Victoria’s Secret Hair Tutorial

Well, Hello! Wanted to show you how I did the VS hair from last week, I am trying something new, a photo tutorial instead this time. I figured it would be nice because you can get all the goods without committing to a whole video. Let me know if yous think it’s a good idea, or a terrible idea.

Also,
My hair is already pretty thick so this takes me a long time (like 45 minutes) to do this from start to finish, but if you have shorter hair than mine or thinner it shouldn’t take you nearly as long!

Supplies: (not including the extra hair…we’ll get to that in a second)
Curling Iron {here} -this is a really good price for this tool!
Duck Clips {here} - side note: get them here or at Sally’s the duck clips they sell at Walmart and Walgreens are weak and don’t work for me.
Hairspray {here} or if you aren’t wanting to spend that much use this one {here}

First Section:

Second Section:

Top Section (and bangs):

Extensions: ( I am not a self professed clip-in expert, I have never really been taught how to use them, this is just what I do and it works for me, so if you have any suggestions, please comment!)

I curled these a few weeks ago so I didn’t need to today (which is really nice) but if you are starting with straight clip-ins clamp them to your hand towel holder with a big clip and curl them the same way you curled your hair. Then I lay them right on top of the curls so they can set without having to clip them:

Get some hair {here}

Since I just curled my hair I carefully pull up the sections and use a clip to keep it out of the way while I put my borrowed hair in.

Now I’m gonna go to bed cause it’s almost 1 am, so if you are looking at this tomorrow morning and you notice a bunch of grammatical errors, I apologize, I think my brain stopped working an hour or so ago…but let’s be honest, even at full capacity my brain still can’t manage an error free post.
Love you all!

    • Cara says:

Oh I bet you looked so pretty! I am so glad to hear it, I know HACing can take some trial and error so I am extatic it worked for you the first time! You’re a natural…

    LOVE the photo tutorial!

  6. Rachael says:

Uhm, so I *may* have spent all weekend surreptitiously devouring your entire site…. all, like, 65 back pages of entries… whoops! I guess you can say I love your site! I went out and bought Rimmel bronzer yesterday… lol. Anyway, I love the photo tutorial idea. I like videos but when I play them my toddler toddles over and asks a bunch of questions and then I can’t actually hear the video. Photos are easier!

  7. Emily says:

Love this tutorial! Where do you purchase your extensions? Thanks!!

    • nancy says:

Once again – you are amazing!! I really like the picture tutorial. IT was so well thought through and organized to perfectin!

  8. Kesley says:

Love your site! But I do find the video tutorials more helpful when it comes to curling and clipping just so we can see the techniques you’re using

  9. ashley says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the photo tutorial. In fact, that’s the only bummer I’ve ever had was that I had to sit & watch a whole video. I have a 3 year old and that’s pretty impossible. The photos are easy to follow. Fantastic!

  10. Katie says:

Thanks for the photo tutorial. I love the hair and it was definitely easier for me to look through the pictures instead of watching the video. I’m loving your blog!

  11. Thedressychick says:

I like both pictorials and videos. Which one is more work for you? I know for the folks who sneak a peek at work pictorials are much quieter

    • Cara says:

I would say they are pretty comparable as far as effort for me, I agree about the work thing though, I remember when I worked at my desk job and was totally busted if a video or sound bite came on! haha

  12. Alicia says:

I also love the photo’s! The perfect post! Thanks!!

  13. Jess says:

First of all, love your blog, second, love the pic tutorial. Thought it was just as great as the videos! Keep our daily dose of fab tricks a comin!

  14. Mary Ellen says:

I can’t tell you how much love your blog! I did the same as the reader before me – went through every page of your site last week! All of your tutorials are amazing. I did HAC and Mila Kunis’s eyes for dinner Saturday and everyone noticed a difference. I got so many compliments.
I just want to say thank you for all your help. I’ve always been terrible and makeup and hair but with your tutorials, it’s been so fun.
Also, I like both the video and the picture tutorials. Sometimes it’s easy to see the picture tutorial but I really like seeing the videos as well to make sure I know exactly what you’re doing.

  15. Jenni says:

Just curious why you don’t attach your extensions first, then curl?

    • Cara says:

Good question! One reason is that I curl them once and it lasts at least 3 uses the second is that it usually gives me more volume with they are curled separately and third is because I don’t like to play with them too much once they are in because I feel like it loosens the clips grasp and makes them feel unstable.. ALTHOUGH, some people might disagree, I think if I had thinner or shorter hair I might do them together so they looked more natural and blended better…sorry that was a mouthful!

      • Brittany says:

Cara, I’ll have to try your technique! I use clip-ins all the time but I usually put them in first and then curl. But the curl does only last for the one day and the next time I use then I have to re-curl again. I noticed you said your hair is thick. My is too but not quite as long as yours…with the extensions you recommend on Amazon, do you feel they are thick enough for your hair? I’m not sure if I would need extensions that weigh more then 100g since my hair is a bit shorter. Thanks! Your blog is great and I absolutely love HACing!!

  16. Camille says:

I LOOVE the photo tutorial. I’ve been following your blog for months because I am just awful at makeup and love how you break it down. Unfortunately, I read alot of your blog at work and am usually unable to watch the videos so this photo tutorial is money!

  17. Lindsay says:

Love this idea but would like a short video with it!! You’re the best!!

  18. Kaitlin says:

I absolutely adore your blog, Cara! I’m so excited to try this one! I do like the picture tutorials for a quick glance, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos! You always explain things so well and it helps me to see a continuous flow of what you’re doing. And for me, I need all the help I can get! Your videos just brighten my day! Thanks for all you do!

  19. Megan says:

Thank you for posting!! SUPER easy to follow.

****As far as clip ins go I’ve been using them for YEARS. The best way to do it I’ve found is to brush them out individually so there are no tangles – then clip in hair line starting at the nape of your neck with the shortest weft and working your way up. Once in brush your hair into your clip-ins and curl from there. It’s the most natural way of styling extensions so they don’t look noticeable! . ****

  20. Ary says:

Love it! Now lets just see how it works on short hair. What size curling iron do you recomend for shoulder lenght hair?

  21. Stephanie says:

I love all of your tutorials! The pictures were easy to follow and I can’t wait to try, but I actually miss the videos. I hope that’s okay to say. Ill still love and follow your blog either way:).

  22. Kim says:

I love your blog. Wanted to mention another good hairspray is by Nexxus and it’s called Comb Thru

  23. Andrea says:

Hi Cara! I was just curious if the link to the hair extensions are the same exactones that you use?

I purchased some about a year ago from a different site and it claimed they were 100% human hair but they do NOT curl! It just seems like it burns the extension when I attempt to curl them.

BTW-I LOVE the photo tutorial, super easy to follow!

  24. Katie says:

REALLY like photo tutorials so I can read it at work can’t get on youtube here so I don’t usually go home and watch video tutorials

  25. LaLa says:

I LOVE your blog. You’ve done an amazing job! You make it look so easy to do =)

  26. Catherine says:

Ah, why are you so perfect?! I just love your blog to pieces! Xo

  27. Mistorm says:

Your tutorials are awesome!!! Please keep them coming. I have a question though, how so I bring out my green eyes with make up?

  28. Meredith says:

Hi Cara! I was just wondering if the extensions you use are the same ones from the link you provided? I’m thinking about ordering them bc the price is amazing but they have mixed reviews.

Ps. Love your site!! Big fan

  29. stacey says:

I was also wondering if that link was for the ones you actually use. I bought some blond ones about 4 years ago and I LOVE them and use them all the time, and they are still in perfect condition. They were from Sally’s and about $125. They said REMY on the outside of them and are 100% real human hair. I recently dyed my hair brown and was planning on purchasing a brown set (I switch back and forth between hair colors often and don’t want to ruin the blonde set by dying it), and the price is now about $150 for the same ones I bought before. I clicked on your link and by the pictures it looks very similar to the ones I have (although hard to tell since it doesn’t show any packaging) and I am wondering if they are just as good, because I would obvs rather pay $35 than $150!

  30. Megan says:

Hey cara, i just wanted to let you know, i used this tutorial for the way i wore my hair the day i got married. 32. Kristal says:

  33. Angela says:

Question – do you start with wet hair or did you blow dry first?
Also how long did you hold the curler in? I can never to keep it in long enough for my curls to last.
