Hair Care 101

DISCLAIMER:
My sister is actually a genius at hair and makeup and everything beauty related. This blog would be NOTHING without her. She has always been my teacher for all of this stuff and she really is the silent blogger for every single post. She even came up with the name Maskcara. The bad hair dye hair was mostly because I wasn’t patient and she didn’t have the right products. I will track her down, make her cookies, and beg on hands and knees to get a haircut from her because she is one of the only people I know who can cut long layers without making them look like a mullet. Also she has way better hair than I’ll ever have. Just thought you guys should know the whole story:)

THANK YOU! I LOVE “Pssst” and “got to be rockin’ it” dry shampoo. I use psst on my bangs (because it’s a lighter weight and doesn’t come out powdery) I use the other on my roots. GOOD LUCK!

  3. Kristina says:

Like you I have super long dark hair but I can usually only make it 2 days before I feel like I need to shampoo again. What kind of dry shampoo do you use, ive never tried it so I dont know what brand is good. Thanks!! Love your blog by the way!

Your hair is gorgeous!!!! And I’m trying to grow mine out…so I have a question for you. I swim every morning and I just feel like I have to wash it after my swim. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do before or after my swim to keep from having to wash it?

(I’ve started using Moroccan Oil and it is amazing!!! Best thing I have ever purchased for my hair)

    • caralynee says:

Oh I am so glad you like it! It’s funny you should ask this I JUST barely went swimming and actually thought about mentioning it in the post but since it’s January I cut it out. The very best thing it to protect your hair from the chlorine altogether with a swim cap. If, for whatever reason, that isn’t a viable option I always do a nice coat of conditioner through my hair before getting in the pool, it acts as a barrier. Then get out and ONLY rinse. If you rinse thoroughly you will not need to shampoo each time. Let me know how it goes!

      • Ashley says:

I’ve also heard rinsing before you get in the pool helps…I’m certainly NO professional though! =) Cara, I LOVE this site! I find myself checking it daily now. You are BEAUTIFUL, girl! Thank you for sharing all of your secrets! <3

  5. I’ve been trying to grow my hair out for forever, but it’s gone so slow because my hair is so fine, it gets oily fast and split ends are a big issue. Dry shampoo, Moroccan Oil … check, check!

  6. Jessica says:

Oh how I wish I could embrace my natural hair texture. I have naturally crimped/frizzy hair. Think Robert Plant circa 1973. It’s horrible!

  7. Michelle says:

I love the reddish/dark color. Do you know what colors were mixed to make the color? I normally go to the beauty school, and have to go soon….

    Thanks a bunch,

I NEED to put long layers in my long hair but now you have me worried because of: “she is one of the only people I know who can cut long layers without making them look like a mullet.” Do you have anyone who you can direct me to that wont make them look like a mullet? I am desperate to find a hairdresser I love in St George. Thanks, and I LOVE LOVE your website!!

  9. Rebecca says:

Such good tips. I’m in the market to buy some Moroccan Oil; I’ve only EVER heard rave reviews about it. About how long do you leave it in for?? I’m trying to grow my hair out, but keep getting bad breaks and split ends. I used the L’oreal Everstrong leave-in conditioner which seemed to help, but I need more power

  10. kelly says:

its okay to heat style your hair often if you are using a blow drying lotion along with a flat iron spray/heat protectant spray. Those will protect your hair from getting heat damaged and they will also protect against humidity so your hair wont frizz up by going outside in the summer )

  11. Lindsie says:

hello!!! i have to tell you that i saw you in Target the other day… i wanted to come and tell you how much i LOVE your blog, but you were at one register and i was in a long line at another one. haha! seriously, you are so gorgeous! love love love your tutorials!

  12. Roxy Reyes says:

Hey Cara, I absolutely LOVE your hair texture. Do you do anything to get it to look that thick?

Also, what do you ask for when you get a haircut?

  13. StephAnie says:

Before you mentioned doing a video on ur eyelash extensions. I want but I know nothing about them

  14. Lisa says:

How much of the Morroccan Oil hair mask do you use? What is your routine when you do use it? PS- Im so glad you mentioned you try to get about 3 days out of your hair. I try to do the same and since then, my hair has GROWN and GROWN! Love your site! My sister and I are obsessed! Thanks so much!

  15. Lacey says:

A week ago I went in for my bi-annual trim. I asked for long layers to be put in my hair and I came out of the appointment with the worst she-mullet I have ever seen. I ended up having to cut off 6 inches, so thank for these tips.

Question though, I have been trying to work out every night and my hair gets reeeealllly sweaty and gross. Any suggestions to keeping it semi-clean or avoiding washing after that?

    Thanks. Your website inspires me.

  16. Jenna says:

Thank you so much for the tips I was wondering, like another reader, what shades/level of color do you use to color your hair? Beautiful color!

  17. Jenny says:

Is there a place to buy Morroccan Oil besides online? I have been searching any beauty supply store and cannot seem to locate it anywhere.

  19. Brittney says:

I just want to say thank you!! I’ve learned a lot from this website and started using the Moroccan oil. Wow I love the stuff!! And I have a tip to getting more days out of your hair without shampoo.. I wash my hair with conditioner a couple times a week and then condition, might sound crazy but the results are amazing. I only shampoo once a month.

Love this! I am currently in the process of growing my hair out again….I had long black hair to my hips, but then cut about 12 inches off after I had attempted to get the black out…..my ends were horrendous! So, now I am trying to grow it long again and keep it healthy. I have been doing the dry shampoo and washing every 2 or 3 days (my hair gets oily fast! but it’s improving as I have been doing the dry shampoo/wash routine for over a month now) I also JUST ordered my Moroccan Oil Replenishing Mask! I’m so excited for it to arrive! A few things I have heard though are: 1) the night before you wash your hair, put in a leave-in mask overnight or leave in a natural oil like organic coconut oil, then wash it out in the morning 2) fish oil supplements will help it grow and put proteins back into your hair that I have unfortunately stripped 3) biotin/gelatin/collagen supplements are good to take too

have you heard anything about these? I have been doing the coconut oil in my hair the night before I wash it, and I haven’t yet noticed much of a difference except it hydrated well that day, and I rubbed excess oil onto my knees/elbows overnight too. I have done the biotin/gelatin/collagen supplements before and noticed a BIG difference. (especially even in my nails growing faster and healthier!)

Anyway, are there any other tips you can recommend? My hair is beyond damaged, and my wedding is a year from now. I want my long hair back, but healthy!

  21. Emilee says:

question for you! Do you know where you can get the Moroccan oil restorative hair mask on the internet?

  22. Devin says:

    You look like Annalynne Mccord!

  23. Allyson says:

I’m new to your website and can I just say, WOW! You are beautiful and amazing! Thanks for all the tips! Like another reader commented, when doing my daily workouts my hair gets really sweaty! How do I get around washing my hair when it gets like that?

  24. Karis says:

My hair is in good condition but it takes forever to grow out. I play sports 7 days a week and I have to wash it every day. Do you know any good products that can make my hair grow?

  25. Heidi says:

Your hair is incredibly shiny and beautiful. Like you said, I’m going to try and embrace the texture of hair I was born with…. I have naturally curly hair and vow to take a break from the straightening iron:)

  26. Michelle Tafazoli says:

Love it all. Can you list the products you used please?

  27. sara maurer says:

Now I see. I’ve been trying to get my hairstylist to cut my layers like yours and we just can’t get it. What the hell do I tell her? Mainly it’s the face framing pieces. You’re gorge and we all wanna be like you.

    • caralynee says:

Find a stylistic who can really work with long hair and show photos! Lots of em. Oh and you’re hotter than I’ll ever be…

  28. Amber says:

Thank you for all of your advice! I love your blog. Ok, so I have heard that I shouldn’t shampoo every day, but a couple questions come up with this and I never can find the answer. Should I condition everyday, or only when I shampoo? Also, when you don’t shampoo every day, do you still get your hair wet, or do you just use a shower cap? Last question about the Moroccan Oil.. I have heard amazing things about it, but what is the best way to use it?

    Thank you!

  29. Selena says:

Hi Cara, love your site!! I live in Canada and I discovered you through Pinterest. I have dark wavy hair like you and I am getting real hair, hair extensions this week. I haven’t ever had my hair much past my shoulders so this is all new to me! What are the best products to use on hair extensions? I normally have dry hair so I only shampoo every 3 days already but I am worried that the extensions may dry out quick or not look as shiny as my real hair.

  30. Jessica Wells says:

I am looking to buy the moroccan oil restorative mask that you mentioned in your video. We have the same long dark thick hair and I too use tresemme but read some reviews online about the restorative hair mask and some were pretty negative. The hydrating moroccan mask on the other hand receive much more positive reviews. What do you think? I don’t want to spend 40 bucks on something that will make my hair greasy but I do love the smell of the moroccan oil. Any advice will be appreciated! Keep up the blog, I LOVE IT!

  31. Jessica Wells says:

Could you also tell me what the “exact” name for your paul mitchell styling cream is?

  32. Roby says:

Ok so I found your blog somehow on Pinterest and so glad I did. You are a beauty queen with lots and lots of great advice on hair and makeup. I have naturally long blonde hair and I get it bleached about 2 times a year to keep up on the regrowth look. My hair is super dry and even after a good trim my ends look horrific…. Can you please give me some tips on products that I should use to smooth it out? I end up curling it into long curls on a daily basis because I hate the look of it straight but would love to wear it straight without using hot irons etc… PLEASE HELP

  33. Megan says:

Hi love your site! Found you on pinterest and I love all your tutorials and videos. I wash my hair every three days and have done so for a very long time. I just bought a bottle of the Paul Mitchell super skinny to help with air drying in hopes that I won’t have to rely on the straightner at all the next morning.
My question for you is (well I guess questions) do you use the super skinny after the shower when your hair is still wet? Also since you wash your hair every three days or so do you put in more super skinny every day or just once after showering? Thank you for all your awesome posts!! ~ Megan

    • caralynee says:

Hi Megan! Yes I use Super Skinny when I get out of the shower. I use it again the next day but only if my hair is looking dry or frizzy! <3

  34. Kendrah says:

My hair is super oily, and if I don’t wash it daily it looks like you could fry an egg on it. Any suggestions? I’ve been trying to grow it out for a long time.

    • caralynee says:

If your hair is an oily texture the washing isn’t as harsh for it. I would recommend just finding alternatives to heat tools and blow drying if you can. How long have you been growing it out, how long is it?

      • Kendrah says:

I dyed it a couple years ago, red from blonde, and damaged it trying to change it back. I cut it chin length last October, and how its just passed my shoulders. I’ve finally cut off all the damaged part. Before I dyed it, it was to my mid-back. I’d like it to be that long or a little longer.

        • Kendrah says:

oh, so I’ve basically been trying to grow it out since I had to cut off the damaged portions starting in August of 2010, in October 2011 I cut off the last of the damaged parts.

  35. Luna says:

Love this! I’ve been growing my hair out for the first time in my life and struggling with the things you’ve mentioned so I’m really glad to hear these tips! I also love how down to earth you are while knowing alot about beauty and fashion and whatnot. Gives a ‘regular’ girl like me hopes of looking glamorous without it consuming my life like I’ve seen in many.

  36. Roxy says:

What I’ve started doing 2 years ago (has it really been that long?!) is washing my hair with cold water. Not full body shower in cold water (GOODNESS NO) but pre-shower flip my hair and wash it under the tub spout, lightly wring it, and pin it up. I have very fine hair strands that get damaged easily, and the difference seen is absolutely noticeable. I used to have a small cloud of dry frizzy roots and now are muuuuch smoother and look like the rest of my hair. Think about it, heat is heat, no matter if it comes from a curling iron or a scorching shower.
