Changes – My favorite products for maturing skin

Yesterday I talked about the fact that our faces and bodies change as we age and so its only natural our beauty routines should as well.  I’ve posted some of my very favorite makeup tips for aging here, but that was a YEAR ago! So it definitely needs an update. Today I’ll start with my favorite sparkling products and next week I’ll post some more of the best beauty/makeup tips & tricks I’ve learned since.

Glam Glow Thirsty Mud:
It is so hard to get a moisture that goes in deep and doesn’t leave you greasy but guess what!? It EXISTS! This creamy spectacular goodness has answered all of my moisturizing prayers. I smear it on like a mask right before bed  ever couple of days (it smells delicious BTW) and then I sleep in it. When I wakeup I rinse my perfectly moisturized face and try to stop touching it.
Budget friendly Option – Queen Helene Facial Masks:
In the world of Drug store moisture masks this one is raining queen in my opinion.

Hourglass Primer Serum Hydrating Primer
I LOVE the way this primer feels and I especially love the way it looks on mature skin. It feels silky and brings a radiance and dewiness that will really rock your world. It also has all kinds of benefits for your skin like vitamins and essential oils.
More budget friendly option – Porefessional:
This one is the ultimate primer for filling pores but it doesn’t do much for the moisture and the silkiness.

Clarisonic
I’ve talked about this before but when it comes to cleaning the skin well and making it look fresh this is a must have.
If you haven’t already bought it, I know you’ve heard of it and if you’re skeptical get one from Sephora and try this baby!! You can always return it if you don’t fall in love!
Budget friendly version: Skin Sonic which is a quarter of the price! I haven’t tried this myself but here is a great review on it.

IT Cosmetics Hello Light? Luminizer
I chose this beautiful formula because it has anti-aging properties in it as well as a very subtle non-sparkly illuminating effect. It is a gorgeous soft creme.
Budget friendly option: Maskcara IIID Pretty in Pearl-
When I formulated my illuminator I was very picky! I didn’t want it to be glittery or too iridescent or too bold. I wanted it to make the skin glow without looking like makeup. It makes the skin look blurred and soft and radiant.

JolieMD Metamorphosis
This was sent to me a few months ago. When I read that that is to was supposed to: make the skin look radiant, shrink pores, soften fine lines and wrinkles and fight acne I was pretty much rolling my eyes but ladies. This is the real deal! I have never tried anything like it!  I always try my skincare products for at least a couple of months and then I try not using them again before I ever recommend them to you (cause sometimes you love something at first and then change your mind, other times you think you love it but if you stop using it you don’t notice a difference etc.) Well this stuff ran the gauntlet and came out a winner! I loved it at first use, waking up with soft tight skin and continued using it and getting so many compliments on my skin. Then I stopped a few weeks ago for a while, just to make sure, and I was really missing it. I felt like my pores were growing and my general texture wasn’t as smooth.
It’s pretty expensive, it seems like most age related products are for whatever reason but I have continued purchasing, cause it’s worth it to me!
They were gracious enough to offer to giveaway a set, so if it’s out of your budget now, enter to get one for zero dollars!

Rita Hazan Root Concealer
Right now I’m growing out my roots (just because I have no idea what my natural hair color is at this point, it hasn’t been seen in its virgin state since the mid 90’s) which generally just makes me look like I’m balding because the hair growing in is so light. Now that I have this spray I just shoot some in my part and carry on with life. It covers my roots perfectly. When my mom saw this trick she was so excited, touching up her grays can be a tedious task and they grow back so fast. Shooting some of this over them is quick, easy and effective.

UD All-Nighter
Instead of setting with powder (which can make the skin look dull and can sink into creases and crevices) I prefer using a setting spray.
This one is BY FAR the best one that I’ve used. It doesn’t feel sticky or weird on the skin at all, you won’t even know its there – except that your makeup will last and last. When I leave the house without it I definitely know a difference.

Riiviva PMD
I posted a while back about this little miracle and I couldn’t help but add it to this list as well. It has honestly changed my skin than I would have ever imagined. I could never get my makeup to look as smooth and flawless as I wanted before I found this. I tried every foundation on the market and always wondered what other people were doing to get it to look so smooth! It wasn’t til I found this that I realized it wasn’t the foundation, it was my skin! Getting rid of that dead outer layer of skin has made it so much smoother. Not to mention all of my other products work better because now they can sink in without a barrier! I’m a believer.

Beauty Blender
What is amazing about this sponge is that it blends your foundation into your skin in a perfect amount. A fine enough layer that it won’t move around or settle into creases and a heavy enough layer that gives you a flawless finish. You wet and wring the egg shaped applicator then dab your foundation onto your skin in a small stippling motion (I used it in this video if you’d like to see it in action)
For budget: I haven’t tried it yet because it’s out at my local Ulta but I had many of readers suggest the Real Techniques version, they say it’s the closest match to date!

Age is beauty.

It’s not that she’s particularly concerned about it or mentions it much but if you asked my mom if she thinks she’s pretty she’d probably say something like “Oh, no. Not really, I’m just old.”
For her those two things are mutually exclusive.
Which is actually quite ridiculous and I’ll show you why.

Beautiful at any age.

I would argue that at 60 years old and having given birth to 9 children she is more beautiful today than she ever has been.
Look at her eyes. There are no short cuts to getting eyes like that. I imagine it took thousands of tears to polish them enough to sparkle so softly and sweetly.
You can’t see it in the photo but she has the most beautiful voice. That voice took millions of sweet words, hundreds of lullabies and …only one or two “CARALYN BROOK!!”s to become as smooth and warm as it is.
Her smile. How many happy moments and completely hilarious jokes did it take to leave those gorgeous smile impressions around her mouth? They linger after each smile as if her face remembers too many joyful moments for them to be fully erased.

I used to be so petrified of getting older. So afraid of wrinkles or pregnancy weight or for my hair to turn gray, but not any more. I know that if every year I give all I have to give, laugh as much as I can, treat every new experience as an adventure and every new person as a chance to love and care for someone than I will be more beautiful at 102 than I was at 22.
I can’t wait for the chance.

My mom is beautiful with or without makeup but we have found there are makeup tricks that make her feel her prettiest and it is only natural that as your skin and face change your makeup routine should evolve as well.
these are some awesome tips for ageless beauty
So here are some of my favorite findings:

No more big pores!
POREfessional

Honestly, I don’t know if I would believe this if I hadn’t taken the photo myself. The difference is pretty dang impressive. This silky stuff creates a smooth surface for applying makeup and that includes filling pores.

Instant Facelift!

Filled with Anastasia Brow Powder Duo Ebony

As we grow older often times those eyebrows start to migrate and they drag your eye and your expressions down with it!
My advice for this might seem a little radical but I think it’s by far the best option. ( I added the falling brows to this photo because we got rid of my mom’s a few years ago)

1. Locate your brow bone by feeling for it above your eye socket. Your brow bone is a rough guide to where your brows should be.

2. Wax or tweeze all the hair below your natural brow (brow bone) Even if that means you will only have half of your brow.

3. With an angled brush and some brown shadow fill in the arch by drawing in your brow above the ridge of your brow bone.

(Find a more thorough tutorial on filling in your brows here)

Amazing foundation!
NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Stromboli

I always try to find the least expensive products I can but when it comes to foundation I get a little less stressed about price and more concerned with performance.
You wear it every day and only have to replace it 2 or 3 times a year! It is TOTALLY worth a splurge. I actually found this foundation on accident when I was testing swatches on my hand for color I grabbed this (cause it was the closest thing to me at Sephora) and rubbed it into my hand, I had to double take. Usually when I rub products on my hand the lines in my skin become exaggerated. When I rubbed this on it smoothed out my skin and made such a smooth creamy finish I was flabbergasted! I snagged a sample of it and have been in love ever since. Plus it has good yellow undertones which I prefer on most skin.

I am working on a post right now on how to get the sheerest most natural application, so check back this week for that as well.

blush & bronzer
Urban Decay Baked Bronzer
Tarte Cheek Stain in Tickled
When I do my mom’s makeup I can’t tell you the difference it makes when I brush on the blush and bronzer.
It brings so much energy and warmth to her face. As scary as a highly saturated blush may seem they really look beautiful when mixed with the skin.

I hope this helps!
