Eyeliner School: The soft wing

99 times out of 100 when I’m doing my makeup in the morning the last thing I want to do is struggle with a winged liner. Its just so much work and so easy to mess up! Unless you use a trick.

This is a way to get a really soft and sweet wing that is also VERY forgiving is to use eyeshadow instead of eyeliner! (Which made it hard to decide on whether to call this eyeliner or eye shadow school!)

Dip the small end of the brush into a dark (or bright come to think of it) eye shadow and start your wing at the outer 3rd of your eye drawing toward the end of your brow.
You can leave it like that or if you’d like to have a lower line as well start it softly beneath your pupil and draw to meet up with the top wing.

Pretty simple eh?

Happy Hump day!

Do you have any suggestions on how to do this for someone who has hooded lids and the skin folds in the corner of the eye right where the “wing” should go? I have tried a winged liner so many times, but when I open my eye, the wing disappears under the fold. Thanks!

I have the same problem! And my eyes turn down at the corners, swallowing the wing further.

I like to do a bright liner under the eye since I can’t do wings.

This lady is super sweet and helpful! Her videos are long but give good info! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXCQOWc7TGQ I personally like the one where you place a dot where you want the liner to end then draw a line from that to your lashes… that will make more sense if you watch her video 🙂
There are TONS of videos on Youtube for hooded eyes. Of course some are more helpful than others.

Hi Cara! When you use this method do you leave your eyelid relaxed or pull it taut?

Many times when I do a lower liner with eyeshadow, it tends to disappear throughout the day or smudge (come to think of it, my eyeliner often does too), especially during warmer months. Is there a way to avoid this/any tips or tricks? (I use urban decay primer before.)

I often use shadow to line. I find it helpful to dip my brush is an setting spray first (ELF and NYX are affordable and good quality) , this helps prevent fall out when applying, and that line won’t budge all day!

I’m rubbish when it comes to eyeliner — I just can’t get the hang of it! I’ll definitely have to try this! It looks so good. I love that it’s obvious, but soft so it’s definitely more wearable. Thanks for this tip, Cara!

I love this! This is a great idea especially for mornings when you’re in a rush.
I often wear winged eyeliner but use liquid eyeliner and some days my hand just isn’t steady enough. But than you for this trick because I’ll definitely be using this from now on!
