I used to be a blonde.
My whole life actually.
Until about seven years ago. Every year since, when springtime comes around, I have the urge to go back.
It’s usually cured by a few Kardashian episodes or a desperate phone call to Rachel (my sis) where she reminds me of the damage and the awkward stages and the promises I made when she dyed it back black after a brief blonde stint that first year, that I was not going to flip-flop or I’d end up bald…as hairdressers say:
“Once you go black, we don’t want you back.”
Well, this year not even the Kardashians could throw me a bone considering they have all lightened their hair too and even when I dialed my sis prepared for a lecture, instead I got:
“Yeah, I agree. You need a change.”
Now I was left with finding a hair-magician brave enough and skilled enough to take on the task.
Luckily I found Lacy.
(remember the hot blonde from a few weeks ago?)
As it turns out (she’s so humble and laid back I’d never have known without a little nosey-ness) she’s a totally legit hairdresser. People fly her all over the country to do their hair, she used to be a stylist at the Belagio in Las Vegas and she owns her own hair extension company. (check that out here)
What she was able to do, with my seven years of black on black on black-dyed-long-thick-fine-hair…was nothing short of a miracle.

Oh my gosh! That looks phenomenal! Yes, I want to go blonde too, just the right amount of blonde like yours. I can’t do bleachy beachy.
It looks gorgeous! Maybe its the right time to bring up the issue of combating “brassiness” when going from brown to blonde – I went blonde (attempted to) about a month ago – I have light-medium brown hair with natural reddish undertones (visible in sunlight) – and my blonde result was orange-y and brassy – dissapointing! They redid it a couple days after but its still really warm toned. Now I am using a purple shampoo (L’oreal professional Shine blonde) which helps combat the orange tones – and am debating whether a more expensive salon would be better for next run – if there is a next run at all (and the salon I went to to begin with was certainly not inexpensive…)
Cara, do you have advice – I’m thinking I really need to be clear about asking for a ‘cold’ blond next time, to be clear the orange-y honey result is not ok!
Or ask for “ash” blonde
Im a hair colorist with 15 yrs experience. Let me tell you it is nearly impossible to get a ashy color when starting with dark hair. Esp if you are doing an all over color. Your fighting mother nature all the way. And the maintance is high…I recommend people usually not to do this unless money and time are not factors. 3 week visits to the Salon are not fun. And why do you think “more expensive” salons survive….their technicians have a vast amount of knowledge, not to mention a mixing room filled with every product/color available. I can’t imagine how long this took Cara, and what the cost would if been, in an “expensive salon”. Ladies…..you get what you pay for in most cases. Dont risk it if you cant afford it!!!

Ahhhh I love! I’ve been stalking lacy on Instagram trying to get her to come to Houston and do my hair. I’ve been dark for 2 years after my beautiful blonde “touch-up” went terribly wrong. I’m obsessed with getting my hair light again BUT I’m a 24/7 clip in extension girl so I’m super nervous to dye then not find any that match.
What do you suggest?? Color then get the extensions or vice versa, but extensions and color to match??

Pretty! It suits you! I just went from dark auburn back to blonde, myself. My natural blonde is a mousey dishwater color, but my “fake” blonde is much nicer. I think the only color I haven’t done is a *red* red.

Wow!! Incredibly gorgeous! I just colored my hair back to dark brown after it had been this shade for a year or so, and i am already missing my lighter locks! I know you’ve gotten tons of comments on this, but you should definitely write about how you got such a lovely shade rather than orange/red tones. I tried everything under the sun, from toners to purple shampoos, but couldn’t keep the brassiness away.

After working tirelessly to maintain a super fun red for 4 months of fall/winter, I just recently went back to a soft black. My hair is grateful and I’m currently basking in the low maintenance, so I’m hoping that will sustain me through the spring-lightening itch. Haha

WOW, you look amazing! I’m usually a fan of darker hair (specially with someone with light eyes and a nice tan like you) but this color loos AWESOME on you. It brings so much more softness and light to your face. And the color is not too blonde, it’s very “brazilian, VS model, i naturally look this good” coloring! I think if you ever go back to dark hair you should go to medium brown, I think the black might be too harsh on you.

Linda is a bit of a Debbie Downer…she is right about the upkeep and damage but you only live once! If someone is ready to make the time, damage and money commitment I say go for it. And when you’re sick of paying close to $200 every 6 weeks (and that’s pushing it with the root regrowth), give your hair and wallet a rest and go back to the dark side
But for now, rock that hair, Cara!!!

Your hair looks great! So, now that you are lighter, can you maybe do a topic on SUN-IN? I have naturally light hair, and use Sun-in to make it blonder and to add the effect of highlights. Do you know if I can ever dye it, given I use Sun-In religiously?

It is GORGEOUS!! I am a natural blonde but have been getting highlights for about 3 years now. Since it’s already light I only have to go about 3-4 times a year. Having a good colorist is a MUST! My hair looks natural and the color is always perfect. Yay for healthy, pretty blonde hair!

OMG i love your hair lighter! It looks beautiful dark too, but this really brightens up and brings out your eyes.:) My hair is a mousy brown and i have been highlighting it for a few years. Also to blend in the grays lol. I had to go in stages to get the perfect blonde, but i don’t have any damage cause i only freshen up the roots now when needed. So your hair should be find when you achieve the perfect blonde or however light you want to go, but i love the color it’s at now!

I have naturally black hair, and dye it soft black (sadly, I am greying….since the age of 18) and I decided a little over a year ago that I wanted light brown hair…….My hair was the unhealthiest it has ever been. Ive spent over a year now (basically since a week after the lightening) trying to get health back into it. I finally have almost enough growth where the dead hair is gone, but it has taken FOREVER! I for one will not be doing that again. But hopefully you had a better skilled stylist and better hair because mine had great color but just DRY and BRITTLE and straight up awful. Yours looks MUCH healthier though!

Stunning!! I am a blonde and always have been way light blonde and started going a touch darker with “ombre” and I like it OK but I miss my super light but know how damaging it is. You look amazing with both dark and light hair.
I love it! I was literally at the hairdresser today wanting to go blond, thought of you and all your tips on upkeep for dark hair and thought, “oh no, how am I going to get tips from Cara if my hair is blond?” I decided to take the process slow (also I’m chicken and have been known to cry after hair changes) so I opted for six highlights with the intention to get more next time. Haha, but with your new look, I feel I have the courage to make my next visit to the salon a little sooner! Here I thought I would be looking at your posts and coveting your dark hair if I went blond, I chickened out and you went for it! Any tips or tricks to make the process of dark to blond less painful/ awkward looking? Also, after changing hair color like that, do you have to get new foundation color?… or makeup colors in general?

I love it! So pretty, and it doesn’t look like it got damaged in the processes. I am a colorist, and I am thinking about how I would go about changing your hair like you did. I am guessing she put lightener all over everything for a llittle bit, and then toned that to a nice light brown. Then she ombred the ends and toned that to a champage color? Hmmm…cant wait to see what she did to see if I was close!
I have ombre hair too, and I use coconut oil on my hair overnight every once in awhile to keep it soft and shiny. Shampoo and condition like ususal in the morning. It really does help! Thanks for your contant inspiration!

I have been itching to go from my 3N color to a Mila Kunis like ombré but fear the damage. I’m obsessed with my hair feeling healthy and soft + shiny so I was discouraged. You have changed my mind! i can’t wait for the ‘how to’ next week! i’ve had black hair for 3 1/2 years & when i saw this i told my stylist, time to go back to blonde… NOW. she said it will take months to do, but i told her nuh uhhhh, this girl did it all at once! this is very close to my natural color. it’s gorgeous!
I just did this to my hair too! I have NEVER dyed my hair and my natural color was a chestnut brown. I finally took the plunge and my stylist was able to get me to just about the same color as you are now

Beautiful as ever! And it looks like it’s in great condition as well. Do you know which color line and lightener she used? I’m naturally a level 4 but have used a level 3 on mine for years.But after seeing yours a change may possibly be in the air!

So so gorgeous. I have always been dark and have allowed my hair to lighten up to a more auburn color over the past year. Its funny what you said about watching the Kardashians to help you keep your dark hair, because watching YOUR videos have made me want to dye my hair super dark again. haha
I have considered though going the other direction and lightening it, but as you know, my hair stylist really warns me against it.

Aww… I wish you had a few more tips in this post- I’m actually getting my hair done tomorrow morning and have been wanting to go back to blonde. I’ve had dark brown/auburn hair for about 5 years. I tried going lighter again last year, but my ends got incredibly damaged so I chickened out and went back to brunette. Maybe your tips and tricks post will go up early tomorrow morning so I can use them!

It looks so good!! I have been wanting a change sooo badly! I tried to go blonde and that ended up in a disaster. I still want to go lighter though! I have been dark for so long now I would love for someone to give it a makeover and not screw it up lol!

Cara, I know that you have done a couple how to curl videos, but they are all very full curls (which I love) however, I was wondering how you curled your hair for these pictures? Is it just natural or did you use a specific size curling iron? Every time I try and do this kind of look it usually ends up with too big of curls or straight stringy hair. Thanks!!
