The Unabridged Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Treatment

I’ve always had frustration with shows and magazines when they say they’re going to tell me EXACTLY how to get a look and then they pull out whatever makeup line was sponsoring them and give me a few quick tips all chopped up into a fun little music-filled minute-in-a-half blurb and expect me to feel like I could totally recreate the look now.

I mean, I think I get why they do this. I’m guessing all of their market research and their sponsor’s market research tells them our tiny human attention spans can only handle 2 minutes TOPS. And if you complicate the process with all the nitty gritty details we are going to get overwhelmed and we DEFINITELY won’t be able to handle it…

B3bWkMT

Well. I don’t do market research nor do I  have sponsors to answer to and I actually think that if my readers are overwhelmed by a post they have the skills of skimming necessary to manage it, cause they are intelligent capable women, not just numbers.  If I’m going to tell you how to get a look, I’m ACTUALLY going to tell you. Even if it’s so crazy that no one in their right mind would spend that amount of time to get ready unless they actually were planning to walk a nationally televised runway. Cause 1. it’s nice to know how much work it takes to look like that 2. it’s fun to have the info incase there is something you do want to look super special for (even if that’s a random tuesday) and 3. It gives me a decent excuse to recreate it myself and I very much enjoy getting the VS treatment on the few chances when I can.

vsangel

The left side is regular old morning (and sometimes all day..) me and the right side is me when I do all of the things I’ve learned over the years from stalking VS backstage and this year FROM ACTUALLY BEING THERE (tomorrow I’ll give you more of the goods on that as well)

Sephora has a few different ones that promise the airbrushed look you talk about… I don’t know if the IT brush is one that you’re obligated to promote, but I hope you’re able to give us a couple of excellent alternatives. Hi Everyone! MAJOR TIP: I went on QVC.com and they currently sell the IT Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe brush set for $39.50. for a 6 piece with travel case. It’s the same brush(es) that she recommends but just singles, not duals. However, for a lesser price…you get the same brushes plus 4 additional ones and for a lesser price. (I was originally going to purchase this at Ulta but then wanted to scout for the same brush but different price. Ebay is tricky because a lot of fake brushes are sold on there. Amazon-priced the same as Ulta. Someone recommended QVC to me for another purchase and I thought “Why not” so I searched for it and found this set! The owner/creator even went on QVC to demo how amazing the brushes are so I know it’s real!) Here’s the link:

I just did a bit more hunting and found a better deal!! I was luckily able to cancel my QVC order.

IT Cosmetics themselves are selling the set for $39.50 with FREE SHIPPING (QVC was charging min $5.70). But ON TOP of that, if you create an account then type “INSIDER” in the coupon code box, you get 20% off! So I ended up paying $31.60.

Here is the link, Cara if you get time maybe change the link so others are directly led there.

        Hi ladies,

I emailed Cara about this but thought I’d post on here as well.

The Brush Set DOES NOT contain anything like the Dual Airbrush that she uses!

I was wondering how could this entire set be sold for less than the Airbrush on its own? May be the set does not actually contain the same brushes? So I emailed them and here is their reply:

        “Hi Sena!
Thanks so much for your email and for being an IT Girl! This is an excellent question! The multi-powder brush in the set actually has a bigger head than the Dual Airbrush Foundation brush. It will be similar in feel, but will have more hairs and cover more area. The flat concealer brush is really not like the concealer end of the Dual Airbrush Foundation brush. It is more flat and is meant to give you precise control even in the smallest areas of the face (corner of the eyes, corner of the nose, etc.).”

So I don’t think either of the set brushes would work for the IIID pack because a bigger head would make it very hard to contour the cheek and the flat concealer end won’t really work for contouring the nose either, though it might work for under the eye…

I ordered the set already so I can post on here abt how it works but it likely won’t get here for another 4-5 days or so.

P.S. Eleni you are SUPER sweet to share the link and coupon! Thanlk you! I think the set is probably an amazing value even if it’s not the same like what Cara used.

Okay so I’m so close to buying Laced Hair Extensions but I’m concerned with how long the I-Do clip ins will last. I’ve heard from some extension brands that you need to replace them every 6 months, every year, etc. I would probably only wear them 4 or 5 times a month. Any idea how long they would last before needing to replace them?

you mentioned you used vs eyeshadow quad in eye contact but that color looks different on the vs website compared to one you are using in your video. Is it sultry maybe?
another question: how should I used the IIID foundation if I have uneven – blotchy skin with darks spots from old acne. should I apply concealer as a base before the IIID foundation? I am worried that the blotchiness and dark spots on my face are going to be really noticeable when I apply the countour color.
    thanks

It is eye contact but the photo on the website just seems to be photographed to look warmer than it actually is:) As for the IIID foundation and blotchy skin, I would say to try it just with the IIIID first and if you feel it’s still loo blotchy start with a tinted moisturizer underneath. Let me know if this works! Thank you!

So I needed a new hairbrush and I picked up the Sonia Kashuk one today. Love it so far! I have super thick long wavy hair and this brush handles tangles like nobody’s business plus I felt like it was gentle on my hair. Thanks for the great recommendation as always!

You are SO awesome. How many girls will show themselves pre-makeup?! Or rather how many claim to be “makeup free” and obviously have a couple products on. You go girl. I am so happy for you and all of your recent successes, you deserve them! I’m on a makeup-buying ban (self-imposed) but once I can buy again your new products are at the top of my list. <3

Hi Cara! When you’re blending the contouring, is there anything on your brush? Like when you’re blending the lines you made with the taupe liner on your nose and cheekbones, is that a clean brush or is there a product on it?

    This look is beautiful!

    Thanks!

I nearly ran over the mail carrier to get to my mailbox today! I just dropped everything I was doing and used my HAC pack for the first time! I almost didn’t b/c I’m not getting out of the house today but decided I just couldn’t wait for an excuse to put on makeup and I’m sure my bf will appreciate it when he gets home lol.
Sorry this is a long comment but I just have to get it all out! Cara – I had a newfound love of makeup after being in a rut for a long time when I discovered your blog. I immediately bought most of the products you recommended for contouring & hilighting and I did get compliments on my makeup but honestly I always felt like I was wearing way more than I liked. And even though I’m 39 and have decent skin and not too many wrinkles, it just seemed to be taking away from me. But that’s what it took to get ‘the look’. I cannot say enough good things about your IIID makeup! I keep looking in the mirror b/c it feels like I’m wearing no makeup at all! I applied everything in minutes and the medium is perfect for me! Bless you bless you bless you for having the desire and courage to go after your dreams!! I think you are about to change a lot of women’s lives in even more drastic ways 🙂

Thanks! Can’t wait to try to VS’ize my face when my HAC pack comes–hopefully just 1 or 2 more days. Also, don’t know if you saw my question on an earlier blog post, but I need sunscreen year-round, even in winter or I burn bad. I do a powdered spf (this one and it comes out clear on my skin http://www.lovelyskin.com/o/colorescience-sunforgettable-mineral-sunscreen-brush-spf-50 ) . Should I put that on before the HAC pack or set with it after?

I just wanted to thank you so much, I have always been so overwhelmed by makeup…my drawer is full of it but I never know what to do with any of it! The HAC is a GAMECHANGER for me and I can’t wait for my pack that I ordered! I’m so grateful that you are putting yourself out there for all of us, and sharing your joy and passion for what you do. I think that it not only helps all of us discover our own beauty, but allows us to share our passions to the world too and know that we all have a voice…And that is a gamechanger as well.

    Hi Cara,

This look is absolutely stunning. I want to buy your IIID Foundation but am torn between the medium and the fair. I typically always use the lightest colour of makeup (ivory is usually the name) BUT am also drawn to the yellow aspect of your Medium in order to combat redness. Can you do a post using different girls with different skin tones in to help us be able to pick the right shade? I think it’s especially tricky to decide between fair and medium! Thank you so much for all of the passion you put into your blog: it shines through so beautifully 🙂

She uses Laced Hair. I use Hair Secrets Extensions – they are from Australia and range from $169-$19$. They come in 30 colors and they will color match you. But they don’t have ombre hair like Laced Hair. My advice is to use high quality Remy hair and handle them gently.

I got my HAC pack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was that enough exclamation points? I LOVE it. My heater was broken today and it was 50 degrees inside and when it arrived in the mail, it was 40 degrees outside (the daily high). Needless to say, the product was cold. At first, I didn’t like the consistency. Then my husband fixed the heater, my brain warmed up and I realized that my HAC pack was just close to frozen. It works great when not slushie temperature :)!

This morning, I thought my shipment might arrive and I spent HOURS looking for my It Makeup dual ended foundation brush I got on Ebay (than you fellow Maskcara fans!). It was MIA! Found it at last! The brush and product is perfect. I have Rosacea. I NEVER wear foundation. I hate how heavy and yucky it feels. I usually just use my Clarisonic and apply moisturizer with sunscreen and some crème blush. Have had the HAC foundation on for hours now, and my face is not itchy or burning, it isn’t creasing, or rubbing off and the look is amazing. Luminous, dimensional, and so easy. Thanks Cara!

You are so fun and I have learned so much from your site. I appreciate your genuine sweet style. I wish you all the best. I hope everyone else loves their HAC packs!

Sorry I meant the It Cosmetics Brush (the one Cara listed above). It is just as wonderful as Cara describes. Best of all it is synthetic fiber and cruelty free. Soft to the touch but firm enough to pick up product and buff it in. Hard to describe other than wonderful and worth the price. Once I learned how important quality brushes were, I began slowly collecting them. I have a few MAC brushes, some from Sephora, a few from Sigma but most from Target – Sonia Kashuk. They are great quality brushes and real person priced!

I don’t have make up brushes and I’ve always just used the ones that have come with my make up (I’m sure that’s terrible – sorry!), but I’m just trying to figure out if those are in fact really good brushes and I wanted to verify that they are a good deal. My HAC is here, my HAC is here!!!! Oh, I couldn’t get that package open fast enough! Don’t you know I got home, made a beeline to wash my face, and redid it straight away with your AH-MAAAA-ZING HAC pack? Didn’t have the recommended brushes even, just went at it with what I had.

I am DYING here — my face looks absofreakinglutely gorgeous, the foundations didn’t settle into any lines or my crazy pores, all redness is covered, but no apparent “foundation” look even in the killer magnifying mirror, it’s miraculous! And can I just say what a beautiful, BELIEVABLE color the Princess Peach blush is — it makes the loveliest luminous flush that looks like my face is lit up from inside. <3

Truth be told, I have gotten to the "wonder years" where my face just wasn't fresh anymore, and regular makeup just kind of sat there, but these products take YEARS off. I had just tried samples of foundations from Chanel and Guerlain (try $45 and $65 each just for a tiny bottle of foundation), that honestly were not better. I am going to have to get a second HAC pack to put in my travel bag — and it will save so much space too!

Seriously, I am running through a month's allotment of exclamation points in a single post, but I am positively giddy. I had more than a little trepidation about ordering foundation just from an online color swatch and text description, because my skin has weird undertones AND I'm particular, but you came through and delivered products that are just incredible. I don't know how you went through months of waiting to bring these out, knowing how fabulous they were and how much we would all love them! I'm so very, very thrilled that you're realizing this part of your dream, because it's making my world happier and more beautiful too.

OH, and I wouldn't be heartbroken AT ALL if you could tweak the blush formulation into colors to make eyeshadows, I really wouldn't. Just sayin'. 😉 I'll stop the embarrassing gushing for now, and join the (long) line of those who think you're the ultimate makeup/BFF/girl crush.

What is the very first thing you put on your face? I don’t see it in the list. It flashes up for a second that it’s from Benefit. What is it, and what does it do? Also, how do you clean your brushes? And how often? I am new to brushes but got the IT brush to use with your makeup and I want to keep it nice and clean and in good shape but don’t know where to start. Thank you! Amazing video by the way.

    Hi Cara,

Thank you for the tutorial–very helpful! I received my HAC pack a few days ago, and I’ve been experimenting with it. I love the colors and your Illuminator is by far the best I’ve ever used!! The only issue I’m having is getting the color to load up. I don’t have the IT brush you recommend yet–planning on getting it and the sponges and brushes I am trying to use are not really picking up the color. I love it when I get some on my face though and can’t wait to figure it out a little more. Any suggestions on applicators if you don’t have that particular brush? Should I be expecting to really press into the pack to get color? Thanks so much!

Hi Cara, I just wanted to update my comment in case anyone was reading these as a basis of their purchase decision making. I bought an inexpensive ($9) brush at Kohl’s (http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1508514/real-techniques-makeup-expert-face-brush.jsp) also available at Ulta and it has solved my initial problems with application! I am so delighted by the look and feel of the HAC pack. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you have put into making sure your customers are satisfied. Wishing you continued success!

Cara, this is amazing, simply amazing. You are stunning and your tutorials are super simple. Love, cannot wait for my bundle to arrive soon (maybe today!) I’m also loving that bright pink/coral robe you’re rocking in the tutorial video, is that a VS find as well??

I got my HAC pack and played around with it today. I have medium. But I wonder if I should have gotten dark? I feel like I hardly notice a difference when I put on the contour. I like the highlighter tho

Cara, I love your blog and you are so beautiful! It is very inspiring to see your before and after face!!! I have a question about the Tomas tanner. When you spray it on your face pre makeup, how long do you wait until you start applying your makeup ? Also, do you moisturize your face before spraying the Tomas? I know that normally you don’t moisturize before applying self tanner but I feel like my face needs it. HELP…I am so pale. Thanks!

Hi Cara! I’m getting married in May and am trying to figure out a way to make my face tan without actually going in the sun or fake-bake. I have olive skin that tans and scars easily so to save my face from wrinkles I load sunblock on. Could you please do a tutorial on how you spray Tomas on the face? I’m scared to spray it directly on my face, so was hoping you would show how to do it .

Thank you so much for everything you do. I look forward to reading your blog posts everyday, and that says allot because I usually subscribe to blogs then just never read the emails. Not with yours though… It’s always the first email/post I open.

Cara, I’m a new follower to your blog and I LOVE IT already! I can’t wait for you to get your medium foundation back in stock so I can purchase it! I just had a couple questions. Do you use anything else besides a primer before using your foundation (moisturizer)? Also I was wondering if you could link the blush, eyeshadow, and bronzer brushes you use in this post. Thank you!
