My Secret Weapon

There are thousands of makeup artists out there.
Many of whom are better than me at a bundle of things.
I am not a perfectionist
I am somewhat clumsy
and
I can be impatient.
You would think I’d be a hot mess with makeup!

But I have a secret.

It is (in a nutshell) the reason I can  do what I do and more importantly, it’s the reason I love to.

I see beauty.

Beauty in every face I have ever laid eyes on.
Anyone I’ve had the privilege of making up would tell you it’s true. When I do their makeup I can hardly shut my mouth about how gorgeous they are.
I am dazzled by the length lashes, dewy skin, full cheeks, stunning eyes, aquiline noses, naturally arched brows ….I could go on all day.
Never have I encountered a face that I didn’t find beauty in.

I think I am able to see the beauty on other faces so easily because I am able to see the beauty in this one…

not because it is better or worse than anyone else’s, but because it’s mine, it’s the only one I’m ever going to have and I am grateful for it.

Many people approach makeup as damage control.
They look at their face and see negatives and then look to cosmetics for new ways to cover up and hide them.

My mom used to read me a story called “Hildalids Night.” About a woman who hated the night so bad that every time the sun went down she got to work trying all sorts of methods to rid the world of darkness (none of which work) and by the time morning comes she’s exhausted and falls asleep for the rest of the day.

Sounds silly, doesn’t it?

Beautiful.

You are an angel.
Approach makeup with only that in mind.
And who knows? maybe that love and acceptance will carry into other parts of your life…

Very beautiful!! I have a niece who LOVES make up, and we’re trying to guide her so that she doesn’t see herself as ugly without makeup – just that she is beautiful on the inside, which is what makes her beautiful on the outside. Her soul… is so beautiful.

I love this post! I’ve been following your blog for awhile and I love it but I especially love this entry. As I age I’ve tried harder to use makeup to “fix” my face. I now have a new perspective. I will only use it to enhance and I will look for the beauty in every face. Thank you for the dose of reality and the true inner beauty you give.

Cara- you’re adorable inside and out. I love your humble confidence. You are amazing!!!

  45. Janice says:

I feel prettiest with no make up. I by no means think I’m gorgeous. When I wear make up I literally feel like I’m wearing a mask. Bronzer and the occasional mascara is where I’m most comfortable. When I try to get all dolled up I think I look worse. Is it possible that some women really do look best natural or am I just doing it all wrong??? Cara, I adore you, you are too sweet for words

  46. Annie says:

Seriously, BEST POST EVER! I love your confidence and that you want to pass that on and help every woman realize her real beauty. I really do appreciate this post so much, so thank you! Also, where in Utah are you located? I’m in Taylorsville and would love to hire you to do my makeup sometime!

You always look beautiful, but you look so young without makeup! (a good thing) You look like a teenager! This post was just what I needed to read today. Lately my skin has been acting up and I’m feeling ugly and makeup feels like a chore instead of fun. Thanks for the inspirational post

  50. merve says:

Thanks, Cara! Today is my birthday and this totally lifted my spirits even higher! You have the ability to make people you don’t even know feel really good about themselves, and that is so special! Thanks for helping us all improve ourselves, and not just with makeup

  59. beautiful post! I really liked your blog before but after reading that it makes me love it even more. To know that is your theory behind makeup and how you view the world is awesome. In this day and age and in a world where the “beauty” that is portrayed is unrealistic and not even real, to have this attitude about people is amazing. It would be wonderful if every young girl (and boy) got to read that and we could get them to believe that they are beautiful and dont have to succumb to an realistic stereotype of beauty,….. Ive tried over the years and it didnt do me any good – Ive only now started to accept my flaws as beautiful and become comfortable in my own skin.
    Thank you Cara! you rock

Absolutely beautiful post. It feels so good sometimes, to just step back and really think about things like that. Love the Michelangelo quote. The beauty on the inside is what really count’s. I love everything about your blog, but I really hope to maybe hear similar posts like today’s, in the future. Keep it all coming, girl .

And this is why I come here. Love it and you.

  80. Saarah says:

I’m sobbing! Thank for that gift you just gave me. I feel like I’ve lost sight of seeing that in myself. Until last year of college my skin was flawless, I never even washed my face or put makeup, I wasn’t frumpy or plain, it’s just how I looked was not something I thought about or questioned, I really felt I looked great without make-up, and I got that feeling in return from people, I was confident in being as I was. Adult cystic acne began that last year of college and wreaked havoc on my once no fuss appearance, a few pounds later and being a mommy now for 2 years and now I am just frantic to restore some level of confidence by covering covering covering. Your words made me realize really I need to peel back and my inner acceptance is what brought the beauty out in the past. Thank you thank you thank you

  81. Priscilla says:

I love all of your post, but I especially love this one! It’s so true!!!! You are amazing!!

  83. Jill says:

What a beautiful post! I have to say that I have very bad scaring on my face from skin cancer, and I always seem to want to cover it up. But after reading your post, I understand that it’s not about covering it up, it’s about bringing out the beauty that lies under it. Thanks you!

  84. lindsey says:

I was feeling a little blue until I came across your page. Thank you for the kind words and making me take the time to think about what really matters.

  85. Rita says:

  88. I absolutely love this. It is so easy to get caught up in “perfecting” a face that it is easy to forget the beauty which was present all along. Thank you so much reminding us all of this.

  89. Rachel says:

Now I have a cheesy smile on my face. She said I’m an angel! Lol This is such a great post to have on a site that is all about makeup. You have to love YOU first! Enhance your own beauty… I’ll have to remember that. We’re always our worst critic, I know I’m mine. Thanks for this.
