It’s march.
There is absolutely NOTHING I like more about spring than the return of sunshine.
Disagree if you like but if there is anything I know, I know this:
I look better tan.
Call me crazy but I think most people look better with a little color.
Why?
You look healthier
Your eyes looks brighter.
Your teeth look whiter.
You look thinner.
Your muscles look more defined.
Red spot, blemishes & cellulite almost disappear.
Outfits look more put together.
..and many other things I can’t recall at the moment.
Unfortunately if done improperly tans also can also:
make you look like an umpa-loompa
make you look dirty
give you skin cancer, wrinkles and dark spots
leave you streaky and patchy
make you smell like tequila and corn chips
The line is a fine one.
I have spent enough time on the Snooki side of it that I learned how to stay on the Jen Aniston side.
Even if you are an avid sun tanner I very much recommend adding some sunless products to your regime. It will save your skin and you’ll get so much more bang for your buck.
Products:
Sun Labs:
I get the Sun Labs Overnight tan in Medium – It’s been the perfect color on every skin tone I’ve tried it on.
I wish I worked for these guys cause I guarantee I would be their best employee. Sadly they don’t even know I exist. I am just a lowly sun labs groupie. I have posted about this stuff relentlessly so to those of you that are long time followers, I am sorry, but I am sure you agree that the newbies need to know!
Why it rocks:
It has a bronzer which is good for those of use who have instant gratification needs.
It doesn’t smell AT ALL. This is a huge one for me. I hate the smell of tanner so bad that I’d almost rather be white most days (in my case white is more of a pale gray-green no such thing as milky white over here)
The color is VERY natural and not at all orange.
Cons? It’s color isn’t as long lasting as some others I have used, but to me the benefits out weight this and since it doesn’t stink or streak, I don’t mind re-applying it.
This stuff is fast and fabulous.
I like to use a spray on my face and chest because it’s quick and those are the areas I need to apply most often (since I exfoliate my face I lose most the tanner regularly)
I have never known it to clog my pores but I do wash my face every night. Side note here: many self tanners HAVE clogged my pores including sun labs SPRAY VERSION, the lotion version has not.
Cons: I think if you used the spray can on your whole body it would be difficult to get even and you would run out really fast.
Jergens:
Don’t. Freak. Out.
They fixed the smell.
I promise.
Aside from what used to be an icky after-smell, this is an awesome product. You can use it like you would any other lotion except it gives you buildable color that won’t be streaky because it’s so gradual.
Procedure:
1. First things first, shave & exfoliate:
In order to avoid the dirt-streaked-spotted-tan you gotta start with debris free skin. Before I do a tanning treatment I take a CSI shower. Like if I was going to commit a crime and didn’t want to leave my DNA trail I would shower like that.
2. Lotion up your dry areas.
Don’t apply regular lotion on your whole body (you want your skin to be able to soak up the tan) you just need a little bit on the extra dry areas so that they won’t look darker than the rest
3. Apply Tanner
Tan one body part at a time. Meaning lower leg, feet, upper leg, bum, tummy, chest, decolletage, upper arm lower arm & hands. Start with one pump and work up, it’s better to start with less product and build up than to have too much at once.
4. Apply Tanner to your Face:
This is controversial because a lot of people prefer not to tan their faces. I think having a tan face is a major part of the fun. I prefer to have a tan under my makeup too rather than just wear darker makeup or a lot of bronzer because I think it looks more natural and it isn’t as likely to rub off throughout the day.
I have used products that have broken me out but Sun Labs and Tomas do not.
I do wash and exfoliate my face every night though, so I end up reapplying my tan twice as often on my face, which isn’t hard because it’s such a small area.
5. What about my BACK?
Some people have a willing participant around anxiously anticipating the opportunity to tan their back.
But the rest of us are left with a big white spot in the middle…UNTIL NOW!
After my frustration with white-back syndrome came to it’s peak, I got to work finding a cure.
And find one, I did.
6. Reapplication:
When will you need to reapply? Probably every 4 or 5 days but if you are trying to build your tan you will need to do it more often, like every 2 or 3.
It may sound like a lot but if you are in the habit of putting on lotion daily this really won’t cramp your style much.
Maintenance:
You did all this work and by golly it had better last!
Here’s how you get it to:
1. Stay lotioned up. Apply a regular lotion or for added bonus Jergens Natural Glow once or twice a day.
2. Keep your skin moisturized. Did I already say that? Must be prettttty important:)
I hope I covered everything with this one, but let me know if I didn’t!
May your tans be as glowing and gorgeous as you are!
P.S. I have an old tanning video too, if you’d like to check it out. HERE
Oh, and one more thing if you hate using gloves like I do, wash your hands with baking soda afterwords. Tanner will completely wash off!
Post on that HERE

Thanks for the tips! You are awesome
Thank you!
i love self tanner except I get spots on my legs where my hair grows in how do you stop that. It looks like little tiny dots all over my legs
I get those too! I thought I was just a complete failure at self-tanner application. I mean, I still could be if you go by the splotches on my ankles.
Hi ladies, I am a sunless tanning pro. As in that is my job and what I do ALL day–it’s VERY fun! The little dots come from having just shaved and the pores in your skin being opened up. When you rub (or spray) sunless tanner on it gets into the pores causing the dots. This doesn’t happen to everyone it depends on how coarse your hair is and your skin type. If you have this issue shave at least 24 hours BEFORE you apply your sunless product. This allows time for the hair to grow a bit and for your pores to close up. No dots! Hope this helps.
Hey I’m having trouble with applying the loreal sublime tanner. I’m using the method u use when applying but I’m still coming up with streaks. Any other suggestions on applying?
i Do not usually write on blogs! ever your my first! must say you are pretty awesome thanks you summed up everything ive read all in one!!! thanks cant wait to bronze up for my cruise this wk!!!
I am an avid sunless tanner too. I used Loreal Sublime for years. It has a glitter glow to it. But this year I tryed St. Tropez mousse and it is FABULOUS! I used it just yesterday and I had so many compliments on my tan. People thought I had used the tanning bed! I will have to say that you must, must, use the mitt. Where has that been all my life! B/C the mousse can leave a serious stain on your hands if not. Thanks for the tips on these products too! Nice to know what else is out there!!
Yes, I really like St. Tropex as well, it’s a gorgeous color! I tried it last year though and didn’t rebuy it because I still preferred my Sun Labs:) But I am still a total supporter or anything that works!
I’m a huge fan of st. Tropez as well!! Beautiful color also the bare minerals “faux tan” ah- mazing !!
I’m a self tanning junkie and just found the bare minerals “faux tan” a month ago…. oh. my. GOSH! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! best smelling and longest lasting self tanner I’ve found
This was incredibly helpful. My issue with sunless tanning is my face. I’m the palest person ever and I can tan my body, but various tanners make my face break out. I’ll have to try the two you recommended. I am aware, everyone’s skin can react differently, so I won’t get my hopes up in the event that either of them make my face break out.
For me, Jergens was never that awesome. Yeah it did give me a ever so slight “natural glow”, but the problem is, when you’re starting at ground zero of pastiness, you can only get so much darker. It stops at a certain point if I’m using the one for light skin tones. I certainly can’t use the one for darker skin tones because I’m not dark enough to begin with. Sigh.
Ah #whitegirlproblems:) I hear ya! Hopefully these will work better for you, I hate poor clogging tanners! And I agree that Jergens won’t do much if you are super white (white is why I say use it in conjunction with another product) Let me know what you think of these ones!
I am extremely pale – blonde hair, blue eyes. Cara’s video on Sun Labs tanner changed my sunless tanning life. I was so frustrated with ALL tanners that I had given up, but when I saw her post on Sun Labs, I gave in and tried it. The medium color is not at all too dark for me. On top of pale skin, it’s very sensitive, and this tanner doesn’t make me break out either. I think you will be happy with it.
I’m pasty too (like glow in the sunlight, might as well be the color of printer paper pasty) and I used to use the jergens for light skin tones. I recently started using the one for medium and it works so much better!! I highly recommend it since I also had the problem of the lighter one not getting tan enough!
Nordstrom does carry a ‘Hard to Reach’ applicator. It’s $18.00 plus free shipping . You will have to replace the pads eventually, but it says it could last up to 2 years.

good to know! THanks!
Have any tips or products for someone who is allergic to most sunless tanners. I loved the color of the Loreal Sublime but it resulted in hives!! Any ideas??
I second this request. I’m totally allergic to DHA, the active ingredient in self-tanners. I’d love to know if there’s any kind of alternative out there!
I will say I have used Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Leg spray, and DuWop’s Revolution (http://shop.duwop.com/revolotion-1.aspx) to emulate a fake tan. Those are not self-tanning products–they’re more like body make up that you wash off in the shower, but they do work for the short term. However, I’m dying for a non-DHA self-tanner!
Shoot! I imaging if there is one that wouldn’t have the reaction it would be sun labs. It’s paraben free and doesn’t have many of the ingredients in other tanners. I’ll keep a look out though!
Here’s a bunch of non-DHA tanners:
http://voices.yahoo.com/allergic-dha-dha-free-self-tanners-worth-checking-8246795.html?cat=69
On Pintretrest there is a post about tea staining your skin to result in a tan
Have you ever tried BefoRE Sun by Arbonne? I’m super sensitive, and I can use it… It’s the only one that I’ve tried that doesn’t make my skin burn. And, I’m SUPER fair, and pinkish, so self tanners usually make me orange, but this one doesn’t. Here is the product info. http://www.arbonnemarketing.com/PK/dl/pk/975_us_eng.pdf
And you can find it here:
http://www.melissalinden.myarbonne.com
This may sound crazy but I have seen posts that say you can use black tea to “stain” your skin darker- I have never tried it, nor fully researched, but I imagine a little googling would lead you to more info. Seems like a natural option? If it works of course
Try Lush. They have a solid body tint that is wonderful! http://www.lushusa.com/Solid-Body-Tints/solid-body-tints,en_US,sc.html I use it all the time. It is solid, but the cocoa butter melts as it is smothed on your skin. The color is instant, so you know there won’t be any streaks.
BTW, I have naturally pale skin, and I use Black Stocking. They say it is for darker skin tones, but I find it gives me the “tan” I need. The other color is too “pink” and I would not look tanned. Also, you control how much product you put on; less product, lighter tan; more product, deeper tan. There is no doubt what the end result will be. Per my Dermatologist’s orders, this year, my tan will all be “man-made”, even though I live in the pool during our hot AZ summers. I will be lathering on the sunscreen and sun-less tanners this year-that is better than ugly sun damage blotches on your face and chest and skin cancer!
Thanks for the tips, I am going to use them next time I tan! xxx

Awesome! Thanks Maddy!
So funny I just tanned last night. I bought the Sun Labs about three weeks ago and have been using it. I do love the color and Love the way it doesn’t smell or seem to leave traces behind on clothing or sheets. My only negative is that it does seem to fade quick..I usually do two applications back to back then wait 4 or 5 days and reapply. Still seems like its almost totally gone by the 4 or 5 days. Maybe I need to reapply on day 3 and see if I can keep it going. I haven’t tried it on my face yet..Im kinda afraid I’ll look TO dark. But I may try it. Thanks for the tips..awesome post.
Yeah, like I said, it;s my one complaint. If you make sure to keep lotioned up it usually lasts better but I think maybe it’s the smelly stuff that makes it last! You gotta be careful with the face but it is SO nice to have a little color there too!
Mix a little REG Jergens lotion with tanner you use for face if you are concerned too dark. We sell the Sun products at the Dermatologist I work for. Not for much longer I am sure because tanners have really improved over the years and there are some goods ones at the drug stores. Was gong to mention using gloves but saw you covered that–will try the baking soda afterwards next time I tan. Also a Big Thank You to the poster of these self tanning suggestions. Oh The pictures I have seen and the size of the bandages at our office. The culprits: no sun protection AND tanning beds. I will take massaging my skin with lotions over laying in a coffin anyday. Think about it. Also the sun AND/OR smoking ages you quite nicely. The pictures are quite motivating especially for the use of a good facial sunscreen. Elta products rock! If only I was better about this 30 years ago! I now use Elta SPF 30 Facial and get compliments on my skin. I turn the 50 this year and I love it—the compliments that is. I also use the Glo Mineral Cosmetic products. One of the more finely milled mineral products out there. They also rock! (Stop cringing 16 year old daughter)
I laughed at the “CSI shower.” And putting tanner on your back? That’s what husbands (or sisters, or moms, or bffs) are for!
I just ordered everything. Here’s to a fabulously tan summer! Lots of love.
Woohoo! The sexy Hawaiin tan is on it’s way!
Thanks for the tips, especially for the face. I was wondering what the best method was. I took your advice last year about the Sun Labs product and never looked back. Hands down the BEST sunless tanning product I have tried in 20 years! I always get asked what I’ve used because the color is very natural and not orange. THANKS!
So glad you love it too! THanks RAchel!
Woot! Just in time. I should be getting my sun labs today! Thanks for the info
YAY! I am almost out! I need to order it!
This is a great tutorial- I definitely want to try Sun Labs. Question- do you put your tanner on at a particular time of day? I typically have put it on at night to let it soak in for the recommended hours, but I suffer through having to smell it during the night. Also, do you experience issues with it rubbing off on your clothes/sheets? Any guidance you have is much appreciated!
I usually put it on at night. Sun Labs has never gotten on my sheets (I was about 30 minutes before getting in them) and it doesn’t stink at all. Honestly the smell is unbearable to me so that’s what has kept me from most of the other tanning products. Good luck!
I noticed that the Dark from Sun Labs says it last longer (a week). I was afraid to get it because I wasn’t sure how Dark dark was! By any chance have you tried it?
Also, thank you for turning me onto Sun Labs… I don’t self tan because of the after smell. I can smell it from a mile away and it is Ughhh! I just got Sun Labs this weekend and I am completely excited there is no weird after smell.
Thank you!!! I live in Oregon where I’m pretty sure this whole “sun” thing is just a prank the rest of the country is playing on us…
Yeah, it’s totally cold and rainy in Vegas. The weather man is just bluffing you out. I swear!
I tried Sally Beauty Supplies “Tan Wise” I actually read on here, a while back that it was comparable to Sun Labs. I had never done self tanner, so I wanted to go a bit cheap at first. It is AWESOME. I get SO many compliments, and where the heck was I all these years, never having tried self tanner! Definitely recommend it, and its only 10.99 for a nice size bottle. Definitely worth a shot!
OOOHHH I need to try it! THank you!
Is the Tan Wise a spray or a lotion?
they have both
Does the Tan Wise have a smell? If so what does it smell like?
Does the Tan Wise only come in dark though? When I checked their website, that’s the only one I seen.
That is the only one that I have used or seen at Sally’s. But its not super dark in my opinion. I am not sure if you already have a little color. But in order for me to get the color I want, I must apply two days in a row to build it up, maybe 3.
Hi Cara, just wondering what you use to exfoliate your face and body??? Thanks and happy tanning!!!
Hi Linda! I use an exfoliating glove on my body (I just get from walmart) and the clarisonic on my face. I love the St. Ives Apricot scrub though for a budget:) I waited a few years to splurge for the Clarisonic but I totally love it!
Great tips, especially for facial tanner! Have you ever tried Luminess air brush tan? I just got it and I’m afraid to use it haha
haha I am not sure if I have? Try your upper leg as a swatch first!
How do you recommend blending the self tanner in to the tops of your hands? I’ve always had a problem with that!
Great question! Once you have lotioned your hands with regular lotion they are much easier to apply tanner to. I do my hands lats and make sure they are still moist from the lotion, then when I rub the tanner on my hands it goes o smoothly and evenly.
Hi Cara – I loved this article. I am going to try all 3 products. TIP for the tops of hands: I use an old foundation makeup brush, pump a little on it and use the brush to blend on tops of my hands. It works well!
“make you smell like tequila and corn chips”
I literally LOL’d when I read this part… Finally, someone has found the words to describe that awful smell!
Thanks for another great post!
haha thank you! Really though, it’s nasty!
I didn’t even think to use a towel! You rock! Thanks for always posting these! They are SUPER helpful. (p.s. jealous of the blonde hair!)
It works good too! Thanks I am LOVING the blonde, such a nice change!
“CSI shower” LOL
Have you tried the spray Sun Labs? I wondered if that would work just as well on the go?
I did like the Sun Labs Sray but when I used it on my face it totally clogged my pores so I don’t recommend that! FOr my bod it was great
you look absolutely gorgeous!!! I will definitely be trying the towel tip! p.s. can you do a tutorial on how you curl your hair? it looks beautiful and I would LOVE to see a tutorial on that!!!
Here is her twirl curl tutorial: http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/09/21/wedding-hair-twirl-curls/
So i just used the Sun Labs this morning. How long do I have to wait to apply makeup?
Don’t order sun labs! Read my comment below!
You can order Sun Labs through Amazon.com… that way you are not ordering directly from the Sun Labs Company website – just a thought if you still want it and don’t want to have to deal with the delay/mix ups Happy Sunless Tanning!
I usually wait about a half hour (or I apply it at night and sleep on it) Just make sure it’s completely dry and absorbed so that it doesn’t mox with your foundation and make you look dirrrrty!
I am so excited to try Sun Labs…never heard of it (I’m a newbie!) How does this affect the foundation part of your makeup routine? I am clueless about makeup.
Good question! I put it on at night usually so it’s all dried and soaked up by the time I do my makeup. Either way I wait at least a half hour after I apply it to put makeup on so that it doesn’t get all mixed in with the foundation and look dirty.
I was looking for a trick to get my back! I prefer the Loreal Sublime Bronze tanner to the Jergens, but they both are good
I haven’t used it in a long time! I’ll have to give it another shot! Thanks!
So I’m confused…do you use the Sun Labs on your face or the spray Tomas kind? Also, how do you blend it evenly on your feet/ankles/toes?
Thanks!
haha sorry! I use the Sun labs on my whole body and on my face every 4ish days, but since I exfoliate my face nightly I use the Toma’s for re-application or when I am getting white but in too much of a hurry to do my whole body. Then I just spritz some on my face and chest and go!
As a woman of color, I do not tan, but I clicked on this post purely because I wanted to see more of your beautiful hair. The blonde looks quite amazing on you.
Thank you so much! You are so lucky to have some natural color!
I usually never comment on blogs, but I just have to say that you have become my go to beauty guru and I absolutely love your blog, and you. Ever since I found you on Pinterest – everyone is now jealous of my hair and makeup all the time. I can’t wait to try these tips!
Day maker! Thank you so much! I am so happy that these tips are working for you! Thanks so much!
I agree! <3
I love the Jergens express glow. It leave little smell compared to most self tanner and the smell is undetectable if you put some bath and body works lotion on the next day. I’m looking forward to trying the other tanners you mentioned.
I like that stuff too but I am a sucker for the Sun Labs!
Thank you for all the great pointers!
Question: If I use a sunless tanner on my face, can I use the same tinted moisturizer that I use for my fair skin and just add more bronzer? Or should I buy a darker color? I think the color I have now (which is pretty light) is already slightly darker than my face so I usually have to bronze my neck…
Ugh, I always think of more questions after I already submit the first one.
In your picture, was taht after one application or after you built the tan for a couple days?
And how long does the 8 ounce bottle last you if you are always maintaining it?
Good questions! I always buy the big bottle 32oz and it lasts me about 10 months (using it with reckless abandon) I would try your tinted moisture with your tan first and see what you think, it might work just fine and adjust to your color but if it has a chalky effect you’ll want to go up a shade. This photo had a tan I built doing two days in a row, before that I was pretty white. I don’t always keep up my tan:)
Thank you!
OMG, I love your genius idea for the back. I was reading on another blog recently about self tanner and all the readers had the same question.. like how on earth do you do it yourself? Since I’m not married, I can’t imagine having too many volunteers to help rub me down back there anyways!
Siobhan
http://www.chopstick-chic.com
I was pretty excited when I came up with it, I called Nick and he was like, um….cool? So I am glad you think it’s actually cool:) Even being married, I usually am tanning when he’s not around and I don’t want to have to wait, plus he looks at the brown lotion like it’s a disease!
I love that about your hubby looking at it like its a disease. My husband doesn’t like to help me because he says it looks like poo being smeared on my body.
First, would like to comment on how many amazing ideas you have! But the only thing u disagree with is the Sun Labs product, that company is an absolute scam! There are so many terrible complaints out there about them, ladies, DO NOT ORDER SUN LABS!! Just take a look at their Facebook page, its loaded with negative comments. This is also my personal experience. It took me 5 months to get my shipment last year, by the time I got it.. Summer was over also, they sent me the completely wrong package- it was missing the tan extended and a beach bag. I was highly disappointed. Although the products were nice and had a wonderful almond smell, I would much rather use bare minerals or. st. Tropez – it works just as good and I don’t have to wait 5 months for it. Good luck if you decide to order it! Hope your experience is better then mine and about a thousand others!
Thank you for your comment:) I actually agree with you that sun labs is not a very well ran company and I don’t recommend dealing with them directly. I had trouble with them the first time I ordered this tan. Luckily I have since always ordered the product through amazon and have never had a problem since. The reviews on the link above reflects that other consumers had a good experience as well. It is also available at Ulta. No idea why they are so clueless at the Labratory:)
You are right – you are a great salesperson. I just bought the Sun Labs via the link on your site. Thanks for the great info!
Haha it’s funny though, because when I am supposed to sell something (like when I worked at Victoria’s Secret) I am completely pitiful at it! I hope you love it as much as I do!
I’m new to this whole thing… with a high risk of melanoma in my family there’s no way I’m going tanning or risking getting badly burnt with my fair irish skin. I noticed in your picture that you were using your bare hands to apply the lotion… doesn’t that make your palms orange? how do you avoid that? Thanks!
It does make them a dark gross brown! But luckily I found out that if I wash them with baking soday they are as good as new! Thanks!
I always hated ending up with dark palms and found a tip that works for me! I use cheap first aid disposable plastic gloves for while I do my body and face and then take them off and use a cotton ball to apply tanner to my hands. St Tropez foam is my go-to but I will be trying sun labs! I always love your tutorials! The one on highlighting and contouring helped me finally understand how to do it right!! I’ve shared it with several friends because they noticed how my face was glowy and looked thinner! Thanks for sharing!!
LOVE your blog. You are my guru!!
what happens after a few days when it starts getting blotchy? do you have to wait for it to 100% wear off? just reapply right over the blotches? help! this is ALWAYS my problem.. what to do after a few days?!
Emily! OK first thing first, what product are you using? and are you exfoliating before you apply? I ask because mine doesn’t get blotchy after a few days but I have used other products that definitely have done that…so it might be a product problem. If it is the sun labs let me know and we will figure it out! Thanks girl!
Thank you so much for replying!!! It happens with no matter what I use. I have tried all sorts of lotions, sprays, tan towels… everything. It happens even if I get a professional spray tan! Clearly it is me that is the problem. I look like I have some sort of skin disorder after a few days. Help
HELP HELP HELP! :):):)
Hi there, I am so glad you posted this question! I do the same thing and I have used very expensive products – professional spray tans – down to cheapest products and I become very blotchy. And in the weirdest of places. Mainly behind my knees! But yes I too, look as tho I have a skin disease. Every time. It’s awful! HELP HELP
Have you ever tried the Sun Lab Strictly Faces and is it better to use a ‘face’ sunless tanner than using the regular tanner on your face?
I have tried it but I honestly didn’t notice a difference so I stopped buying two products and just stuck with the one:)
Where can you buy st tropaz and also the Sun brand that you have listed above?
St. Tropez = Sephora and Sun Labs = Ulta. Also I have links above from amazon that are less expensive:)
Cara, you are gorgeous. I’ve been following your blog for a while so I know who you are, but I saw the picture from this post on pinterest and I seriously thought it was a model or ad for something! Loooove your blog, you always have great stuff!
just curious if you have any tips for super, super pale people like me. Like, so pale that the jergen’s lotion–in the light formula– sometimes leaves streaks when I apply it… I’m a redhead and tan would look freaky on me, but I hate looking like a ghost so I want to add a little color, but I seriously get splotchy results even with something as subtle as Jergens! I try lotioning first, which helps with the streaks, but then barely any color actually deposits. I still have about 2/3 of my Jergens and I really don’t want to toss it!
Have you tried mixing your jergens with half and half with regular lotion and then applying them at the same time? This might help by still minimizing streaks and blotches but instead of blocking the color it’s diluting it…
1st, I absolutely love your blog! You are a beautiful woman with a beautiful attitude towards beauty. I love your post on HAC. I’m addicted!
I just wanted to use myself as an example of what not to do on self tanning lotions. I followed your steps or suggestions on how to get the perfect tan. Except I used a cheap $6 self tanner. Not a good idea. It didn’t absorb into my skin and rolled around in splotches. Needless to say I had to exfoliate my entire body lol. I did redo the process however with Jergens! It turned out perfect. Thank you for the pointers.
I look forward to your new posts. BTW love the blonde!
Thank you so much, Jessica! I feel like with the wrong product it really doesn’t matter how well you apply it! That’s what bums me out is so many people tried it once with a bad product and now they fry their skin cause they think that self tanners are all bad! I’m glad the Jergens worked!
Girl you should get commission from Amazon! I have ordered so much from them lately based on your posts! Anyway I just placed an order for the Sun Labs and can’t wait to try it. I’m the white, can’t-get-a-tan-if-my-life-depended-on-it girl in the family so my tanning woes over the years are many! I discovered the Versa Spa spray tan last year at my local tanning salon and its great but too expensive to maintain and each time I go its too tempting to just hop in the tanning bed :/ and I’ve had pre-cancerous skin lesions removed in past so I know that’s not the way to go. Thanks again for another (I’m sure it will be) great tip on getting your beauty on!!! You rock!
Have you tried mixing it with a bit of your facial moisturizer to dilute it a bit?
I do alot of the same things you mentioned, except I mix my tanner equally with my favorite lotion (Jergens Ultra Healing) since I am pretty fair I get a smoother and more natural looking tan. I use a baby wipe to clean the palms of my hands and between my fingers. I have more control over what gets removed and where.
Oh and I mix Jergens Natural Glow in dark with lotion.
Perfect timing! I’m a pale skinned-midwestern girl getting ready to head south for some beach time. I have been using self-tanner for a long time and every year I dread it because it’s so super stinky even my hubby complains about it. Thank you for giving me non-stinky options! I had not even considered trying Jergens again because I tried it when it first came out and it reeked. I’m so excited that I don’t have to stink every time I want a tan anymore!
I recently threw away my sunless tanners because I was so sick of the unnatural color and the stink they left on me! I have tried again and again with Jergens and I just can’t deal with the smell or color. I also used the sunless tanner from Victoria’s Secret. It worked well and the smell wasn’t as bad but it seems like no matter what brand I use I give up because of some key trouble spots: hands, feet, ankles. Do you have any tips for applying to those areas? I read above that you use lotion before you apply the sunless tanner and I have done that but it didn’t help. Please help me!
I am so grateful for this, have been following your blog for awhile now and everything you do or tip about is great! And you are so damn beautiful. Keep up the good work!
Greetings from Kajsa in Sweden!
Thx for your tips! I love your blog I feel like you’re my personal product tester and I always look forward to your recommendations. Keep them coming!
Great tips & tricks … How long do you wait after applying the tanner before you get dressed?? I read some different tutorials and they made it sound like you should stay naked as long as possible … like hrs … I just don’t have time for that .. :/
no way! I only stay naked for about 15 minutes, just until it’s not tacky to the touch….as much as I love hanging out in my birthday suit and not touching things:)
I have found that the best exfoliater is baking soda. I use it in the shower, and it works better than a lufa.
Love your tips and all the funnies! Your presentation of the info is great…easy to read and understand! Please let us know if you find a product that does not use DHA. My search has revealed none. Some research has shown DHA can be a health risk, especially if enhaled. Ensure your followers who use a spray tanner, wear protection for their eye, mouth and nose and are in a well ventilated area. Thanks again for sharing your tips!
Seriously awesome!!! Thank you for all your tips!
I always tell people I’m just Albino because I’m extremely pale and I also have dark brown hair and freckles which makes my skin look even more pale! I can’t wait to try some of these tips to get a little color that actually might look normal and not like I’m an experiment gone wrong!!! Thanks so much!!!
This is probably a weird question, but I have to shave my legs pretty much every other day. Will the tan come off leaving streaks? Love the review! Thanks, Cara!!
EEP! This is so exciting to read. I just lost 65 pounds, so showing my legs in public was never something I’d dreamed of doing until now. Except now I have to deal with my pretty much translucent skin. Thank you SO MUCH for the tips and thanks to your readers for their comments! It’s nice to know I’m not the only milk-skinned lady who just wants a tan without cancer!
Congrats on the weight loss!! A few months ago I’d lost 30lbs and have gained about 12 back. I’ve been meaning to get back to WW. I think the tanning is another good incentive! I always just sported my paleness like a badge of cancer-free courage but I’m glad they’ve come a long way from the sunless tanners of the 80′s!! Back to Amazon!!
Hi, Cara. I love the blonde highlights in your hair! My teenage daughter and I are going to try the sunless tanning this weekend using the Sun Labs so we don’t look so ghostly for spring break. For emergencies, I use L’Oreal Sublime Bronze One Day Tinted Gel, which is a non-tanner that washes off in the shower. I mix the gel with my body lotion before applying, since I’m a blue-eyed blonde with super white skin. My daughter is olive-skinned, thanks to my husband, so she uses the gel without lotion. The product looks natural on both of us. Just make sure to wear latex gloves when applying, because this product will leave your hands orange.
I am also wondering about what you should do when your tan starts to get splotchy. Also, is there a way to make a sunless tan last when you get in the pool a lot? I quit doing sunless tanners because of getting in the pool but I am so tired of being pale!!!
Hi Cara, just wondering if you have tried Sienna X but you may not have it where you are?
Do you usually apply the tanner to the underside of your arms as well? Naturally that area is whiter than the tops of your arms, but with a self tanner it’s a little more complicated! And also my hands seem to be a difficult area…..I don’t want to have white hands but also don’t want dark palms. Helppp!
I use the tanner under my arms. If im building my tan then ill use it once then wait a day or 2 before I do it again. But I also tan everything, if you know what I mean.
This is my favorite self tanner but I always have to mix it with a luminous lotion because it is difficult to blend.
I’m interested in trying these. One of my favorites has been tan towels from ULTA. My sister and law showed them to me and I always use them when I need a quick tan! And I never look orange Thanks for your tips!
Agreed! Tan Towels are awesome. No streaks and only $5 each (or $3 for a half body size).
Does your sunless tan typically fade pretty evenly? I usually do the Versa Spa at my local tanning bed, which looks great for the first couple days (smells horrible though!), but it fades very blotchy. It kind of starts looking like I have some weird skin disease, and when I try to touch up with at home stuff or get a reapplication it just makes the blotchy spots even darker.
I haven’t tried that, that’s a great idea! (one of those why-didn’t-i-think-of-that moments!) Thanks!
I just placed my order for the sun lab products you suggested! I can’t wait to use them. I hope I can get mine to look like yours! Thanks for sharing!!
I know you apply in the evening after showering, but do you shower again in the morning to rinse it off? Or just go about your day normally?
These are great! Tanning beds are super dangerous, so I love these tips. I have to say, your blog is one of the best I’ve ever stumbled upon!! Keep up the incredible work and keep all us followers looking great thank you Cara!
Hi Cara! I am new to your blog and I just love it!!! I am painfully pale and have had HORRIBLE experiences with self tanner so I am really excited to try Sun Labs. My question is that the link sends you to an Amazon order for Overnight Tanner. Is this different than the Ultra Dark Instant Tint pictured above? Thanks for all of the great info!
Would you recommend this to someone who works out everyday?
I workout everyday and use the Sun Labs. I do my tanning at night after my shower, then workout the next day later in the afternoon with no problem. I did get just a tiny bit of Light brown on a sports bra from sweating but I didn’t notice any streaking or running on my skin or anywhere else on my clothing. Just thought Id let you know my experience.
I was wondering the same thing….but I work out pretty early in the morning so I don’t have as much “time” to let the tan set. And I don’t really want to get my sports bras tan!
I have been an avid mystic tanner for probably 5 years now but so scared that it is going to end up being bad for my health. Do you mystic tan or just use sunless tanner? Your tan looks amazing!!! I have tried spaying sunless tanner on a makeup brush and use that on my face and that seems to work. Do you spray the tanner directly on your face and then rub it in? Like you I want my face tan…I look like I have the flu without a tan! Great info and I will definatly try the products you recommended!
Thanks for the tips! I’m pasty white and have a hard time avoiding the umpa-lumpa look when I use self tanners! I hate the gross smell the most. So does my husband!
Do you do the CSI shower every time you need to reapply? Or just the initial application?
Thanks!
Hannah
Great post! Sunless tanners overwhelmed me so I just chose to stay white, but you are absolutely right about everything just feeling more “put together” with a little color on your skin!
My question is, what do your hands look like after all this? The Sun Lab lotion appeals the most to me (instant gratification haha) but I’m worried I’ll come out with darker palms than the rest of my body. Advice?
I just bought Jergens glow cream tanner last night and sorry to say that it smells awful. So so so awful. It didn’t get fixed in the least.
Hey Cara, I am in desperate need to get tan, but want to keep it healthy! I love your tips and tricks. I also came across this deal on Living Social and was wondering if you had any comments on it. http://www.livingsocial.com/cities/170/deals/582094-at-home-airbrush-tanning-system?afsrc=1&utm_campaign=MorningSend&utm_content=170&utm_medium=email&utm_source=blast
Have you used one before?
What are your thoughts.
Thank you so much!
YOU are a life savor. Or, rather, life color-er. I’m a very pasty, former oompa loompa. I’ve only every used tanner on my legs because, well, that was the only place I could reach without having a super noticeable stopping point. And now? I KNOW HOW TO TAN MY BACK!! So very excited. Thank you.
Hi Cara!
Ok, I’m ready for the leap into tan-ness! One question: if I’m going to go and do the SunLabs application every 3-4 days and moisturize every day, do I get the Jergen’s natural glow moisturizer in fair/med or med/tan? It’ll be going over the Sun labs application just to give it a *boost*.(special note: I’m in Alaska and have obtained a whiteness only documented by scientists!)
I noticed blotches on the underside of your arm in the last picture, near your elbow area…is it hard to blend self tanners or were you just in a hurry? Just curious…would like to try self tanner but I don’t think I have the patience to blend it perfectly!
Hey Cara, have you found that if you put it on in the morning after your shower… it stains your clothing? I’m in my sister’s wedding in a couple of weeks… and heaven knows I need some color!!! Haha
Wonderful ! I owned a tanning bed and used it maybe a total of 20 times. The damage is still VERY obvious on my cheeks, from laying my face on it, It has been over 15 years now, and I try to stay free from sun damage by faithfully using sunscreen. I am in my fifty’s, however, I would probably look 20 years younger, had I never bought the tanning bed.
I use Tomas on my entire body. My husband sprays it on and it’s gorgeous! But I have to stand in the shower because its messy! I use a makeup sponge to apply it to my face! I actually get about 5 whole body tans out of it. But I am going to try sun labs! Thanks for this!
How would you recommend choosing which color to use (medium/dark/extra dark)?
Great tips Cara!! For any Canadian ladies out there who don’t want to order online I’ve always got great results and lots of compliments using the Marcelle tanner – they sell combo-packs around this time of year with a tube of the face one and a bigger tube of the body one. I actually have had coworkers say to me ‘wow you got some sun this weekend!’ Haha I have sensitive acne prone skin and I have had no issues. It may smell… I’ve honestly never had a problem with the smell of a sunless tanner though lol.
Love the look of your tan! You seem to be the only one to have achieved what I wish I could have by now with self-tanners. I can never seem to achieve that “Jen Aniston” tan. I always turn out having that orange-ish glow to me. I’m not sure if that has to do with my skin’s natural undertone (I’ve been told I’m more yellow than pink, and definitely don’t have any olive tone to my tans) but I am also super super white so I’ll soak up whatever the tanner’s tone is too. Right now I’m using L’Oreal Sublime Bronze in the spray gel, and I like it more than past self-tanners I’ve used, but I still feel a little orangey if I use it too close to the last tan session, and it’s also gradual, so I don’t get the instant gratification of a bronzer. My question though, is do you use all three of these products on top of each other to get your color? Or do you alternate using each one due to their convenience?
Hey cara! I’m from st George too! I love sunless tanners because my skin burns then peels, then gets pasty again.. Growing up in the desert sure hasn’t done my skin favors… Just curious if you ever tried Xentan? Because I picked some up at Nordstom a couple years ago after the ladies on good things utah raved about it, nd I hav nve looked back. Olive to deep tan, and yummy smells… Yummy!
Kara, have you ever tried St Tropez? I dance and usually just go into the tanning bed, but maybe fake baking will keep me healthier, and I heard that’s a GREAT brand.
I have a tan all the time but I want to be darker for summer should I buy Sun labs medium or dark for me?
Do any of the products you mention work for people with tattoos? What I mean, is will they mess up color tattoos?
Hi Erin, I use the sunless products from Victoria’s Secret and I have a full sleeve. The products have not messed up my color at all. The actual sun or tanning beds will fade your tatt colors though, so always use sunscreen while in the sun

About to take my “CSI Shower”!!! Thanks for this tutorial, this pale Irish/English heritage American Girl is desperate for some non-oompaloompa color! I’ll check back in tomorrow and let you know how it went!
I did it yesterday and I love it!!! Fantastic color. A little light, but then I applied light because I didn’t want to turn orange. THANKS!
Went to the sun lab site link ypu included. Nothing there shows the sun labs Medium as you suggested. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Thank u for he blog I absolutely hate the smell of tanners so I avoid them but really need a good one. So from all I read Sun has to b ordered not in a dept store?? I am excited to try
I am pregnan, and worry about most self tanners, and if they are safe. Help!
I’m in the same boat. I felt like I should wait until the first trimester was over, but now I am still a little hesitant. It sucks gaining weight AND being pale
do you have to buy sunlabs online? or do drugstores/department stores sell it?
Cara commented above: “St. Tropez = Sephora and Sun Labs = Ulta. Also I have links above from amazon that are less expensive:)”
Hello! Just found your blog and love it!!!
Had a question about tanning….. have you ever tried tanning with a strongly brewed tea? I want to try it and wondered if you had.
Thanks,
Janelle
I love your blog! I’ve checked out some other ones (from Pinterest posts) and yours is by far the best. I love that you talk during your tutorial instead of adding voice to a video where the girl just makes faces at you, you list your products (and alternatives), AND not ALL (and I mean ALL!!) of the brushes and makeup you use are from MAC! I brought the NYX concealer in yellow just recently and use it mostly as a cheek highlighter and get compliments all the time… So thank you for the wonderful recommendation (and I love that it’s cheap)!
I used to work in a tanning salon, so I’ve done more than my fair share of tanning and it shows in the winkles in my face! I definitely want to go sunless but like you, I HATE HATE HATE the smell of self tanner. And I always feel kind of greasy/slimy after applying it… Making me not want to wear anything besides sweats and a loose t-shirt. So, my question for you is: When do you apply self tanner, during the day or at night?
Thanks!
P.S. I signed up to receive emails to notify me when you have a new post, but I’m not getting any emails…?
Do u apply all of these at one time I understand the spray is for the face but the other two do u just mix them together or what?
I just found your post on Pinterest! I am wondering what happens to the tan when you shower before the 4-5 days is up and it’s time to reapply? I am white and have always wanted to start a sunless tanning regimen. I have the Jergens lotion and I’m wondering is it going to wash off or fade when I shower, will soap ruin the tan? That’s my main issue keeping me from becoming an intense sunless tanner. I’ve used the Jergens lotion before but I can’t remember what happened when I showered. And also after 4-5 days we should repeat the steps of shaving and exfoliating and so on… right?
Thanks!
Thanks for your insight as an ex tanning addict. I have been using kake tans since i was 10…started with good old faithful Q-T…and i have to say my all time current favorite is Loreal Sublime Spray Tan…not sure what I would do if they discontinued this product…If u haen’t tried pls do great price great product and no smell!!
These are such great tips! I love to be tan in the summer (naturally a fair skinned Norwegian!:)), but I don’t like thinking about the damage I’m doing to my skin by spending so much time outside, especially since I live in Georgia where the sun is INTENSE.
I have thought about doing spray tans so that the application is a little easier. What are your thoughts on spray tans (besides the price–that’s a given!)? Do they last at all longer than using self tanner at home? Are they more likely to rub off or come off in the pool? Any advice you or anyone else on here could provide would be super helpful! Thanks!!
Hi. I loved your post. Loads of fab info bits. I also agree that we look a little better/healthier with a subtle little glow and I wouldn’t go greet my public without a little sunless tan on all my visible bits! I haven’t come across the self tan products you mention. Possibly they aren’t available here in Ireland.
I use Vita Liberata Silken Chocolate (even sound luxurious and yummy) Tinted Self Tan Gel in Medium. Its wonderful and smells heavenly. Like a sweet vanilla lotion. I am DEFO going to try the baking soda for the hands. Isn’t it a Godsend. I used it in the kitchen and also have a tub in the bathroom. I use it for facial and elbow scrubs and for extra clean teeth couple of times a week.
Thank you for the detailed tutorial. Awesome job! I appreciate the recommendations for products.
I started my “tan” over the weekend because your post reminded me how much I adore sunless tanning! I hadn’t thought about using the Jergens as a moisturizer/tan booster so I gave it a shot. It doesn’t smell as bad as it used to (yay!) but I am not sure if I am just overly picky or if my eyes are playing tricks on me, but I think it is giving me an orangey tint on my feet and on my thighs….maybe I laid it on too thick? I am not really sure. Anyone else have this issue??? Florida in two days so I might just skip the Jergens and stick with my St Tropez (haven’t had a chance to buy SunLabs yet)…
Have you ever tried million dollar tan? Not sure what one is better.
I agree, I love the way I look much better with a tan! I love self tanning with the right products, it’s fabulous. BUT, my problem is how it just washes right off in the pool/hot tub. First of all, because there goes all of my hard work! And second, because I go in the pool looking fabulously tan and come out looking white again. I mean really, there isn’t anything we can do about that right?? Do you have this problem? (You look more naturally tan than I am, so probably not.)
So…although your post is making me want to bust out my self tanner again, I am trying to just embrace my paleness nowdays!!
xoxo – Megs
You’re the bomb, Cara. That’s all I have to say! Great blog!
How often do you shave/wax your legs? Do you re-apply the tan afterwards? I have to shave every couple days and my tan fades so much faster (understandable since shaving also takes dead skin with it) but I get tired of the tan upkeep! Any tips on that? I also have a hard time blending into my ankles and feet, so any tips on that would be great too! thanks!
So happy to have found your post! I saw Jergens had changed their packaging and was wondering what they had changed.
Absolutely LOVED this and am purchasing today! Thank you for being so relatable and honest. It’s like you’re reading my mind every time you post something…
Nice blog… Thanks!
I never have a problem tanning, it is keeping it looking nice. How often do you exfoliate after you have tanned? Every time you put new product on?? I see you load up with lotion in between but does it buil- up after awhile??
Thanks for the help,,
where does the spray come in during the process?
Okay, clueless here…I have used lots of sunless tanner’s before, but never a spray. I picked up the toma’s spray today and am terrified of spraying it directly into my face! Especially since the directions say to use a sponge to apply to face, how to you apply it to your face, any tips?

Ok, So I had to post because I have been trying to find Sun Labs at somewhere other than amazon (because they ran out of stock and then bumped the price up 10 bucks when they got ONE in) and the sun labs site and I cannot find it.
I’ve looked on Ulta, Sephora, Target, Walmart, CVS, and Sally Beauty…I’m starting to run out.
If you know of anywhere else to buy it I’d love to know! I’m desperate!
Thanks
I was wondering what type of Sun Labs to get. Do I get the ultra dark? Or the medium? Thanks for all the great tips!
I have the same question!!! I’m pale in the winter – but I tan really easy in the summer months. Blonde hair/blue eyes. I see you use the medium – but had a gal pal say to get the ultra dark. Don’t know which to order!! :/
Do you use all the products separately or do you use all of them together?!?!?!?!
I’m getting lotion tomorrow. I will look for sun at Walmart but I’m sure they have jergens. this has really helped me decide, thank you!
Where can you buy sunlabs?!
I found Sun Labs at a Bed Bath and Beyond that has a Health and Beauty Care Department and it was $10.99 for the 8 oz. bottle or $16.99 for the larger bottle (not sure how many ounces). To find a store that has that department, you can go to the Bed Bath and Beyond website, click store locator, type in your zip code, and on the right side check the box with the Health and Beauty Care Department.
Sorry, I made a mistake in my previous reply. It’s $10.99 for the 4 oz. bottle and $16.99 for the 8 oz. bottle.
This is a lot of great info, thank you.
I have a few questions.
How long after you apply the tanner can you put moisturizer on
I have very dry skin, especially on my face.
Also I am very fair, and worried about not being even, I am going to
Vegas in April, would it be better to get a professional spray tan
first then use the self tanner?
Does the self tanner come off on clothes?
Great tips! I think another good one to add…. once you’ve built up your tan and are lotioning up to maintain it, kill two birds with one stone by maintaining the tan/moisture and using up some of the probable multitudes of lotions you have on hand – mix your own tinted moisturizer for the body! I do this all the time by mixing together my regular lotion with a few pumps of my St.Tropez tanning lotion! Makes application really easy too!
I just ordered the Sun Labs lotion! I do have a question though…..will it stain your clothes when you sweat or when it starts to fade? I have some expensive pieces (expensive to me
Cara, how do you handle this when you workout? I don’t know about these products but don’t they come off when you sweat? Please help!
I sell the sun labs products at my work and they really are AWESOME!! I’m not sure if you already tried it yet but they also make the tan overnight medium in a formula made specifically for the face so it won’t clog your pores for sure. It’s called strictly faces. I use it all the time in the spring and summer and absolutely LOVE it! Just thought I’d pass it along
Hi Cara! Love this post! Do you happen to know if these products are safe to use while pregnant?? I know that the coloring might be different due to hormones, but I’m willing to risk it if it’s safe otherwise:)
Okay I read for 15 mins ish and didn’t see this suggested so… Here goes. I have a client that recently turned me on to Fake Bake Flawless Self Tanning Liquid
http://fakebake.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=FBTU&Product_Code=FBTRIO-Flawless-Refill-Gloss&Attributes=Yes&Quantity=1
This is a self tanning liquid with olive undertones that I have had the absolute best luck with. I have to rosacea and milia and this product does not clog my pores or irritate my skin. $24.99 at a “Salon” but the bottle lasts a good long time. (if you have a girl friend with a cosmo license you can have her get it for a better price if you know what i mean… winkkkk)
The color will last about 5 days after application. You can do back to back applications for darker color. There is instant gratification on it showing instant results as well. Cons- smells like self tanner, if your skin gets wet within 4 hours you may spot so I prefer to do before bed. Last, it does come off on my sheets, but I’ve had no problem washing them clean and tan free. ( wear an old t shirt to bed or lay a towel or old sheets down)
Yes, it has cons but I will assure you it is phenom. I work at a hospital and people always ask if I just got back from vacation or where I go to keep up my tan in such a small town.
The box has a whole description on how they use natural products to make it.. So I would def check it out if I was one of the hives victims from above!
If you have any ?s feel free to let me know what you think…
Please keep commentary to constructive criticism vs. bashing :0)

Ermmmm jk this is a more helpful link… Sorry posting at 2:33 a.m. But really wanted to share my secret! Thanks for reading and I hope it helps!
Hi! I’m a first time reader and the advice you have sounds great! I’m very excited to try it out! But I am a swimmer for an actual team so I regularly swim 5 days a week with the sun beating down on my back. So I’m pretty much already tan, but I’ve got some weird tan lines I’d like to fix although I’m afraid then that my regular tan will look even weirder. And to add to the problems, I swim and take a shower every other day, so would that be a problem too with keeping up the even tan? I know this is a very specific situation, so thanks for your time!
Do these products rub off? On clothes, furniture etc.
I just bought the jergens one today then I remembered you saying to shave and exfoliate, I dont shave my arms, would using the lotion make it to where my arm hair gets reall dark also or will it not have a huge effect on it?
Hey Carly!
Great blog! I am searching online right now and was wondering if there is a drastic difference between the ultra dark and medium sun lab? I just want to make sure I am not buying one thats gunna make me look insanely and fakey tanned haha and whenever I search sun labs ultra dark always comes up
Hey Cara,
I am vampire pale (without the sparkles and creamy tone). I don’t really tan in the sun (more of burn) and I’m very cautious about going to a tanning bed because I want to take care of my skin. I have never thought about using tanning lotion because of all the bad rep I have heard from them. But your blog changed my mind.
So, as a first time tanner (in any sense) what brand would you recommend? Since it’ll be my first time using any product other than typical lotion on my skin, I am afraid of going too dark/obvious. Would Jergen’s be a safe starting product?
I’ve tried self tanners a few times, but i always seem to have problems around my ankle/feet area. any tips?
I am trying the face area for the first time tonight…. & I’m completely freakin out! Ha! Never done the face before- so I hope I don’t wake lookin like a freak, that didn’t know what I was doin! Ah! I am also re-trying the Jergens stuff… That smell was horrid!! So here’s to hoping they really did fix it!
Thanks for ALL the tips! I hope to try this after I buy the products. Can’t WAIT!!
sister, YOU ROCK! your tutorial is GOLDEN! i am white and had always been able to tan very well (my family would call me the Coppertone baby because i was practically black and didn’t burn) but then when i was 19 i got vitiligo and it spread over 80% of my body. now i can’t tan in the sun, nor even be in the sun unless i put on sunblock 1000. sunless tanners are nice but you do totally end up smelling and that is the part i hate the most so i had given up about 8 years ago. someone today pinned your tutorial on Pinterest and i am getting ready to buy the Tomas and am so excited! i totally agree that a tan makes you look so much better! i’m getting ready to once again be a bronze goddess, lol! well, it’s a start. thank you very much for giving us the skinny! i have an old tube of jergens under my sink that has been there for a good while. looks like i am gonna have to toss it and get the stink-free kind too! i will be your newest follower!
Thank you again!!
I love Jergens FACE Natural Glow!! – its a daily moisturizer with an spf 20 and it’s oil free! Gives me great color on my face!!…and I haven’t had any problems with breakouts!! LOVE IT!!!
I currently use Jergens natural glow on my arms and legs…but I have found that it does not evenly distribute the color…sometimes I get dark streaks on my shins, but then very little color on the back of my calves. I know I’m putting it on evenly and I exfoliate first…so I’m stumped.: / And if I don’t use it everyday, the color starts to breakdown leaving me with weird speckled dots all over (kinda like freckles). I will have to try to others mentioned on here!
I am new to this but Im really excited to try it. Just a couple of questions. Do I use all 3 together or individually and in what order? Also I am going to be breast feeding do u know if this is harmful to the baby?
Thanks for all your info! One question – If you use the lotion for your body and the spray for your face, how do you make sure it’s blended okay?
Where does the Jergens fit into this ritual? Is it an alternative to the SunLabs?
She says that she uses SunLabs but uses jergens as an added moisturizer to keep up the tan. Apparently it last longer when you skin is constantly moisturized.
The picture you posted of Sun Labs is the ultra dark, do you still recommend the medium?
I received my first bottle of Sun Labs Instant Tint yesterday. I ordered it Amazon and it arrived in five days. I didn’t really have time to try a whole body application, but I couldn’t wait…so I just tried some on my forearm. Smells really good, but the smell does not longer. Easy to see where you have applied it as you’re applying it. Left it on overnight (no stains on my clothes or sheets). It did look dark, but after showering this morning, the color became a perfect golden brown. I asked three co-workers their opinion on the color and they really liked it…no orange here. From my very limited experience with the product, it appears a little goes a long way and is as good as the other posters have said it is. Can’t wait to do it up properly! I did buy the 32oz bottle of the ultra dark, which I think I will use as a base, and buy a bottle of the medium for normal use… or, just see which one I like best.
Longer = linger
Hi! Loved the blog! So many great tips. I’ve had some weird experiences with self-tanner.
So, I’m white. Porcelain skin, redhead white. I don’t tan AT ALL. I don’t want to be very dark, because that wouldn’t look natural at all (not that any tan really would on me–not many natural redheads can tan). I just want to not totally blind people when I go out in shorts and skirts this Spring and Summer. Which self-tanner/shade would you recommend that I try for a light, “golden” glow? Thanks so much!

I just found you’re blog on Pinterest and I love it! I had a quick question though, when did Jergen’s change their lotion smell? I’ve bought it the past two summers and hate the smell so much. Is there a new bottle I should look for?
How long does a bottle of SunLab usually last you? What size bottle do you usually buy?
I’m surprised most people don’t talk about Famous Dave’s Moisture Tan- I’ve been using it for years and my all time favorite! I’m a redhead with pale freckly skin and Dave’s is by far the most natural I’ve ever had and the least scented and lasts for weeks without rubbing color off! And I’ve tried a number of tanners over the last 15 years of attempting a natural looking tan for redheads.

I didn’t get to read through all the comments but has anyone tried the infinity sun system? It’s a botanical based dha product that leaves the skin a glowing hydratred treatment!!! No need to worry about looking like the New Jersey Shore cast, but it will make you feel like you’ve been to the beach for a while and without the sunburn!!!

How do you use the Toma’s on your face?
Hi cara.
Just a quick question….I am an everyday showerer from waaaayy back. Does the color come off? Which product would you recommend that could make it through WWIII?
By the way, love the blog!

It’s been a really long time since I used a self tanner, but when I did, it came off onto my clothes, sheets, etc if I got the least bit hot and sweated. Maybe it was cheap tanner or I wasn’t doing something right… Is that still an issue? Because that’s the only reason I haven’t really gone back to it after all this time.
Cara – thanks for the post!
Quick question, do you have any recommendations for sensitive skin? In the past when I’ve applied sunless tanner, I sometimes get a weird almost allergic reaction on my legs only – bumps and it’s itchy. I’m hoping it was just a product I used and that not all hope is lost for me! Do the products you listed hold up for sensitive skin?
How do you use the spray on your face??
What cleansers do you use with your Clarisonic?
I get those too! I thought I was just a complete failure at self-tanner application. I mean, I still could be if you go by the splotches on my ankles.
Fake Bake has been my savior this prom season! It is amazing and never orange! Apply after shower at night and once more in the morning to build up a really natural tan. Also great for blending streaks from a spray tan.
Hi Cara, I’m a huge fan of your blog. I have literally tried every tanning product known to mankind. You HAVE to try the Victoria’s secret tanning lotion. It is south easier to apply than Sun Labs and St Tropez. Plus it smells good! I used to use St Tripez pretty regularly but it can look a little ashy/grey. The Victoria’s secret lotion glides on super easily and it is so much cheaper than Sun Labs. It gives a great golden sunkissed tan without looking orange at all. I just thought I would share it with you cuz I know you will love it!
I’m sorry but that SUN tanning product is the worst stuff. Its terrible. I went off a review from another user and was so excited to try the stuff. BUT was so embarrassed after I put it on. I am no dumby when it comes to tanning products as I use Lancome and LOVE the stuff! Its pricey but at least you don’t look like you have rolled in a bag of Doritos after using it. If you girls want a super good tanner them I recommend Lancome Flash Bronzer Tinted Self-Tanning Leg Gel with Pure Vitamin E. I have tried MANY other products and this stuff is wonderful. You can use it over your entire body not just your legs
Just go read the 5 star reviews Wonderful stuff!!

Love this post! I stopped going to the tanning bed 3 years ago and much prefer self tanning in my bathroom Have you heard of Rodan and Fields? I love the sunless tanner! https://jlawhorn.myrandf.com/Shop/Product/ESST125
Hey Cara, love your website! I used bareminerals faux tan and love it, seeing your comments on sunlab I imagine that it’s pretty comparable. I apologize if someone already asked this question b/c I did not read ALL of the posts, but if your going to try to maintain a consistent summer tan with fake tanner, when do you exfoliate again? for example, if I do my CSI shower and exfoliate before my first application, do I exfoliate again before my 4/5 day application?
Thank you!
Just found your blog last week and love it! I’ve also just placed my order for my overnight tanning lotion from Amazon. Being an Avon rep, I’ll use the Skin So Soft Satin Glow for my moisturizer everyday. Thanks for sharing with us!
I love this! You did an awesome job breaking everything down. I just recently bought tanner at Wal-Mart and got home and thought to myself “now what”? Thanks for the tips!
This may sound silly, but do you use just one of those 3 tanners? Or do you use a mix of all of them while you tan? Thanks so much! I am so looking forward to doing this!

I have always been the palest of my family, and I used to try out all sorts of sunless tanners (more so years ago) and then I finally accepted my paleness after tireless accounts of the self-tanner rubbing off later and too many hours spent frying my skin in the sun. I don’t want to go to tanning beds or soak up too many sun rays, and I prefer to keep a healthy relationship with my SPF and the sun. Yet, I hate sunless tanners because they always have rubbed off on my sheets after applying hours before bed… or worse, when it stains my gym clothes! I love a good daily sweat in my routine, and I practice hot yoga regularly, but I’m adverse to trying any sunless tanner again in fear of ruining some of my favorite yoga clothes (that lululemon is expensive too!) Not only does it rub off onto my clothes, but then I feel like me skin is streaky from my sweat!
Is there no hope for a sweaty workout after self-tanning? Any recommendations??
I still would like to have the best of both worlds, as I normally may use a fake tan before a big occasion — when I also love a good work out too! If you can’t tone it, tan it! But I like to try BOTH! HELP!
Hi! Loved the post. I am an avid runner and I tend to have my sports bras rub off a lot of the fake tanners very quickly. Any suggestions on how to remedy this??
what product are you using for the picture labeled “start in the center, work your way out”?
I bought the sun labs and the Tomas spray you listed, this is my first time using self tanner. I read that you use the Tomas spray in your face, how do you apply it? The can says to use a sponge and I tried that and it was sooooo streaky, and the next morning it all almost rubbed off on my pillow any tips on how to make it look less blotchy on my face? And I did give my face a nice scrub before hand
You should really try Rodan+Fields sunless tanner. It smells fresh and clean and comes out as a foam for easier spreading. Easy to use on the face without weird oiliness. Website to buy: sudurbin.myrandf.com
You look so good with light hair!
Does the sun labs stay on swimming in pools/ocean? I have had a problem with self tanner coming off after swimming.
Sorry if this is a silly question but do you use all three?
Which products do you use for which things?
Or do you just use one?
Thanks!
I’m extremely pale and I have tried a few tanners and Jergens is by far the best on a budget. It does stop getting dark, so eventually you’ll need to graduate to something else, but Jergens is great for beginners because it’s so gradual that it doesn’t streak. You can’t mess up too badly by starting off light.
I’m really eager to try the Sun labs product after this review. I have tried others like St Tropez but it leaves a dusty residue on my skin despite the great color it gives me. I also like the Jergens for its gradual building of a tan. I also figured I’d see if you had tried Tan Towels (orange little packets)? They are a tan towelette and I was skeptical at first after using the Loreal ones which left me streaky but the Tan Towels really work and apply evenly. Try them if you haven’t. I like to have them in my purse or travel bag for a quick touch up when I’m looking a bit pale!
I apologize if this subject has already been covered, I was unable to find it. I just recently started noticing “sun spots” mainly on my legs due to years of sun damage I suppose. When I use a self tanner, it enhances these spots and they look horrible. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, have you found a tanner that does not appear this way? Thanks for any suggestions,
I ordered my Sun Labs from Amazon a week ago and I still don’t have it. I got an email that said it shipped yesterday. Has anyone else had to wait a week for your product to ship? Not too happy with them right now…I certainly hope this stuff is as good as you all say!
Do these tanners seem to rub off on your clothes? If so, does it permanently stain or it just comes off in the wash?
Also, when applying the spray to your face do you literally spray it on there or do you apply it with a sponge?
I had it rub off on a white shirt, but I used Shout Extreme Clean to get it out. As long as you don’t let it set in too long, it should work.
I’ve been using this regime (all except the spray) for a couple of weeks…my one complaint is my feet and hands…I am going to try what you recommended about the hands-but what about the feet?!?!?
Do you do your armpits? top of feet?
I live in Alaska AND I’m Irish/German/French. So needless to say I’m super white! I call it porcelain white, it feels fancy buy since summer is coming I like a little color, and my problem was it not going on evenly, tanner was always splotchy on me. But your “CSI shower” tip helped emensly! I’m just using Jergens for fair skin right now to build a base then I’ll add some of the others you suggested. Thanks so much!
I used to do the Versaspa every week, hated it..this is a complete life saver! I can put it only where I show my skin, & the bottle lasts forever! Money & time saver. Thanks!
Has anyone tried the Tan Towels? I’ve got an event coming up so I don’t really have the time to wait for the Sun Labs to come through the mail, unfortunately. I just wanted to see if anyone has any input on the Tan Towels though… I believe you only get 10 towelettes for $20 but I’m not sure how long they last. Thanks
I’ve never used the towels. BUT I did order Sun Labs from http://www.paylessbeauty.com/index.php?file=productlist&search_type=keyword&category=All+Site&keyword=sun+lab
It only took 1 day. I live in CA. So if you live in CA it will only take one day..
I’m in NY so it would probably take a lot longer for me. Plus, they don’t have Medium in stock right now. I’m not pasty white but I am on the fair side so I’d be afraid to go with the dark. Thanks for replying though.

Sorry I didn’t mean to reply here to my other post here
Thanks for the great tips! I’m pretty pastey (not much sun in Iowa in April for a freckly pale person lol) and I like to use self tanners. I’m still trying to find the perfect products, so I’ll give the ones you said a try! I do have a question though… If some ends up staying on your hands, even though I wash my hands right after every application… is there a way to remove the color from your palms? Thanks!
Do you have a particular(trusted) Amazon seller than you buy from? I ordered from an Amazon seller and just received two 4 oz bottles and one had the normal, dark brown lotion and the other had an olive green color! Hopefully they accept a return :/
Green product is from oxidization… Most likely it was old.
I have read a lot of these posts, but haven’t seen anything about hands, other than washing off product with baking soda. My issue, is I have to wash my hands a lot during the day and after a while my hands are back to being white again. Is the only thing I can do, to have a small tube of my sunless product with me at all times to reapply?
Just got here from Pinterest and HAD to comment. I LOOOOVE Sun Labs self tanner! I’ve been using it for about 3 – 4 years now. I’m irish and white as a ghost and I swear by this stuff! My only tip to add on is to apply is using a sunless tanner glove (like a big mitt made with a velvety material) I get it from Ulta right in the sunless tanning section…works wonders. I have never been orange or streaky from this stuff ever!
Oh gosh! This post was perfect for me! I have been a Loreal Sublime user for years. Until this month! I bought the same bottle I always do but noticed “new” on the label. Hmmm, I thought. Oh goodness it’s awful. It works the same but smells like I spent the night making out with a 75 year old man. I kid you not, all I can smell all day is Old Spice. I’ve looked everywhere and they’ve all changed to this. Ugh! Who wants an over masking cologne smell? Yuck. I’m going to try the ones you suggested. Loreal- go back to no smell please!
It’s time isn’t it ??? I love the Jergens it works awesome for me
Thanks so much for the wonderful tips, but just had one question. Since I like to shave my legs every other day, becuase I look like a gorilla if I dont, what would your recommend for my legs that wont come off when I shave or get streaky because of it? Or should I just suck it up and wait as long as I can before shaving?
Hi there, this is so great!! I am learning a lot! I bought the sun labs and really loved it. I’m really nervous to do my face and neck. I just saw tips for your face, but none for your neck….and the tomas spray i got but i sprayed it on and it was all dotty on my chest and i wiped it off right away. Help Cara
Hi there, I’m trying to stay away from harsh products that contain parabens in them. Do you know of any self tanners that are more organic in nature?
My selfless tanner always clumps up on my shins and I don’t know what to do :”(
Hi! I got here from pinterest and i just went and bought some sun labs! I was so excited to try it but it made me look pink :/ It also seemed like it brought out every little flaw in my skin and looked horrible! Is there something i’m doing wrong? I would love to look tan again but with a little one it’s hard to just be able to lay out!
Quick question: Should I remove the old sunless tan before re-applying the tanner? And will exfoliating get rid of enough of the old tan even if it is not COMPLETELY gone??
Do you use the overnight sunlabs or the instant tint? I think your description and the image used are different? The sunlabs website isn’t very helpful in their descriptions
All I want to say is like O.M.G like oh my gosh, this is like totally so cool like OMG for realzzz, Girl Power!
where did you get your hair done and by who?
I’ve always used the jergens natural glow with lotion mixed in at the same time. I pump the tanner and regular lotion into one hand, rub together, and lotion my body as usual. It seems to more evenly distribute the tanner. And I would reach as much as I could on my back and then take a towel and do the “back drying motion”, like I’m drying my body after a shower. I wash my hands afterwards and just rub them on any oily feeling spots to smooth in the lotion on my body and get a bit more on my hands to make them match my body tan. Hope this helps!
You should add Fake Bake to this list It’s a really great self-tanner. I’m about as white as paper year-round, but I just recently discovered the magic in this bottle. It’s a pretty good deal, too. Depending on which Fake Bake package you buy, it always comes with a mitt- like an oven mitt, but specifically for tanning. You spray the liquid onto the mitt and rub in a circular motion. It’s really effective, more so than using your hands, AND you don’t end up with orangey-brownish hands. Plus, it’s a tropical scent, so it smells pretty great. I highly recommend this product.

Love sun labs! Took your advice and bought it! Wondering about trying to build the tan…Do you need to exfoliate 2 days later or just put it on?
Bought the Sun Labs and just tried it for the first time. So far, loving it! I tried using tanning lotion a couple of times in high school but it always smelled terrible and looked orangey–so far this has been a much better experience! One thing I wanted to point out: when I put the lotion on my face, I dotted it around my face like in your picture and by the time I got around to rubbing the dots in I had little dirty looking spots on my face from where the tanner had been sitting in one spot. I washed my face with an exfoliating scrub and it came right off, but thought I’d point it out in case others have this problem too!
