Beauty Basics Skin Skin Products

The Cure.

I’m not talking about the band.

And I’m not talking about that really cute movie that came out in the 90’s.

I’m talking about the most amazing thing that has happened to my dead skin cells since…ever.

OK so a little back story here.
As a makeup artist who gets her hands on hundreds of faces the biggest concerns I have are with skin. So often it’s dehydrated and in need of exfoliation. I’m ALWAYS singing the praises of having a good moisturizer and using it religiously and also not stripping your skin in the first place to cover the whole moisture thing but I’ve been stressing about a good recommendation for the exfoliation part.
I recommended a PMD machine but the price isn’t very wallet friendly and it’s a little harsh.
Aside from that I really hadn’t had anything that wowed me in the dead skin department.

Until my girl Missy sent me this exfoliating “aqua gel“:

She always sends me her new favorite things that she’s selling at her Pop-up shop but this one had a note on it that it was her favorite of the favorites. Which peaked my interest. I went right in the bathroom and tried it and OH MY HEAVENS TO BETSEYS.

Words that I have used to describe it so far:
A miracle. Crazy. Life Altering. Weird. Incredible. Gross. Voodoo.

And listen, I usually take weeks or even months of vetting a skincare product before sharing it but this time after just a couple of weeks I felt like I was sitting on a gold mine and I couldn’t take one more minute without telling you guys about it. In fact, I’m pretty disappointed in those of you who already knew about it and didn’t tell me. Doesn’t our friendship mean anything to you!?

It completely removes my dead skin and it isn’t one bit painful or rough on the skin. You just apply it to the surface of the skin. Wait a couple minutes. Then Rub your skin in circular motions. You will start to feel your removed skin under your fingers. Rinse thoroughly. Be floored over how clear and smooth your skin is.

(yes, I even do my mirror face while washing it. The dorkiest.)

If you don’t believe me just look at all these amazon reviewers. ( you might see a comment that says it isn’t actually your dead skin you feel as you are rubbing your face but I did test this with a latex glove as the reviewer says and no it did not ball up at all. Not to mention it balls up much less each time I use it and regardless one way or another it’s exfoliating my skin. I know how that feels:)

I’m so thrilled to finally have an answer for getting a good exfoliation. Use 1-3 times a week depending on your needs and don’t forget to follow with a good moisturizer!

    Hi Cara,
Can you clarify your review. In your comments regarding the glove you state that when using one it did not ball up at all, wouldn’t that mean that it is not exfoliating your face but rather your fingers (or dirt from) when using it with bare hands?
    Thanks so much!

      May 13, 2015 at 8:55 am

I’m pretty sure she means she rubbed it on a glove with her fingers and it didn’t ball up from the glove. She isn’t wearing the gloves and then rubbing on her face. There are a lot of reviews about products like this saying that they are glue based and that is why it balls up. They think it isn’t actually skin, but glue balling up. This was to test that. If it was just glue, it would ball up on a glove but since it didn’t then it probably is skin that is balling up on the face.

No I used a glove and rubbed it together with my fingers, so the product was only touching latex. Does that make sense?

I was wondering that too! I actually bought this about as year ago, and like it, but asked the same question on the Amazon project page, but never got an answer 🙁 I can’t really see the ingredients. I’m pregnant and have used it on just my nose once I think, and figured that shouldn’t be too bad. I assumed it was some type of glycolic/alhpa hydroxy acid, or beta hydroxy acid? If so, I think most sources say those are OK in low concentrations. But I’m not for sure of course!

        May 14, 2015 at 8:44 am

Glad I’m not the only one wondering! From what I’ve read. Alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid are all safe in pregnancy. Beta hydroxy acid (BHA) however, should be avoided. I’m looking forward to purchasing this product if only someone could help us out!

I recently got roped in by one of those mall kiosk people who demonstrated aqua gel exfoliator (not sure what brand–something with middle-eastern/asian origins) on the underside of my arm. I am a die hard skeptic and not a product person (I’m one of those people who thinks vinegar or jojoba oil does everything…from my sinks or floors to my face), but aqua gel exfoliator was INCREDIBLE. I didn’t buy it from the man for “$149 and a free gift only for you, only today” but vowed to find it online. I am beyond excited that you posted this!!!!!! Thank you!!!!

Thank, Liz! I’ve just commented on Kimberly’s post about this product but I made a mistake with the name. It’s Baby Foot, not Pretty Foot. And you are so right about this product. It is amazing stuff!!! You just need to remember soak your feet in water everyday after the initial application to get the maximum peeling. My feet just finished sloughing off after a week and it has never been smoother. Thank you so much for sharing!
And thank you Cara for mentioning the Cure! It is exactly as you said. This product is fantastic, the best exfoliator ever! These two products have changed my life. I feel as if I’ve been to a spa after using them.

Dr dennis gross acne eliminating pads. They make you regret using them for 20 seconds because your skin tingles something awful, but girl, they work. After using, immediately put a moisturizer (i use them at night after washing my face and use First Aid Beauty radiance overnight mask moisturizer) Go to Sephora and get two pads to sample. Cut them in half and use them for for days and YOU WILL see a difference! While you are there, ask for a sample of the moisturizer! 🙂

Talking about “balling up” reminds me of when ladies on a this beauty board used to use Miracle Whip on their face, which they said caused the dead skin they had on their faces and hands to “ball up”. They were doing this to get rid of acne and smooth their skin. Most of the users spoke of positive results. I never tried it myself, but was always curious about it. A very strange thing to do, but interesting! Anywho, thank you Cara for this fabulous recommendation! I need to try this. Trust me, if I had known about this I definitely would have told you about it! 🙂

I’m going to have to try this! After reading a while ago that the walnut shell scrubs leave “microtears” in your skin and that microbeads are super bad for the environment, I settled for this super gentle scrub that is okay, but definitely doesn’t leave me feeling verye exfoliated. This sounds amazing and doesn’t sound like it would hurt your skin or the earth!

I haven’t opened it yet (since it’s not my birthday) haha and would love to know your preference before diving in! If you like something that is cheaper better, then I would rather use the money towards something else! If you like the PMD more, that’s great too. I want the best bang for the buck for sure! Please let me know which one you think gives better results. Thanks!! 🙂

I don’t know much, but I do know this. I have the PMD & I used it pretty hardcore on Saturday evening. Then last night (Monday) I used this Aqua Gel that Cara recommended and I could.not.believe how much skin came off my face! And I feel super confident that it was all skin because my serum & lotion that I put on my face every night usually just sits there all kind of greasy and I’m always like, “Look how great this night cream is! It’s so full of moisture that my skin can’t even absorb it all!” But last night, after using the Aqua Gel, my skin was so exfoliated that it soaked all my lotions & potions up in like 4 seconds flat. I ended up putting 3 (!!) layers of retinol and night cream on my forehead because it could simply take more and I figured, well, load up, baby. This morning my skin looked noticeably better. Like, NOTICEABLY. I came to work and pretty much immediately sat my office-mate down to tell her all about it, haha.

      Great recommendation, Cara!

So years ago my mom read about this, my sister and I thought she was crazy until we tried it for ourselves. Miracle Whip. If you take a dollop of Miracle Whip and rub it all over your face for a bit the dead skin cells will start to roll off. It takes a few minutes, so give it time. Just be sure to use the regular, not low-fat or anything else. Your face will be oily afterwards, obviously. Just something else to try especially if you’re on a tight budget.
