Blogging Chats

Have you guys ever wondered things about the ins and outs of blogging as a profession? I get a lot of questions about it so I thought I’d share some answers to the ones I get most often:)

blogging

Do you ever run out of ideas on what to post?
No. I would have run out of ideas years ago if not for the readers. You are constantly giving me ideas on things you’d like to see more of and learn how to do.
Although, I do have days where I’m 100% uninspired and need a break from anything beauty related. When I was pregnant, my whole head was filled with baby thoughts and 8 months along + mid summer makeup was more or less the last thing on my mind!

Do you get a lot of free stuff?
When I began getting a lot of traffic (and mostly after I won the Allure Beauty Blogger award) I started getting sent lots of beauty products! At first it was really amazing, I was like Scrooge Mcduck swimming in skincare and body lotions! But it didn’t take long before I felt like I was becoming buried in it. My whole message is helping people use the stuff they have to it’s fullest rather than promote buying something new every day. Plus if I wouldn’t actually buy it myself I wouldn’t post about it. For instance I had a company offer to give me a $1000 stroller before Billy was born. I would have loved to have a super nice stroller but if I’m being honest I wouldn’t buy one myself so I had to turn them down and buy one in my actual price range.

How do you keep up with all of the questions and comments?
I don’t. I just do my best! For a long time I was so frustrated that I couldn’t get to them all that I wouldn’t even try. I just dug my head in the sand. Which didn’t help AT ALL I just ended up feeling guilty constantly. I decided I would just do what I could when I could. So now I have it much better handled and since I know I’m doing my best (while still being a mom & a business owner) then I don’t feel as guilty when I miss some:)

How do you make money off your blog?
Most of you probably know this but I still get asked all the time. There’s a few different ways I am able to make an income here:

#1 Ads As you can see there are a few ads on the site. Just like commercials…but way less money:)
#2 Affiliate links. So basically Everything in the universe has affiliate link opportunities these days, meaning I get a little referral percentage if you click on my link to get something I recommend.
#3 Sponsorships. Although, In the 5 years that I’ve had this blog I’ve probably done less than a dozen sponsored posts. One of the most important things to me when I began was to always be %100 honest and genuine and never driven by money but by the ability to help women feel more beautiful. That being said it’s obviously wonderful if you can do that and make money but it only works out that way for me about 1 in 1000 of the sponsored posts I’ve been offered.
#4 My Makeup Line. Now that I own a business I’ve been able to use the blog to share about it with you, my readers. I know for sure I wouldn’t have been able to start my line when I did and it wouldn’t have seen this amazing success without you all:) I’m so incredibly grateful, thank you!

Do any of you that have blogs have an questions you get asked a lot?

I admire your determination to only share about products you will use yourself, it must have been challenging to reject that $1000 stroller! Thanks for sharing your answers about blogging, it’s very interesting!

Thank you for being honest and staying true to yourself. I hate it when I see bloggers using/promoting super pricey products, I always think, “did she/he actually purchase that or were they given it for free?” Thank you for being transparent and loyal to your readers. <3 you!

I think one of the reasons I do is because I too follow blogs and feel bummed out when they post about something and I can’t tell if they’d have actually purchased it on their own! Glad it keeps my on my toes:) Thanks so much!

The reason I keep coming back (besides loving your content and your personality) is that you haven’t “sold out” like seemingly all the other bloggers have. I love that you’re not shoving sponsored posts down our throats! Keep it up!

My blog has pretty low traffic still so I don’t get blogging questions. But just wanted to say that I love how clear your vision is! You mention it constantly how you just want to make women feel more beautiful. I think it’s so important to have a clear vision. My blog is about running but I think my purpose in the blogging world is to make distance running seem attainable and even fun for non-runners. Obviously since I’m here at your blog, I love skincare and beauty, so I may add that element into my blog somehow. I have really been learning a lot from you recently!

I love that!!! I agree having a clear vision is so important! It keeps you from getting lost in the sea of blogging trends and losing your own voice:)

I can only agree with all the comments before me. Being open and honest about things you’ve received (or not) and recommending products you yourself would buy/use is a big plus… It’s awful how often bloggers will have a different “favorite xx product” each week or month, simply because they got it for free and were paid to post about it.

Along with everyone else, I really appreciate how genuine you are. I feel like so many blogs make me feel like all they do is shop and spend money, and then they make me feel like I need to do the same to keep up. I love the ‘Makeup capsule’ because it is obtainable by mere mortal non-bloggers. And I can’t believe you turned down a $1000 stroller. You are so cool. That is some serious sticking to your guns. Seriously my respect for you just went through the roof.

agreed with the other ladies here; what draws me to your blog the strongest is not the content but the atmosphere — you are genuine, your personality shines through your writing – reading feels like a conversation with the nicest person in the world! Thank you for being upfront and transparent on this front – sponsorship’s, affiliate links, etc. can be a touchy subject in the current blogging world.

I love that you are so real! I always get so bummed when I see bloggers I like promote ridiculous products that really don’t represent how they were when they first started blogging. The stroller example is a great example!

Ahhh, thanks so much for your honesty. As a fan of yours for a few years, and a total new blogger, I’m often feeling like a freshman in high school – looking around to the cool girls that came before me, trying to find great new friends online, and looking for continued inspiration on the struggles that come along with it. Growing a blog isn’t easy at all. Staying true to your core ideals isn’t either, and neither is passing on a Maserati stroller! LOL. Kudos for keeping it real. Cheers!

Oh man! It can be so intimidating! Sometimes when I get feeling overwhelmed I take a break from looking at other blogs. Just because you can start thinking you need to be more like them or you’ll never keep up and all that silly stuff! It isn’t easy but I’m glad you’re doing it! It’s such a rewarding thing to persue! Do you have a link to yours?

Hi Cara. I really enjoyed this post. I have a question…how do you have so many amazing photos for every post: especially those of yourself that are clearly not selfies. Do you have a photographer you use? Or do you set up a tripod or something else?

I don’t really buy that you’re always honest. You took a “break” from your blog recently and didn’t post for a week. You said you needed to step away so your content was fresh, but failed to mention you were also out of town at a resort for your husband’s golf tournament. I’m sure that was a nice way to put it for your readers.

Me and the boys actually tag along with Nick to his tournaments most of the summer! While it is difficult to maintain the blog while travelling and being with the boys all day so my husband can work I stay up super late to get the posts done. I want to support his dreams like he always has done mine. That particular week I didn’t blog for the reasons I expressed. You probably didn’t know that because I don’t share much all of the details about our day to day life on the blog. I don’t think that’s dishonest it’s mostly just because we’re an everyday family and it would be quite boring to read about in my opinion and not what I intended this blog for. When we have gone on a fun vacation though, I do share about it and none of my readers have ever voiced an issue that I take time off to do something fun!

Sara , you are one of the most rudest people I have ever read a comment from on any Blog ! Cara did not tell us that she was being a mini Mother Theresa in India for one week when she was actually at some resort !!! what the heck ! She said she took a break ….what she does during her break is HER business . She was not lying nor misleading us . I read Maskcara and have followed Cara for years and support her business by using her products ( IIID ) . I noticed she took a break for one week as well and when she returned her content was fresh and more lively which happens to any of us who take a momentary pause in life .
May I suggest that you also take a break and refresh yourself so that you may come back to Maskcara ( which has always been real and uplifting ) in a better mood .

Cara, I love how honest and true to yourself you are! After struggling with infertility for two years, I decided to start a blog and share my story and how my faith is helping my husband and I through this hard “waiting time” in our life, with the hope of connecting with and inspiring other women in similar situations. I’m still brand-new at blogging and trying to decide if I want to try to monetize my blog (since obviously having a well-designed blog and self-hosted domain is not free) without selling my soul! I don’t want my blog to turn into a commercial but it would be nice to have some type of income from it to help maintain the cost of running a blog. I think you have found a really good balance with your blog. I appreciate that you only promote products that you would buy yourself and that you keep the ads to a minimum. I admire the way you share goodness and inspire women while celebrating inner and outer beauty, and I think there’s nothing wrong with the way you’ve been able to support your family while doing all that. Keep it up!

Cara, thank you for your willingness to put yourself ‘out there’!! There will ALWAYS be those people that you will NEVER please…no matter what! And, I’m sure that bugs you (I’ve followed you for a few of years and I feel like I know you!!)–quite frankly this is why I could never blog! However, I love your courage and I love that you are always honest and genuine with your readers. You definitely stand out by leaps and bounds over others, Cara! Let the darts roll off your ‘shield’ and know you are very loved and appreciated by many, many people!

I have been fighting with the affiliate link thing for a long time. I feel like if I am “making money” on anything at all, in any form, that I am somehow being dishonest, even if it’s disclaimed. I can’t bring myself to do it. I have never been sent anything to review, ever. I got two “thank you” gifts, after companies saw their items mentioned on my blog, though, both are small companies, that have very little online discussion, and were stunned to see any press online. I still feel a little awkward that they sent me anything, even as a thank you for the exposure.
