I love guys. I think they are pretty cool as a whole but
there are certain guy things that I just can’t get on bored with, I know I’m over-generalizing here, using mostly just personal experience and thousands of Cosmo polls as my source but… go with it…
Their love of Transporter 2 (or 3 for that matter)
March Mustache Madness.
Their disregard for public itching etiquette ( you know what I’m taking about)
And most importantly
Their lack luster views on red lipstick.
Much to my eternal dismay Dudes seem to prefer simplicity.
Girl next door.
Aka easy on the hot pink and glitter.
Aka no more fun and excitement.
Girl next door.
Aka easy on the hot pink and glitter.
Aka no more fun and excitement.
My general response to that is…
Love me or leave me but I’m going to wear shiny leggings and bright lipstick when and if I please, sir.
But some days…days like Valentine’s for instance…
When I really want to pull out the big guns…
I put on an old t-shirt and jeans and do my hair and makeup in my very best ”this old thing?” Impression.
This smokey eye and pale pink lip I used on Lacy earlier this week is the perfect recipe.
It says, “my makeup looked perfect yesterday but I slept in it and woke up looking like this.
But I don’t care cause I am so low maintenance.”

Guys eat that stuff up.
And …
I guess if I’m being honest,
So do I, every once in a while.

Sweet! Definitely gonna try this!
*etiquette. great post:)
Love smokey eye, love black liquid liner – my problem? Whenever i apply to my lash line it doesn’t stay and immediately begins to tear into a big leaky mess! I consider myself pretty good at doing makeup but for the life i cant get it to stay put. I always have to resort to putting it under the line which doesn’t have the same ‘lined’ effect. Tried this with both liquid and pencil liner. Help!
Carly, I always had the same problem. HOWEVER I saw something on another beauty blog (the beauty department) about how to make the eyeliner stay put on the lash line but shouldn’t be used often (aka every day). Put the liner (I always use either pencil or gel liner) on your lash line, then using black eyeshadow pat the powder over the liner on your lash line (I use an angled brush) and it will stay put. It is the only thing that has worked for me and made the black stay on my lash line. I only do it for special occasions though
Yes! Set your liner with a powder, it helps it stay on all day
I love your eyeshadow primer mix!!! It works fabulously!
My question: how do you get your complexion to look so dewy? By the time I get finished concealing and Hacing, mine looks little dull
Plus my age (54) adds to that natural lack of moisture.
Thanks!
Love your posts,
Sheshe
You should try a hydrating mist. Put it on when you finish your makeup. It sets your makeup and gives you a dewy look.
Great tutorial! I’d say hazel is brown/green.
My eyes are more prominent and you can see most of the eyelid when my eyes are open. I really dislike that! I never like putting a lot of color there because I feel like it looks horrible and draws too much attention. Plus my eye color is a really pale blue/gray and my complexion is fair so I feel like I look like a raccoon. In your pics, you can see the outline of color with your eyes open and the eyeshadow looks amazing when you look down or close your eyes. Do you recommend a smoky look for the prominent eye? Do you have any suggestions on what I can do with my eye shape?
I just had to say, most people try everything to make their eyes stand out more, don’t be self conscious, ROCK IT GIRL:)
Great look! I would also suggest a felt tip liner to those women who struggle with liquid liner. I think it’s easier to apply and smudges less. I’ve been using (and loving) Kat Von D’s tattoo liner, although I’m sure NYX’s felt tip liner is worth a try!
Oh and I would describe hazel eyes as green/brown.
I would love a tutorial for grey eyes! My eyes are blue-grey, with a black ring around the iris. I have fair skin and dark hair, and the smokey look always ends up looking too harsh.
I think hazel means basically any mix of eye color. So any eye color that can’t be classified as just blue or green or brown. Mine are a hazel blue color ( blueish-grayish-greenish) but generally I think people classify hazel as green brown. Maybe do a green brown and a green blue eye? Love your posts!
I didn’t think you were going to do a hazel eyes video because like you said, there’s such a wide range! Haha I was always told my eyes were hazel but whenever I look it up (on google or when you see colored contacts) it’s almost a shade of brown? I don’t know, but my eyes are dark green with light brown around the pupil. Haha hope that helps, I’m sure the video will be great! (:
You’re right, it’s that prefect “I’m super low maintence” look that guys just drool over! Now as far as what hazel eye color is, that one is tough. I’m classified as having hazel eyes, but I got the old magnifying mirror out (I hate those things) & checked mine. My hazel eyes start with deep green, then to a bright/light green, to a golden fawn color before the pupil. These colors also change dramatically with clothing color as well as emotion, as they do with everyone (which is one of those beautiful things I love to see), but I find it more so in those with hazel eyes because of the wide range of colors within the eye itself. If I’m wearing gray I have intensely green eyes, browns bring out the golden color, etc. I had been trying to morphe the brown & green looks into one hazel look, so glad that you are going to take the work outta that for me! And just so you know, your blog is inspiring to me. I’m not a makeup pro by any means, but I’m getting a little more confident with your help! Thanks so much!
I have the same color hazel eyes! I find that if i wear black or grey liner the green “pops” more. Also I’ve been seeing makeup artists using navy eye liner on people with hazel eyes and surprisingly it looks really good.
*charcoal grey
I think Hazel eye color is when your eye color is more then one obvious color. Not an obvious brown, blue, or green. My pet peeve is when people with light BROWN eyes say they have Hazel eyes.
Great post Cara! Smokey eye is something we all have tried and or use I am so excited for your Hazel post! I have hazel eyes, and to me (& everyone in my area) hazel eyes are Green & brown! I feel like the world “hazel” itself means there is brown involved! (Hazelnuts?)
Love your tutorials. And PS ~ love your wedding ring .. simple, understated, yet Gorgeous!
You are a wonderful breath of fresh air! I love your posts & you are such a great example of beauty inside & out! Thank you so much for all your fabulous tutorials. I love this understated look, it really is the perfect V-day look! My husband hates when my lips are too sticky or if I get glitter on his face!! LOL!!! I’ll definitely be using a version of this look!
Is this the right nude lipstick? I can only find ‘nude’ not ‘nude soap.’ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005FYJB92/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
LOVE LOVE LOVE your blog!! My husband may have to send me to a make-up addiction recovery program soon…
Hi brookeherd! It’s just nude. Soap is the beginning of the next product “Soap & Glory” brand.
The Sephora Airbrush is my fave! I’m so glad you mentioned about the low crease. I’m the same way and I finally realized (after watching your tutorials) that I needed to consider the “crease” as higher up. Thanks so much!
Cara, would the Naked 2 palette work for this look? Seems like some of the colors are similar!
Love, love your blog!
Great question. I was wondering the exact same thing.
Cara, I LOVE your blog. You’re amazing at your tutorials. I’ve learned so much.
Oh, and I’ve always thought hazel eyes were brown/green eyes.
As Cara said in the video, you can use any color your comfortable with. Although, the lighter shade of eye shadow you use, the less noticeable the smokey eye will be; but if you’ve never tried a smokey eye before, or you just feel it looks weird when you do, you may want to go with a more natural shade at first.
I also wondered about using the naked 2 palatte! Could you show us how to created it using the Naked 2 palette? I have it, but I am terrible at picking the right colors that go together.
PS: I love your blog, Cara!
I never knew about putting the color all around your eye in a circle until I saw your blog..Going to try this Smokey eye tonight..Thank you!
Thanks Cara! My take away is the foundation, then highlight technique. I’m loving that #55 brush btw! The perfectionist smokey eye thing is so true! Once I get it perfect, it doesn’t stay perfect and I can’t deal! Hazel eyes= green/brown mix…Oh, I’m going to go look for that Mink eye pencil today! I usually have no luck with lip liner either because I have pouffy lips and no matter what I do I get the ring around the lips later. Anyway, I am obsessed, keep ‘em coming!
Thanks Cara! I love this tutorial. I am marching out to buy the eyeshadow! I have a question about eyelashes. I love them and want to wear them, but are they too fancy for day time? Can you wear them everyday? What are the rules about the lashes? Are there any? I look forward to your tutorials all the time. Have a great day!
Hi Cara! Let me start by telling you that I just adore your site! Your tutorials are amazing. I work from home and it’s been too easy to get into the slump of not getting “done up”, and you’ve actually inspired me! I’ve probably tried every one of your looks! Lol. They’ve all been quite simple to follow! Thank you! May I ask you what color you use on your hair?
Hazel=green +brown. (In my opinion) I have never heard hazel described as anything else. I have hazel eyes so I am looking forward to a tutorial!!
Brown/green for hazel:) excited for the video!
Love the simplicity and sexiness of this look! xxx
http://unstitchedd.blogspot.co.uk
As always I LOVE your posts! I shared your natural beauty post on my FB page and got lots of great responses! You rock! My eyes are hazel so thank you very much for a tute on that! They change from brownish gold to greenish gold (thank you mood swings). I love to wear brown/pink combo clothes and yes, I think I’ve determined that a ‘smokey’ eye on me is not black/gray but dark brown/golds. Well, I hope that is right! I’m having problems with my contouring looking too harsh. Either I can’t tell I have anything on or all of a sudden it seems I have too much. I’ve been using the Physician’s Formula with the little hearts in the palette. Last, what can you recommend for touching up make-up after work? After a day of phone calls, scratching an itchy nose, etc my make-up needs refreshing. I’ve tried to dab with a tissue then reapply some foundation but then it looks cakey. HELP!
Try this DIY makeup setting spray: http://vanyvicious.com/?p=39 I use it and love it more than the Jane Iredale and Clinique versions I’ve bought!
I have “hazel” as my eye color on my driver license because my eye color changes with my mood, the weather and what I’m wearing. They go from darkest brown to pale golden brown to green/brown with blue flecks. My mom says one time as a child while crying hysterically my eyes changed to highlighter green. That said I think hazel is a general term for not all brown or blue or green.
P.S. You look lovely as always.
Awesome, I am going to use this for my hot date with my husband on Valentine’s day! I have always thought of hazel as a mix of brown and green. It has never even occurred to me that it could be anything but that. Someone else mentioned they have grey eyes and I am all over that bandwagon. My eyes have always been a blue/green mix but more on the side of green. However I have been told by many that my eyes are grey (including my 4 year old) sooooooo if you have any awesome suggestions to make those eyes pop that’d be great. Til then I will use shades for green eyes
I have a question about the away you lined the lower lids. Did you use the liquid eyeliner INSIDE the water line? I couldn’t tell for sure from the video.
Thanks!
Deb
Love it. As always.
Also, hazel to me is a mix of both green and brown.
Thanks!
Hazel – green and brown
love you tutorials!! i’m so going to try this…i love the look of a smokey eye, but haven’t mastered it.
my eyes are “hazel” which is green with brown/gold flecks.
thanks!
*your (spell check)
To me hazel is green-brown mix. I would love it if you would do a tutorial on grey eyes, mine are a grey/green mix.
Love it! Going to try the smokey eye tonight. And I’ve always thought hazel is a brown-green mix. My dad and daughter both have hazel and I LOVE hazel.
thank goodness my hubby loves smokey eyes…and red red lipstick.
Hazel is green/brown and I’m super excited for your tutorial since that is my eye color. Can’t wait!!
Awesome, thanks Cara.
Funny, I have hazel eyes… green with a copper ring around the pupil, but the shades change from bright green to almost grey.
Can’t wait for the hazel tutorial.
BTW… I am having trouble with my brushes, I thought I had good ones but the all shed. What do you recommend?
Thanks,
Julie
Here is her post on brushes: http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/12/14/the-science-of-brushes/ At the bottom there are links to the Sephora versions that are pictured. I bought the #55 one because of this post and I am obsessed!
Hazel eyes – I’m with the green/brown. I joke with people that my eyes are more like army camo green. Some days they read really green (but mossy green) and other days they read more brown. My sister has flecks of gold in hers so they pick up light differently. The one thing I’ve noticed is that lining the inner rim of my lashes makes them stand out more. the issue with it for me is that my eyes are already small (1/2 asian and 1/2 scandinavian). I’m a hot mess. I think I need a CUSTOM tutorial for hooded eyes, small eyelids, freckles AND hazel eyes.
I love your tutorials (and am probably wearing a lot more fun makeup as a result). I’ve shared them with all my girlfriends too. The only other thing I can’t quite translate is the lipstick because I have a lot of pigment naturally in my lips so I need a heavier nude to get my lips to “recede”. I’ve found Kat Von D’s Celebutard with a generous application of gloss on top of it (it’s pretty dry) works wonders!
oh – and I’d love to see any tips/tricks on makeup REMOVAL and cleaning/reusing false eyelashes.
I agree with Christine! I’d love to see tips on removing and cleaning/reusing false eyelashes!
Hi Cara,
Great tutorial, as usual!!
I too have hazel eyes. They change depending on the light….they can be anywehere from an ocre brown to an army green with dark olive green and gold flecks.
Can’t wait!
OMG Love this. And i’ve been told I have hazel eyes: they are mostly green but with a circle of brown right around the iris. Depending on the lighting (or what I’m wearing) they can look more brown than green or vice-versa. Thank you for your help, Cara!
Oops – I guess I meant brown around the pupil.
Cara, I sincerely love your blog. I definitely get in makeup/hair ruts and it is such a breath of fresh air. I am always so excited when you post something new. My eyes are brown/green with some gold and I have always considered them hazel but maybe it is just any combination of colors. Either way I would love to see a look for brown/green eyes.
I consider my eyes green though some may say they are hazel. Definitely darker than your green eyes Cara! More of a moss color.
I love your tutorials, you are SO beautiful and helpful!
Great tutorial, as always! You’ve literally changed the way I put on make up, and I thank you for it, because I feel like I look more like myself, but better. Anyways, that said, Hazel eyes: my eyes are look brown from far away, but up close, they’re really a combo of gold and green and brown. It’s like I have a brown ring around the pupil, and then a ring of gold and green around that.
Hope that helps!
I am so happy you put up a video! Its been so long! Love every minute of it. Hazel-greeny brown
My hazel is dark green with brown undertones Great video!
I’ve purchased a few smaller brushes at Target. Both the Sonya Kashuk and Up&Up and they were great. I’m still saving for the larger ones though.
this was in reply to Julie’s comment above about brushes…. not sure why it jumped all the way down here…. sorry….
OMG I just tried this look and for the first time my attempts at a smokey eye didn’t make me look like a Goth Raccoon! I thought to myself “Do I reeeeally need to buy more eye shadow?”. But then I decided to go for it and you’re ABSOLUTELY right – the Caffeine Rush palette is unique in how smokey/ashy the browns are creating a perfect smokey eye with such ease. A totally worthy addition!
And it worked SO fast! It took me less than 2 minutes to do the shadow part and the “make a little C” trick worked like a charm. OMG I’m in love with my eyes . Thank you so much for your awesome blog which has taken me from someone who wears make up once every 2 months to someone who puts it on even on days I work from home because it’s suddenly so much fun! I used to be so bored with make up but no more! Thank you thank you thank you!
For me hazel = brown + green.
Love it all!!!!!!
My eyes have always been described as “hazel” maybe because there’s no other color to use to describe. They are blue around the outside, then green, with gold flecks around the pupil. Can’t wait to see the video!
I have hazel eyes and my eyes can be green, brown, greenish brown and grey so I think hazel is just in mix of colors but I think no matter what there’s is usually green in them.
I love this! I have grayish blue eyes and ive always tried doing the smokey eye with blacks and it was WAY too harsh. This is very prettyand natural though, do you think you could also do a gray eye tutorial? but still hacing? i npticed in the blue eye post you did it was for very fair skin tones. Love your blog!
Hi Cara, Love the post! Do you think the Lorac Pro Palette would work for this look?
Your tutorials are a great help. I think hazel eyes vary. I have hazel and the look of them changes depending on light and what I’m wearing (not just makeup, but clothes). They always have a green base but can look like they lean to a brown shade or a blue shade, but the green is always there sometimes strong and sometimes just an undertone.
I agree with the ladies on the grey eye tutorial! I have blue/grey/green eyes with a dark ring and typical blue eye looks do nothing for me. I haven’t really seen any worthwhile advice on this and it sounds like a lot of others have the same issue.
Hazel means brown green! Just wondering why you used the Bobbi Brown bronzer rather than the Bahama Mama .. am fair skinned, blonde, hazel eyed and trying to decide on which bronzer would be a good one to buy for contouring .. any ideas?
I have Hazel eyes and mine are green/brown. I love them because I can use makeup that compliment brown eyes and green eyes and as well as the mixture of the two! I hope you choose green and brown hazel!
The thing about the color HAZEL is that chameleon quality. In some ways that makes us hazel girls lucky, in others it’s a pain. I would rather have standard green eyes, but hazel is my lot. Because of that, i am a hazel girl who likes to use makeup to make the peepers look more green. According to the DMV hazel is either brown green or blue green. Both have the green with golden fleck element. And like most of the comments here, it changes with light color clothing and MAKEUP! So, help us out!
P.s. new to your blog from Pintrest. Love it so far! Born and bred Utahn. Question: I am not used to the red lip, have fair ish skin brown hair, hazel eyes. How do I pick the right shade red for me?
Thanks for another great tutorial! I love that you used warm tones as opposed to the cool charcoal that most people refer to when doing a smokey eye. As far as hazel eyes go, I have them, and they’re green/brown.
Hello you are fantastic! You have helped me out so much with learning how to branch out and do my makeup really well- although I’m still learning! I have hazel eyes and I really don’t think that any two pair of hazel eyes are the same. My eyes are primarily green and blue with little flecks of gold in them and they “change colors” depending on the light that is hitting them, what I’m wearing or the color of my hair. So having hazel eyes is a good and bad thing at times bc I can really go with any color makeup to bring out a specific color but then I can’t really specifically define just one color that looks best for my eyes….. And like I said before, every persons hazel eyes are different so I don’t know you’re going to pick just one color to do the tutorial but I’m sure whatever you do pick will be beautiful like usual good luck!
Hi cara… My daughter is two and she has the most hazel colored eyes i have ever seen… They are literally gold with tons of olive green flecks through them and a Lil blue here and there. Depending on the color i put her in, her eyes change to every color. I never understood what people meant when they said hazel because they always looked brown or green to me and i even had a friend who tried to claim she had hazel because they changed different shades of blue (only because the guy she was dating liked hazel.. Another story. Lol), but when i had my daughter and her eyes became the color, it was extremely evident to me. She had hazel because they have every color in them and they literally change from a golden blue to a golden green to a golden brown! Every person that looks at her ask me what color her eyes are.. Hazel is such a mystery but gorgeous.
Oh my gosh I could not agree with you more on the guys point of view, every time I wear red lipstick my husband says “you look pretty but I like your natural lips better” (which are almost always not natural but light pink or nude lol)
Great tutorial and the first time EVER I’ve been successful with a smokey eye!! Also, I have brown green eyes and consider them hazel. Cannot wait for a tutorial on eyeshadow for hazel!
My “hazel” eyes are green brown. Though my son’s are blue grey and they’re considered “hazel” too. I’d also thought green brown was hazel, so we call his “grey-zel”!!
Hazel to me is pale green with brown.
Can you do this look with a pencil liner? I naturally have thick dark lashes so I don’t use a liner much which makes me nervous when using a black liner.
I am so in love with your blog! I say that hazel is brown/green. I’m excited to try this look out tomorrow!
I have hazel eyes – brown/green – depending on my outfit or eye makeup, they will appear more brown or more green… would love a tute on that color….. Great job as always!
Love, love your blog! I have tried almost every single tutorial you have done! Couple questions…can this smokey eye be done for a wedding or should something different be done? Also I have tried highlighting and contouring tons and I have a really flat face or maybe round but my cheek bones do not stand out at all and then I don’t know where to put blush or bronzer. Can you help please??
Funny you should mention this. Me and my sister talked about this just the other day. I myself have Hazel eyes. It can be brown/green or green/brown. From a distance it usually looks more like a brown. I find it very VERY hard to find suited colors. But then again almost any color can work as long as you apply it well (as in not too obvious) . Love your Blog!
Definitely going to use this for a date next week!!! and I have hazel eyes they are brown and green and I would really appreciate a video on it!!!
what did you use to fill in your brows?? I can’t seem to get the perfect color shadow or pencil to get mine just right! LOVE your blog! Seriously my favorite beauty blog, and you are seriously GOREGOUS!! love love love all your tips and tricks and everything
This is Cara’s eyebrow tutorial: http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2011/04/20/brow-power-as-easy-as-1-2-3/
Hazel I would say is green with brown!
Hazel. Dictionary Definition: A light to strong brown or yellowish brown. Hazel eyes are renowned for containing glints of many colors. Their predominant color seems to be a pale- to medium-golden brown, especially radiating out from around the pupil. However, they usually contain a lot of yellow and blue rays farther out in the iris that combine to look like green. So hazel eyes will have a brownish-green appearance. However, because of the blue rays in the iris, hazel eyes can sometimes appear more blue or gray, depending upon the colors worn by the individual.
Does anyone know the recipe for “Cara’s concealer”? I’ve looked and can’t find anything on it. Also, is there a list of blogs by title/date that I don’t see instead of having to scroll from page to page?
She hasn’t revealed it yet…
Thank you Miss Viola!
This girl loves her some Transporter movies. That Jason Statham is dreamy.
I have hazel eyes and they are greenish brown and i would LOVE to see a suggestion that doesn’t involve purple shadow! Everyone tries to give me purple shadow for my hazel eyes and it always looks funny … and thanks for the video. i am totally trying a smoky eye tonight .
My eyes are a green/brown with some yellow specs. I’ve been told that they are Hazel, but I really don’t know.
I think that hazel eyes just mean a mix of colors
You are stunning! and your tutorials are absolutely amazing! AND the fact that you list the products you use under your videos is so so SO awesome! I just have one question for you, how in the heck do you get your teeth so freaking white?? Thanks!

I consider my eyes hazel and they’re green/brown. Love your tutorials!!!
