Awesome skin secret/Last minute gift idea

Since most of you probably don’t know, because you are full functioning adults, I’ll tell you what Walmart looks like on Christmas eve.
You know those zombie movies where everyone panics and ambushes the grocery stores leaving empty aisles, floors full of debris and random cans of green beans here and there?
Well, that’s basically it but also with a bunch of dudes walking around looking lost and totally busted. They’ve saved their Christmas shopping till now and now isn’t looking to hot which means tomorrow isn’t going to be much better.
The sad thing is, I’m usually one of them. No matter how many Christmases I live through I always forget how terrible this plan is until I’m standing there rationalizing that green beans are actually very thoughtful gifts.
SO maybe you’re not as bad as me but perhaps you still have some friends on your list you haven’t shopped for yet.
Well, guess what!? I’m gonna hook you up with an idea!
I’ve talked recently about this lemon scrub that is SO refreshing and makes your skin look and feel wonderful! Well I thought it would be really cute to jar up some sugar and lemons and add this little recipe:

Quick. Inexpensive. Thoughtful.
The holy trifecta of last minute gift giving.
Be sure to caution to test a small patch of skin first and to use sunscreen after.
Some of the comments below were cautionary and should be considered!

I hope you guys have a fun weekend, I’m glad I wrote this post because I think this might be one of the years in which I use a little foresight and get my shopping done in time.
But maybe not since we were ROBBED of an entire week of Christmasing this year!
Does anyone know why that happened?

I’m doing this once a week for years! it brightens, exfoliates and moisturizes too. I call it sugar-lemon trick!

Hi Cara! For some reason, none of the pictures or videos are showing up on your website. Any ideas on why that is happening?

I had that issue for a while, but I assumed it was my work computer. It’s now showing up like normal.

I have to SERIOUSLY caution fair skinned people that you should only do this at night and rinse well, even at that if you are going into the sun the following day it is risky. I got deep second degree burns from using citrus in food recipe and then going in the sun, even after I had cleaned my hands really well. It was some of the most excruciating pain of my life and took forever to heal, still leaving scars. Here is a link to someone’s similar story w photos.

Not to be contrary or negative at all I love your blog and makeup! It was just so painful I am always horrified when I see all these citrus face things on Pinterest. I wouldn’t wish that experience on my worst enemy!

I agree, time has been too cruel this year taking away a whole week like that. Shame on you, Thanksgiving! I can’t believe we only have five days left. Eeek!

Can you use lemon juice from a bottle or does it have to be fresh?

Being an Esthetician, I have to say this post can be dangerous. Lemon juice, the acid , is too unstable for skin. Causes the skin over time to not be able to defend itself against the sun and other factors. Yes your skin may look smooth and brighter but don’t let that fool you. This has caught on as an easy DIY treatment. No one talks about the risk. Read up on lemon juice, lemon acid.

Hi Christina, see my post above… citrus burns are also no joke. I had second degree burns on my hands, even after washing them multiple times. i just read a story about two girls playing with their neighbors citrus tree and played outside in the sun, they then ended up in the hospital on morphine drips from the pain.

I was taught to never ever put lemon on your face – dries out your skin.

I think that as long as you don’t do it every day and moisturize after, there should be no problem at all.

I am also a licensed esthetician and totally agree that lemon juice is way too aggressive on the skin, causing inflammation and potential phototoxicity, as mentioned by another person who received burns after contact with the juice. This is one of the worst things you can do to your skin.

If you do have fair or sensitive skin you can dilute the lemon juice with water, and of course always use your sunscreen!

Thanksgiving was definitely a week late this year. And guess what?! It’s the same for next year (the 27th) and the two years after that (both on the 26th!). Sigh. We’re screwed.

What do you recommend for a moisturer before you use your make=up, I find when I put it on it makes my skin look older then it is?

Another idea is to mix jojoba or almond oil with sugar and some lemongrass essential oil and pop that into a little mason or jam jar, then tape on instructions to use as a body exfoliator in the shower, rubbing in small circles. It moisturizes, exfoliates, and still has that nice bright citrus scent without the negative side effects. 🙂

if you do this, be careful around your nose. i did this earlier this week and scrubbed my nose too hard(had a lot of clogged pores i was trying to get) and took off a layer of skin from half the length of my nose. on the rest of my face though, it left it baby soft.

My mom used to wash her face and then mixed olive oil with some sugar to gently massage into her face using her finger tips. Her skin looked so good and when women asked her what she used on her skin, they didn’t believe her! I use it and it feels amazing!

Try it! I make mine more liquidy than sugary. I hope you know what I mean. You can play with the amounts.

    Good luck!

Hola Cara, Guess what? I saw you tonight, in fact you were in my living room with me. Why and how you ask? You were highlighted in Allure Magazine which I was reading in my living room, hahahahah. I want to ask you about the medium HAC set, is it available. I have one thing to give to my Self for a gift and I think I want it to be the gift of HAC. Right now I must be my own sweetheart/bestfriend/etc., in order to get what I want for Xmas. There was something else I has on my mind, yet it gone. Let me know when I can pay and you can ship. This is my gift to me. Next year I am looking to get back into a career situation and rather than return to non-profit, I think I may want to look for a position in the big wide crazy beauty business. Have any suggestions? MERRRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU, YOUR SON AND HUBBIE.

I’ve been meaning to drop a couple lines to tell you how much I love the HAC pac. To be honest, I didn’t expect it to be so awesome but it IS and I’m really getting the hang of this HAC thing. Tragically UPS didn’t deliver my IT Cosmetics brush and returned it back to ULTA so its just that much longer I have to wait for it BUT for now Ive been using my fingers and still love what I’m able to acheive with your product. Ever since I started reading your blog a couple months ago and venturing into wearing eye makeup and now HAC-ing.. I’ve received so many compliments. Im 35 and late to the game! All of your recommendations have been so helpful… I have a new arsenal of makeup, brushes, and skin care and I’m feeling more confident than ever. Thanks Cara for all you do on this blog! I’m forever a reader…
