pumping invention on the planet.

My eyelash explorations include: Lash extensions, falsies (many different types & brands), lash serum and mascara.

Each have their own pro’s and (aside from just growing bangin’ lashes on your own) each have con’s.

When I am looking into something new like this I always find it frustrating to ask questions from experts because they are almost always partial to one or the other. I am not. So I will lay out the info (impartially) and let you decide for yourself, since you know you better than I do.

Starting with lash extensions:
I enlisted my friend (and lash girl) Latisha to help me answer some of these questions.

What are they?
Lash extensions are black, thick, curled synthetic hairs that are glued individually to your natural lashes. One by one.
It’s one of those awesome beauty rituals that an old cowboy would have you committed for doing:)

Pros:

Long, black, thick lashes 24/7
Cuts down get ready time (no need for mascara or even top liner most of the time)
Swimming, sleeping, working out, no time for makeup? You still got lashes!

Cons:

Price
Lashes require special care
Lash fills are required every 2-4 weeks

Questions:

Will lash extensions damage my lashes?

They shouldn’t but they could. This all comes down to who is applying your lashes. Do not go to anyone until you have seen before and afters and spoken to at least one of their clients. These are your eyelashes but more importantly YOUR EYEBALLS! Don’t let anyone near them who doesn’t know what they are doing. If they are not applied correctly you could damage your natural lashes, waste your money and subject yourself to an eye infection. If you don’t know where to start try searching HERE for an expert in your area. These girls have all gone through extensive training, although I’d still ask for before and afters and a client referral, just in case.

What do lash extensions cost?

The prices for these babies vary drastically, but I would say for a sought after expert, expect to pay around $150 for the initial set and $75 for each fill. They should be filled every 2-4 weeks. It’s different for everyone based on how well you take care of them and how thick your natural lashes are. If the price is a lot less you will want to make extra sure that they are experienced, they take their time (anything less than an hour for a full set could be a red flag) and have return clients.

How do I care for lash extensions?

After application you need to keep them dry for 48 hours. This is will make a huge difference in How long the lashes last. Latisha says after 8 years of doing lashes this is her #1 tip to keep them lasting longer!

Touch them as little as possible. This is extremely important, not just for your lash extensions but for your natural lashes as well. Running picking and pulling on your ext will loosen the glue and often damage the natural lash. When you get ext you are committing to keep your mitts off, if you don’t think that’s possible (i.e. if you constantly over pluck your brows cause of OCD ) this may not be a good choice for you. The last thing you want is to damage your peepers.

Avoid oil based anything around the eyes. Use oil-free makeup remover like THIS ONE and eye creams that are less greasy.

Only wear mascara on your extensions if you want a dramatic look. it has to be water based, not oil based. only apply it on the tips and not on the base. My suggestion is not using mascara everyday just once in a awhile. You really don’t need them cause you lashes should give you a great look with out it.

Avoid directly soaking your lashes. I know this is sometimes hard but if you try not to they last a lot longer.
You can swim, exercise, go to the spa whatever you want (after the 48 hrs) the more excessive you are the less they stay in so you might need to have them filled more than normal.
To keep your natural lashes stronger and last longer, I like using amplifeye lash and brow forifier its just like latisse but all natural with out all the crazy side affects. If you decide to take them off, have them removed by your lash stylist so you don’t ruin your natural lashes

Keep them from tangling and bunching with the lash wand not your fingers (I feel like I can’t stress that enough)

Here’s a cool trick for keeping them really straight. I do this right out of the shower.

Put your hair dryer on a medium setting and low heat, hold the nozzle below your chin pointing upward and dry your lashes.
It will comb them and keep them in place, and it only takes seconds and (best part) it’s hands free:)

UPDATE:

I no longer have eye lash extensions. I started to worry that they were damaging my natural lashes and when I did get them out I had lost a lot of lash. I still think many people think the pros out weigh the cons but I think my preference is to just rock my natural lashes most of the time and add falsies when I want  to look glam.

    I’ve had lash extensions since November, and I can’t imagine my life without them anymore! I love that even when I’m too lazy to do my make-up or fix my hair, I still look okay. I was a bit nervous before putting them on because I’ve heard that they make your own lashes thinner, and that they fall easily off, but so far I’ve had no problem whatsoever!

    I just followed Latisha on both Instagram (sylviacocopia) and Facebook (Sylvia Solberg). Fingers crossed! 🙂

    I followed on Facebook– thanks for the tips on eyelash extensions. I’ve been considering them, but wondered if they would be ok since I am a contact lens wearer. I also have HORRIBLE vision so I have to wear my contacts or my glasses– and my natural lashes hit my glasses already. But– they are straight and not dark so they don’t look ok without some help.

    I am so glad you are talking about lashes. I love all your makeup tips and just the other day I was thinking, “man, my face looks amazing, but I think I need some new mascara because my lashes are just kind of blah.” Have you used the eye serum without lash extensions? I love my blue eyes, so I don’t want to risk using Latisse and having them darken, wondering if this works as well?

    Hola! mi nombre es Andrea y soy de muy lejos, queria compartir mi experiencia en aplicación similar que se hace aquí en Buenos Aires, Argentina, son realmente buenas, soy fotógrafa y maquillo y les sugiero a las novias que voy a fotografiar que se las apliquen con expertos , hacen el ojo bien bonito! Creo que la aplicación no debe ser constante, el producto que se usa termina lastimando la pestaña y la piel. Usar un producto especial para retirarlas y aceite de almendras, una gota para cuidar nuestras pestañas naturales, masajear muy suave las pondrá fuertes. He visto amigas tener debilitadas sus pestañas propias por no tener cuidados especiales. Pero… quedamos tan hermosas!!! Me encanta tu Blogh y todos los consejos que brindas, me gusta que seas alguien normal, con una casa y familia, ya que aveces es dificil seguir teniendo las costumbres de soltera jajajaj!     I have been following your blog now for a few months, and I have to say.. you have completely made a difference in the way I look at myself (and apply make-up 🙂 ). I send your link to all my friends. I especially love this post because I have been self-conscious of my lashes for such a long time.. They just do not grow! I have looked into getting extensions, but unfortunately student loans have taken over my life! I have followed on instagram and FB. Thanks for everything!

    I use LATISSE and it seriously WORKS! It is amazing I love it, and have not experienced any of the side-effects at all. It does cost 89 dollars for a small bottle but I have made mine last since October. I have gotten so many compliments on my lashes 🙂

    I am now following Latisha on FB and Instragram. I was so excited to hear that she lived in St. George, I live in Cedar City, but then read a little of her blog and realized she moved. Bummer! I need my lashes done for a vacation this fall and was not thrilled with the results last time. It looks like she does great work! I definately want someone who knows what they are doing next time.

    thanks for the 411!! I really needed this! I am getting my very first pair for my wedding. The girl who did them did awful… They looked nice, but they made all my real lashes fall out:( I normally have longish thick lashes… I appreciate them more now that they have grown back!!

I.e. the quick make up tutorial you had with your son around and it only took 4 min. i always wear fake lashes and i have thought about doing the eyelash extensions but I’m afraid of how good they would look.

    Thanks for you tips! I use coconut oil for my lashes. I didn’t like the work that false lashes. I also don’t like that they damaged my eye lashes. I have recently fallen in love with Younique’s 3D Fiber Lashes. It is an amazing product and makes my natural lashes look so much longer!!! It is better than anything I have ever tried!

    I tried using olive oil, but didn’t notice any real results…Planning on giving castor oil a try! I’ve also heard coconut oil works, which I’m inclined to believe since it’s basically a miracle product.

    When I got lash extensions, the lady applying them got glue in my eye–and yep, i was left with a chemical burn! Now there is forever a red spot in my eye 🙁

    Now, I use Latisse and I LOVE it!!! 🙂 I wouldn’t trade it for the world! There are actually no side effects either. The “darkening of the eye” that was reported was extremely rare, and only happened when the liquid was put inside the eye (not across the lashline as latisse is meant to be used)

    Wow! Thanks for sharing. BTW I’m blessed with dark natural eyelashes that could be extended just with the application of mascara on lower lashes. Normally, I use nude makeup and that gives me the perfect look, I guess. My latest mascara is NYX Doll Eye Mascara that I bought here http://www.trend-labs.com/i/B000WYZ9Q4 and it already became my favorite beauty kit 🙂

    I skimmed the comments and did see my question asked. I just got my extensions removed for the summer and am looking into serums to help them grow and thicken up. I saw you recommended one in this post but what I am wondering is if there is another place besides Amazon to get it. I’ve heard it can be hard to know if you are getting the actual product you are order from places like Amazon when it comes to salon type quality products. Love your blog I am a long time follower!

    Yours look so natural, it’s pleasant to see 🙂 I had those “babies” and not the cheapest ones 😀 But my friend grew so long eyelashes with the help of simple castor oil, and I did the same thanks to Cherish Lash serum. The effect is quite long (several years) so you spend less with more natural result. This is what I suggest to my ladyfriends 🙂

    I want super long lashes. I haven’t ever tried anything, no lashes, special serums or anything because I am to afraid. I have liked both pages on the instagram and FB above but you do give good information because I have a lot of friends who are getting the lashes. One has spent $250 and another $75 and of course prices are higher/lower than those, but how do you know you’re actually getting good lashes? Thanks for the info!

    I thought I’m an expert but you know more )) Girls just don’t forget to let your eyelashes rest a while. A month or two is just perfect. Apply some natural oil or effective conditioner on your eyelashes meanwhile – for me Cherish Lash serum works the best.
