Makeup Tips & Tricks

Introducing TIP TUESDAY!

I make lists of beauty things I want to post about ALL THE TIME… but since they seem sort of small and not totally “post worthy” they end up sitting on the back burner waiting for an “appropriate” post which sometimes never happens and usually even when it does, it ends up getting lost in the shuffle. Which is why tip Tuesday was born! A home for misfit beauty tips.
I’m pretty excited about it, actually. (Christian adds “actually” to the end of everything lately “I want juice…actually.” “I think I’ll wear my Spiderman jammers…actually.” I love it.)

Anyway, while rummaging through my sister Randi’s makeup collection yesterday I practically yelped when I stumbled on this drugstore eyeshadow and realized the color was a perfect doppelgänger for MAC Brun. A dupe I’ve been searching for for ages.

Cause look, even if you don’t mind paying the extra dollar bills for the real thing, if you’re anything like me you consider trips into the MAC store to be a necessary evil. Where you’re going to probably feel intimidated and like you don’t belong…not unlike trips into Abercrombie.
Because when I walk into Sephora I hear angels sing and I feel so completely at home and free to be me but when I walk into MAC I just start wondering if I have something in my teeth. I don’t know what it is cause all of the MAC girls I have been able to get to know are perfectly wonderful people…it’s the just vibe in there. Or me, maybe. Anyway, there are many reasons why you might rather hop over to Walgreens instead of the mall and now you can!
Let me introduce you to Loreal Antique Brown-

Dupe for MAC. Brun
As is the case with most dupes these two aren’t exactly the same, the Antique Brown is a teensy bit warmer as demonstrated on my arm:

left MAC Brun : right Loreal Antique Brown

Well now I’m looking at this photo I can’t tell a difference…
If you are new to the blog you probably don’t know that I use Brun daily, for filling in brows (on almost everyone it’s a chameleon color) for a perfect smokey eye and for a soft liner.
The color is a MUST HAVE and for $4.79 you cannot go wrong.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who dreads going into MAC! I’ve been filling in my brows for a while now thanks to your earlier post (although I had to try it twice before I got it – I scared the hell out of myself the first time with the scary wolf brows I created!) and, since I hate going into MAC I’ve been using Loreal’s Antique Brown instead. I love it but there has always been a little voice in the back of my mind wondering whether my brows could be just a little bit better if I was using MAC’s Brun. Now I know I’m just fine without it – phew! Thanks so much for all your posts – they always give me a smile and a little pick-me-up when I need it!

I never thought of using brown shadow for eyes and brows! I will have to try it. (I normally use a pencil, but I love things that do double duty, especially when traveling.)

I actually use that color so this is good to know! … I feel better knowing that I am not the only one that feels intimidated at MAC. I feel so judged about my hair, outfit, and of course my makeup when I go in therefore I always hit up Sephora. I haven’t missed MAC products so far.

I am also intimidated at MAC. They must try to make the vibe be like that, all exclusive or something. But it just makes me go to Sephora instead. Where the guys don’t have 4 times more makeup on than me.

God, who doesn’t love a good dupe?! Share away, Cara; I’m all ears!

PS- good dupe for MAC patisserie (note: minus the shimmer!!) is Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick in PINK IN THE AFTERNOON. Life changing… I have thin slips, so shimmery lipstick makes me look utterly insane. This is the perfect pink of patisserie without the lunacy of shimmer.

I have been using a brow/eyeliner pencil to shade in my eyebrows for YEARS, and I am ready to up my game and try this method. Cara, you are wonderful and you have taken me out of the “Brittany Spears” makeup generation!LOL. I just got my hands on your IIID kit this morning and I can’t wait to start using it. Nope, it’s not you. That’s definitely the vibe in a Mac store! But at 61, I love to go in there, look at products and watch them try to be nice while obviously wishing they could be helping a younger shopper who would probably buy a lot more than I will. I feel I’m giving them an opportunity to practice their somewhat lacking customer service skills. 😉 Plus, I use their Smut shadow for eye liner and it’s only available in the stand-alone stores.

The Mac I’ve been too always seem nicer to older women. For some reason they ignore me and I am mid 30s. I figured they think I will buy less. Guess they just try to put off an exclusive vibe. Too bad no one feels included!

I feel intimidated too because I am also a sixty something! I think it is all me and not at all them but if you haven’t been our age you don’t know what the differences are right? I wish more cosmetics counters employed older gals.

Don’t feel intimidated, Suzi. I figure my dollar is the same as a younger person’s dollar. I actually like it when they ask if they can help, then leave me alone while I peruse the products. I can then choose what I want/like, not what they think I should be wearing. ( I shudder to think how I would look if I went with their recommendations – “old-lady-goth”!)Their products really are great and I’ve decided the bad vibe is worth it if I truly love the product.

Now that I’m looking at the colors up close, I’m curious if what I use is also a dupe? I use the darker brown in the Benefit brow zing dark kit to fill in brows and it’s my favorite thing to use as a liner as well. Thanks for the post! I hate the Mac attitude too!

Hey Cara- because you do use Brun so much, and now with the equivalent I certainly will too, maybe it would be helpful to have a Brun category so we can see all of your looks using the one color so we know how to be as versatile as you. Just a thought! My 5 year old follows everything with “of course”. I have a feeling in 10 years it may sting more that it is endearing but I love it! That and, “perhaps”.

Awesome tip! I feel the same way when I go to the Mac stores… but one thing that keeps me going back is that they have awesome products with the largest variety of high pigmented colors out of any other brands. They also recycle your empties and if you bring in 6 empties to a Mac counter in Macys you can get a free lipstick or a Mac store for free eyeshadow. Only the best things in life are free… well, sometimes free 😉

I did use it for brows and it worked great, it isn’t quite as pigmented as the MAC shadow but I actually think that can be good when doing brows so that they go on more natural looking. The dryer consistencies are good for staying put as well!

I have definitely felt that MAC “mean girl” vibe before. That’s why I buy my MAC makeup through Nordstrom…. free shipping and free returns on all purchases! I questioned whether getting the Brun eyeshadow was worth the price but I use it on my brows every single day and it lasts forever! Love it! Good to know there is a cheaper alternative out there, though!

I also found a great dupe for MAC’s brun that I always use on my brows! It’s from Maybelline’s “Natural Smokes” quad, and it’s the matte dark brown liner color at the bottom. You get a brow color and also a pretty decent eyeshadow quad! And I also get that feeling when I go to MAC stores!

I love MAC’s makeup just like the next girl… I have never felt intimidated there though, but I have felt irritated. For probably the last 10 times I have visited (no joke), I have politely waited my turn to be helped and have had to practically scream to get attention after several newcomers have been assisted before me. I wear a decent amount of makeup, too, so I can’t imagine why they aren’t excited to sell to someone like me. Oh well. I actually stopped wearing MAC because of that. There are too many good brands out there to settle for something I dread! I used to love Sephora, too, but I went a week ago and it just seems like so much has changed (mostly inventory-wise). I felt stalked there, too. The employees kept following me around and asking if I needed help. It made me feel pressured like I needed to get out or they were going to think I was stealing or something. I’ve just started ordering online now!

    Thanks for the tip!

Great idea, Cara and thanks! I can still see a slight difference between these two – you’re right, the Antique Brown is slightly warmer – but I’ve only ever stepped foot into a MAC store once in my life, and that’s because they had a Hello Kitty theme going there for a while (and I still have their little Hello Kitty lipstick case, which I never use…hmmm….). Otherwise, I’m a L’Oreal via Walgreen’s freak. 🙂

Ashley, I was looking for a dupe for Omega too, although I want it to use as a contour powder (for times I’m wearing mineral/powder makeup). I’ve seen the lighter shade in the Maybelline Browntones eye duo recommended as a very good Omega dupe, so I’m going to give it a try tomorrow, along with Maybelline Natural Smokes for the Brun dupe for my brows. I’m cursed with very pale skin and black, but uneven/patchy eyebrows. Hard to find a good brow filler that works!

I was messing around the other day and decided to fill in my brows at night before I took my make up off. I’m not sure if it was because of the color, I used Sultry from the Nude “Tude palette or the fact that I’ve never done it before…but I looked really stupid and ridiculous. I’m not sure if I like the whole “fill in the brows” thing… 🙁

I’d love to try it, but am I mistaken or is this being discontinued?

I love MAC, but the store totally weirds me out, and they wear so much makeup. Glad I’m not the only one.

Can’t wait to try it! I have a hard time filling in my brows where a little part doesn’t grow (over plucking accident in junior high 🙁 ) What type of brush do you recommend and do you have tutorial on filling in brows, esp where you need to add a little.

I’m almost positive this color is being discontinued. It’s on clearance in Harmons & Walmart.

Great Tuesday “tip.” I actually (pun intended) went to Nordstroms this weekend and bought the Mac Brun …like others, I didn’t want to go to the Mac store. I had tried what I thought was everything on my thinning brows. When I saw how dark it was I almost didn’t buy it. I’ve had to go lighter with my hair to keep the skunk-stripe at bay (and to save $). But I took the plunge, and you are SO RIGHT. It is perfect. Doesn’t end up all over my face. Doesn’t look fake. I tried it for eyeliner too … Just great. You truly are an artist. Your MIL is gorgeous BTW!

For someone with a more reddish or auburn colored hair, like myself, the deep mocha by Loreal also works wonders! Walmart didn’t carry this shade so I thought I would try deep mocha and it’s perfect. My Anastasia brow powder is a thing of the past!

Does anyone have a good drug store color for a red head? I am very fair skin with medium coppery red hair, golden brown eyes and brown eyebrows.

one of the colors (the darker one) in the NYX brunette eyebrow cake powder kit its also a good dupe for mac’s brun, its just a little bit warmer like the loreal one.

Oh, thank you so much for posting this! Brun was on my want list but I put it off because of the cost + shipping. I bought the Loreal one a few days ago and it works great!

Can’t find this particular color anywhere, but did find what looks to be the same called deep mocha. Would they have changed the name?
