Mommy Makeup

Between the juice box spills, early morning and all night wake ups and the days biggest event  being a trip to the grocery store…it’s temping to just throw on some mom jeans and give up on the whole sexy thing.

Who has time for an hour primp session when you can barely convince your children to allow you a peaceful potty break?

The problem is, you can’t give up. Even if you want to.
Why? You ask.
Because you PROMISED yourself you would NEVER DO THAT.  And listen, you wouldn’t hold you to it but, it’s not the first time you’ve let younger you down.  That minivan didn’t buy itself, Europe is still waiting for you to show up on that back packing trip and your kids eat sugar regularly…often before lunchtime.
You can’t let past you down again!
She got you through MIDDLE SCHOOL for heaven sake!
She deserves more than that.

and I’m not saying you need go all “Stacy’s Mom” hot or anything but you’ll feel better and you’ll be doing you junior proud if you take FIVE MINUTES (or actually 4 minutes) to spiff up your face like this:

OH, and for all of you who wanted the pregnancy glow makeup, this mommy tutorial double for that as well!

I used the Ultimate Makeup Kit, specifically:

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Million Lashes Mascara
L’Oreal Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner
Maybelline Bouncy Blush in Fresh Pink
Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer in Nude
LORAC PRO Palette 0.08 oz
CoverGirl Perfect Blend Eye Pencil in Mink
Colour Riche Legloss in Baby Blossom
Rimmel Natural Bronzer Sun Bronze

and we’ll talk about getting out of those mom jeans tomorrow…

Did you already have foundation on?

    • Misty says:

      I was wondering that also!

      • Cara says:

No foundation for this, I know everyone has different needs with that but I find with the bronzer and the highlighting concealer I usually get enough coverage and evening of my skin tone that I don’t need foundation as well! I suggest everyone give it a try even if they think going without foundation sound CRAZY! you might be shocked. (you’ll want to cover any loud blemishes with some concealer…)

        • Jillian says:

This might be dumb…but how come u applied the concealer after the bronzer and blush? Just curious.

          • Cara says:

not dumb at all most people do it first. I think it finishes everything to look flawless and it adds a glow that you don’t get if you use it first. Plus, it helps clean up any shadow you may have dusted down when you did your eyes. Although, When I conceal to cover zits I do it after my foundation but before bronzer and blush

      • carmela says:

What if your face isnt defined like yours…Like my face is rounder so how would I do my check bone area that you do in your video?

  2. Jessica says:

Love! I stay at home with my babies and most days I feel like whats the point, this has definitely inspired me to take 5 mins out of my day to do something that makes me feel good about myself!

  3. Tammy says:

    Amazing as always!

  4. Candy says:

Thanks for taking the time to make this video! Do you have any tips on how to make eyes bigger and lashes fuller? (My lashes are always flat no matter how much I curl them and my lashes are short and not very full)

    • Camille VO. says:

Mine are the same way! They stay flat even when I curl them, help!

      • Christie says:

I hope Cara has some suggestions for this! I was at Nordstrom the other day and basically attacked the girl who checked me out because her lashes looked great. She recommended using Dior Maximizer Lash Primer and I LOVE it! I don’t even curl my lashes anymore and somewhere, they looked curled with this product…just wanted to pass it along.

        • Cristina says:

My lashes are flat. But I curl them and the only way they stay curled is with waterproof mascara. I don’t like it too much because its a hassle to take it off (water and soap won’t do it) but it keeps my lashes curled until water touches them. Any brand of waterproof mascara works.

          • Cara says:

Girls, blast your lash curler on high heat with your blow dryer for 10 seconds… Touch to make sure it’s not too hot, then curl. For bang up lashes like I’m addicted to, use two coats of Diorshow Blackout mascara, then a coat of Lancôme hypnose drama. Most importantly, let lashes dry in between coats. Lashes will look false, guaranteed. Been doing this for years and I have the lamest natural lashes. People constantly stop and tell me my lashes look amazing! Thought I’d share ❤

Cute post today. Love that mom jeans snl!!

  6. Camille VO. says:

If I have darker skin, like an olive color, what would be a good illuminator concealer color? I haven’t ever done that when doing my makeup but I love the way it looks on you!

  7. Allison says:

This post is to true. A 5 minute face is very doable for me, and I feel a gazillion times better, more myself, and more confident once I’ve done that. If nothing else, it feels wonderful thinking I don’t look as exhausted and pimply as I actually am! My kit is a little different, but are basically different versions of the same things. Thanks for posting! I recently found your blog through Pinterest, and I love it.

  8. monica says:

    What foundation did you use?

    • Cara says:

No foundation for this, I know everyone has different needs with that but I find with the bronzer and the highlighting concealer I usually get enough coverage and evening of my skin tone that I don’t need foundation as well! • Sarah says:

I’ve always had a strict “concealer-foundation-then everything else” type person…but you’re inspiring me to go without and just try the bronzer+highlighter route! I can’t wait to try it!

  9. Kassy Stuart says:

I love that we can be pretty w/o always needing to look like stacy’s mom ha you crack me up! Love you stuff Cara!

  10. Joanna says:

Hi Cara! I just wanted to say thank you for all these incredible tutorials. I’ve always been decent at makeup, but I never used eyeliner because I’ve always thought it looked too dark on me.

I tried it again after watching one of your tutorials (the Megan Fox look I believe) and I was shocked at the difference it made in my face!

With your help, my eyes look so much brighter, and my husband tells me regularly how good it looks. With a 3 year old, 2 year old, and 10 month old, those 10 minutes I spend each day on makeup help me feel pretty, even when I’m covered in some foreign substance and picking mashed carrots off the floor!

  11. Debra says:

After being a makeup artist for over 15 years, I had my lightbulb moment shortly after I gave birth to my first daughter. I found I had no time to apply 13 individual items just for a basic look…. and if I needed something fast and easy but would still give professional results, then other women did too.

With Mommy Makeup I do my entire face (including foundation), from the first touch of concealer to the final touch of lipcolor, in 6 minutes or less!! Feel free to check us out!

Love this post!! I’m going to try it out tomorrow!!:-)

  13. Jess says:

Great advice on makeup and hair! I’ve been curling the wrong way this whole time! Lol

  14. Ali says:

Even having no children, I loved this one! So great for when I’m in a hurry somewhere! Thanks girl:)

  15. Kami says:

I’m kinda addicted to make-up. You’re amazing with it! Keep it up pretty woman.

  16. Bianca says:

Which Bobby Brown bronzer and shade did you use here? Can’t find the Rimmel bronzer anywhere. Also any other recommendations for bronzers in place of the Rimmel one would be great

You are amazing! Thank you so much for this blog keep it up!

    B xxxx

    • Cara says:

thank you! Are you fair or darker skin type?

    • Cara says:

Oh and the Bobbi Bronzer (which I love) is Natural Tan, but it is a bit pricey… I have some other ideas too that are cheaper but I don’t want to tell you the wrong color…hence the skin question:)

      • Bianca says:

I’d say I’m a medium mostly, more fair in winter and tan in summer pretty close to you I guess !

        Thank you so much!

        Xxx

  17. CathyB says:

Do all these suggestions apply to older (42) like me?

  18. Katie says:

Cara- you’ve totally inspired me!! I’ve been using this tutorial and feeling even better about myself lately!! I come from a long line of “no-makeup” – my sisters and mom don’t wear any and I think it’s been the time aspect. But 5 minutes letting the little one play with toys has really helped me feel better at work and at home and my husband has been complimenting me even more, and I feel more confident…I’m still adding tools to my kit, but loving all of your tips!! Thank you!

  19. Liz says:

Cara! This is amazing. I love the easy techniques and that you go back to the same products… I did this “mommy makeup” this morning (although I’m not a mommy, I just have about 5 minutes to put makeup on in the morning!) and my husband said to me before I left the house, “You put makeup on. You look pretty.” I was stunned – I wear makeup almost everyday and never get compliments like this… Thank you for demonstrating how a little can go a really long way!!! And I love your humor in the videos

  20. Sheanna says:

For the love of PETE! I’m sprinting to the Walgreens and getting concealer like RIGHT NOW! I need to find a good brow brush, too. Dangit.

  21. Melanie says:

I have never been a big makeup wearer, and now I think I am ready to take the plunge. I am 35, so I think it is about time. Does the makeup you suggest go for all skin tones?

  22. Elise says:

Your video link isn’t working for me

  23. Erica says:

Hi Cara! I love your tutorial but I’m pretty fair skinned (age 26). What kind of bronzer should I use color-wise? I just don’t want to end up with a dark face and light neck I’m getting married in July (destination wedding, so I don’t know any good makeup artitsts) and I want to do my make up similar to this. Thanks!

  24. alyssa says:

Hi. I loved the post! What type/brand of brushes did you use?

  25. Hannah Noel says:

Thanks for the great tutorial! Do you have any suggestions for someone who is incredibly fair skinned? (think blue-eyed, curly haired Irish girl) I have a hard time finding bronzer that doesn’t leave me looking incredibly orange!

  26. dana says:

    Hi Cara,

Just found your website yesterday via Pinterest and I love, love, LOVE all the info. Absorbing like a sponge! I have some brown spots on the top of my checks and some darkening around my mouth. How can I deal with that without foundation or looking crazy?

  27. Sarah says:

I just tried this out and it looks amazing. I used the products that you recommended for fair skin ladies in your HAC FAQ post (http://www.maskcara.com/maskcara/2012/12/19/faq-for-hac/ )
I couldn’t find nyx brand, so I tried Neutrogena’s healthy skin smoothing stick | treatment concealer in fair 01. And that seems to work fine.
I just found your site, and I have to say I love your posts and all the tips and tricks you provide.
Thank you for the wonderful posts!

  28. Yvonne says:

    Cara,
Thank you SO much for posting this. I used these techniques with the makeup I already have for a new years eve party and received several compliments. Which really helps because I just had my fourth baby and just don’t time for makeup. Thanks for helping me look and feel good!

  29. Heather says:

What a great tutorial. I can’t wait to try it. I have a very full face so I hope that contouring helps me. I went to Amazon to buy the Bahama Mama and at the bottom all the other products you listed are right there because other people have bought those items; so easy!

  30. I have the same question…

  31. Roxann E. says:

Hi Cara, I love all of your make-up & hair tips
I was wondering what advice you have on keeping the eyeliner on, especially on the inner lids???
I’ve used different ones but they always smudge :/
    Thanks,
    Roxann

  32. Chelsea says:

I’m a little confused because you HAC-ed here, but you didn’t seem to use your usual products for the contouring and highlighting. Seems like I remember you saying that Clinique Even Better(?) in Buttermilk was what you used for highlighting specifically because you prefer it over the Maybelline version. I purchased a more pricey creamy concealer from Sephora, but if you think Maybelline is just as good, I certainly wouldn’t mind saving a few bucks where I can!

  33. Elisa says:

Hi! I tried the 4 minute makeup routine this morning and I love it! I was probably doing too much foundation and eye shadow before. This is perfect and natural! You have a pretty awesome sense of humor too!

  34. Marisol says:

As a mom of 4, this is just perfect and amazing… I’m a wedding planner by day/dj by night so this is exactly the type of make-up I need. I like to still think of myself as somewhat hot! LOL! You’re absolutely adorable! Thanks for the blog – keep um coming!!!! <3

  35. Kristina says:

I love this look! It’s exactly how I want to wear my make up on a daily basis. Can’t wait to try it! (I went to the grocery store today but they didn’t have the concealer.)
The only thing is I’m a little hesitant to pull the trigger on the Lorac Pro. I want to, but it’s so pricey and I’m such a make up dork. Do you have know any budget shadows that are like the two in this video so I can get my feet wet? I hardly use eye shadow.
    Thanks!

  36. Summer says:

Oh my gosh, this is so great. Totally inspired me (which is definitely needed lately). I’ve just spent the last 45 browsing through all your posts–Love, Love It!

  37. Angela says:

Thank you! as a mom of two (18 month old boy and 4 month old girl) most days i don’t even try to get ready, there is always someone screaming for my attention. this is an awesome tutorial and so inspiring to get ready and look good for my husband when he gets home! trying it today!

  38. Shannon says:

In the video, you mention using Ivory Lumi, but the product link you give us for Nude Lumi. Which one should we grab?

  39. Laura Weber says:

Tried this look today. My husband commented how fresh and awake i looked!!!! Such a great everyday look. Thank you. This is what i have been searching for!
Unfortunately, in germany the dream lumi concealer thing is only available in sand or ivory. I have light-mdium olive (more light) skin. Can i use one these colors for the effect? If not, do you know of another affordable highlighter/concealer? You are awesome! You inspire me!

  40. Rachel says:

I’m still making my way through your posts, but is there a rule that eyeliner and mascara need to be worn on the lower lashes? I wear contacts and have seasonal allergies. Anytime I try, it looks like someone punched me before I even leave the house because I’m constantly rubbing my eyes. I’ve trained myself to not touch the upper lashes, but I can’t stop touching the lower ones.

    • LOL – I was freaked out that she was running that eyeliner across her lower lashes so quickly without even pulling down on them at all (the first time)! I just kept thinking, “How does she not end up with an eye-full of black gunk?!”

  41. Sherie says:

How awesome is this! I have a question on the Highlighting Concealer. In the video you said you used Ivory, and on the list it says Nude. Which is best?

  42. Jenn says:

I love that your toddler stayed occupied for 5 whole minutes!! Impressive! I’m going to try to take 5 minutes for makeup here and there, you’ve inspired me to stop using “I’m a mom” as an excuse to neglect myself. Thank you!

  43. Sadie says:

I did your 5 min makeover today, and I swear, it made me look 5 years younger. (I’m only 32, but everything helps!) my hubby came home and I could tell he noticed something was different about me. He just kept staring at me trying to figure it out but I think was too afraid to ask, lol. Thanks so much for all these awesome tips. Ps–ive also been doing your tanning help video.

  44. Tara says:

My Rainy day Saturday plans: go to Wal-Greens with my Maskcara mommy makeup list and practice today.;-)

  45. Victoria says:

Do you prefer the Bahama Mama Bronzer or the Rimmer Natural Bronzer?

  46. Elise says:

I just found your website and LOVE it, The whole HAC i tried last night changed my life…but i do have some questions for you, I have alopecia and have lost my hair, my eyelashes and my eyebrows. I have to wear a wig but am at a loss of what to do with my eyebrows. What would you do with someone that just doesn’t have any?

  47. Jamie says:

OMG. I just found your blog and I’m stunned. I’m really not that good with make up. But like Elise above, I don’t have lashes or brows and I bald spots. Unlike Elise I have trichotillomania. Any tips? I’m going to try your ideas with what I have and hope for the best!
