Makeup Makeup Products My Favorites My Life

MASKCARA | The makeup line. Part One.

{I figured since introducing this line to you is like…one of the best moments of my life and everything, that I had better drag it out for a couple of posts, and make it last!  I hope that’s OK}

I must have been 11 years old when I first decided to wanted to start my own makeup line one day.
I thought about what it would look like and what I would call it mostly. (hence my first science project)
In St. George the only makeup stores at ZCMI (now Dillards) were Estee Lauder, Clinique & Lancome.
So based on that knowledge my assumption was that makeup lines were to be named using words from other languages or that sounded like they should be said with an accent.

I figured the reasonable word to find another language for would be “face” so I looked it up in french first: visage, I didn’t know how to pronounce it so a moved to Italian: volto…it still didn’t sound much like I’d hoped so I checked Spanish:

I had to recheck a few more sources before I finally believed it.
Yes, the word for face in Spanish is spelled C-A-R-A.
This was a sign.
There was no way around it.
I was meant to do this.

For years I kept it in the back of my mind but it’s pretty much a pipe dream so it took a back seat to life.
But as I continued doing makeup I became more and more frustrated with the products available for highlighting and contouring.
Nothing was the right color. I had to mix up a plethora of eye shadows and powders to create the color I really wanted.
I wanted to make it myself. I couldn’t get it off my mind.

But how?

I was barely able to pay my bills at the time. I don’t have family money. No connections. No idea how anyone would even go about creating a makeup product even if they had all of that.
Still, I felt like I needed to be doing something, anything…
I decided to do a blog.
I just wanted to be doing more of what I love again and maybe…somehow it would lead to something?
I planned, studied and practiced for it my entire pregnancy and then for the first 6 months or so of motherhood.

Finding the name was probably the hardest part.
I still had my heart set on using the CARA connection but since the internet is WORLD WIDE Spanish speaking folks had already bought up all the good .coms. Apparently they knew it meant face too.
My whole family pitched in with ideas for the name.
My dad would call me in the middle of the day with his brainstorms.
We had a lot of good ideas but nothing great and nothing that was actually available.
It was my sister who finally thought of maskcara.
Instantly we KNEW it was perfect.
And on April 5, 2011 I posted my first entry:
(I was going for a little bit of a magician thing?  Which I thought was really cool at the time…)

(Thank you a million times Tammy for being my very first commenter! What a good friend you’ve been! I Love you!)

I posted this and 3 eye makeup looks that same day.
And linked it on facebook.
And sat at my computer to refresh the page 1000 times.
I felt so vulnerable but with each sweet and encouraging comment my nerves subsided and were replaced with excitement.

I can’t tell you how much happiness this blog brought into my otherwise very difficult life at the time.
For the next year it was truly one of my saving graces. But I was still no closer to my line…or so I thought.

On a Tuesday in June, Rachel (my sister) called me with life changing news:

“You will not believe who I met today.”

You’re so down to earth and natural, that really inspires me. There is something different about you. When I see other makeup gurus they look amazing, but I always get the feeling that they’re trying too much to look perfect. Not you, you always look fantastic but really natural, like everyone can to it. That’s why I really love to visit 🙂

I would like to think that I have always had a special way with makeup but your advice has taken me above and beyond now. I work from my home in a very small town and one of my clients told me in these exact words…”Well good lord, you look amazing. My mom, although she is the MOST amazing woman I know, isn’t into girly girl things like hair and makeup. So I never had someone to show me the ropes.     Cara, like others have mentioned, I LOVE that you’re so funny and down-to-earth! I wear makeup [almost] every day [but not when I wear yoga pants – it seems disingenuous, ya know?] but I have never HACed [only for stage makeup], so I’ve really enjoyed playing with HACing and trying new things. I bought my first palette (Lorac Pro) and Bahama Mama based on your recommendations. I’m also growing my hair out and have found your hair tutorials really helpful (since I’ve worn my hair really short for most of my life and don’t have years of practice like other girls). Keep laughing at yourself – it’s truly charming. You’re clearly lovely on the outside and I’m thinking you’re a lovely person on the inside too! {request: I have a ski-jump nose – what’s the best way to contour?}

Hola Cara, I am happy for you. I understand what it means to start that journey towards entrepreneurship. It’s sweet. I tasted the rewards and the disappointments. One of my let down was that I let my nerves get the best of me, my excitement overwhelmed me and all the energy I had became negativity…AND I didn’t have the right people surrounding me that I could trust to have my back. Of course it didn’t help that I was suffering the onset of my injuries from two car accidents, I had 6 herniated disc’s, 3 in my neck and 3 in my lumbar, and I decided to keep trying. Now I realize I needed to wait a while to let my body heal. When the Universe is behind you, everything you need and the right people will step in the help you. I am delighted to be part of your journey. Much happiness along the way. Don’t be afraid, be delighted. La Glorya de Nueva York…my name in Spanish means Heaven.

What a great story! I love reading personal things about those I’ve put on a pedestal, and you handle them deftly, with humor tempering the times of desperation we all go through. Now that I’m in my late 50s, I find myself using less makeup; just a little baked mineral foundation, judicious highlighter, and Lancome mascara. Maybe my diligent skincare is finally paying off. But I do like to get “dolled up” for special occasions, and you have given me lots of fabulous hints. And your blog is terrific! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is so exciting, congratulations! I love your blog and I have been checking it everyday since I found it in 2011. All of my friends check your blog too and we talk about what we have learned from you that week. Thank you you for your posts and thank you for sharing with us. You have helped me so much! I practiced one of your makeup looks on my mom when she was in town and she loved it so much, she went that day and got the makeup you told us about to redo the look.

Also, it’s funny but one day last year I was in trader joes and saw a girl that looked just like you and I thought no it couldn’t be. I had to ask and I did, I said , ” are you Maskcara?” You said yes and I was star struck. I told you I loved your blog and I have learned so much. I couldn’t think of anything else to say until I was driving home and then I was thinking of all sorts of things to talk about. I was on cloud nine and I called everyone to tell them about who I saw in the store. Even now, when someone will mention your blog, I am like, you know I met her one time but I couldn’t think of anything to say because I was star struck.

Cara, I’m soo excited for your make up!!! You are the main reason I’m even going to the Pinners Conference! I’m confused and maybe I missed you posting about it on here but on Friday what times are your classes? I signed up for the earlier one and it said it was make up dos and dont and the 6 pm was best kept secret but then when I go look at the list of classes on the main page it says opposite. Does that make sense? If you can, please clear this up for me! Thanks!!

      Friday, 6:00pm Saturday 9:30am
      Dos and don’ts
      Friday, 1:30pm Sat. 5pm

I have a lot of the same thoughts you did right now! I love makeup and just recently started a blog and I love doing it! I want to be a makeup artist and eventually have my own line. I can never find a makeup that my skin is “happy” with and hopefully one day I can make that happen! So encouraging!

I just have to tell you and I see that you hear this a lot but hopefully it doesn’t get lost on you…you are SUCH an inspiration. I can totally relate to your 1% reason up there and you have totally inspired me to start blogging and sharing my writing (which I’ve always been way too terrified to do until reading your story). I’ve found so much happiness in your blog and following your story and because of you I am sharing mine…scary but what do we have to lose, right? Worst case is no one reads it and that’s not so bad. You don’t know me, but I am one of your very first followers, from back in the day when your blog was black. I remember the day I found your blog, I read and read and read until I had read every single post, and then I told my husband, “I don’t know who she is but she is onto something great, I just really wish she would update her website” (haha). Being a website designer it bugged me for months to see such amazing content on such a dark blog, I even offered to redesign it for you free of charge. I just fell in love with everything about this blog, it’s not just the beauty tips, it’s you, you have a way of drawing people in. You are so very real and genuine and yet incredibly gorgeous. You have opened yourself and your life to your readers and it has made us love you as if we knew you. I had read one of your previous posts about how you always wanted to have your own line and you have no idea the joy it brought me to read this. Anyway, I hope this post does not sound weird, I honestly only follow 2 blogs and never ever comment, but I thought I should tell you that. So happy for you. 🙂

Hope you know you have a planned parenthood advertisement on your site, I am wondering if you support p.p. and if you know they are the largest abortion provider in the USA and have killed many BORN babies… I love your blog, respect you as a strong mother and loving person, and have learned so much but if you are a supporter of p.p. I will no longer visit… it will break my heart as I had so much respect for you… if you do, it looks like fame is getting to you… along with innapropriate language, I would love for my young daughter to learn from your amazing beauty and teaching skills but would not let her on with language creeping in… hoping and praying! Misswrangler! I am so sorry that ad popped up for you! I DO NOT endorse or affiliate with PP or any of the ads that pop up on my sidebar, I’ve always used google ads and they are usually very reliable in populating the site with ads that are relevant to the reader. Please know that I will make a request that that ad (or any other inappropriate ads) not be shown here. I also apologize for any inappropriate language I have used. I would never want a mother to have to second guess her daughter visiting my blog. Thank you for letting me know about the ad and your concerns. I hope you will give me another chance:) With Love, Cara

I’m a dreamer myself and I know how it feels when a dream comes true, especially when life gets in the way. For the name part, I actually believed it was more like ‘must ask cara’ hence maskcara. 😛 Seemed that way because you end up answering questions from novices like me. 🙂 Btw, you write really well. I like the suspense ending to this blog post.

What a wonderful and inspiring story! I, too, spent hour upon hour in front of the mirror as a girl, pretending I was a make-up artist, so it’s particularly fun for me to live vicariously through you. Thanks for sharing your journey! I’m not sure if you can share these secrets or not, but it would be fun to hear how one develops their own line of cosmetics, as well, and I can’t WAIT for your highlighting and contouring products to come out. I’m being as patient as I can (I know you want to get them just right), but it’s not easy. 🙂

Your inspiring and make everyone feel beautiful! I absolutely cannot wait till your makeup line comes out! On another note, I know how you have liked to set your makeup with bronzer recently and I tried it and loved it. I wanted to recommend a product to you for that( you may have already tried it, who knows, but just thought I would fill you in). The product is It cosmetics bye bye pores airbrushed bronzer. it leaves a wonderful finish to the skin and looks great, and only the tiniest amount is needed. You can buy it at qvc or ulta. Anyways just thought I would let you know about it and maybe you could give it a try. 🙂 Much Love- Meredith

I have been a silent follower for quite some time now and an avid lover of your blog. I stumbled across your blog looking up the latest trends in makeup to give myself a new look out of pure boredom. I started reading and couldn’t help but become attached to it. I knew I would be back after saying in my head ‘this girl knows EXACTLY whats going on!’. You some how managed to combine everything I was looking for in one page. I have always been OBSESSED with makeup and the entire industry and this blog always brought a smile to my face seeing someone as absolutely darling as you go out in the world and make it all happen. Today I have to break my silence and yell ‘YOU GO GIRL!’ Your blog has been such an inspiration to me, and not just with makeup. Nobody is more deserving of this opportunity and boy have you earned it! You are such an awesome person and it clearly radiates with every post you write. As everyone else, I am trying to patiently wait for your products. Plus, you were on my side of the world recently and I didn’t even know. Depressing. But, I understand the concerns for who supports what, and it going against your personal beliefs. Totally, everyone has to believe in something, but I don’t really think saying she was letting fame get to her was fair because of the language slip ins. That actually really bothered me, and I mean no disrespect, but a lot of people do tend to slip when they’re comfortable. I know that I, as an avid, obsessive reader, love knowing that you’re so comfortable with us. All of these people you don’t personally know. I read the above comment about someone seeing your article and speaking to no one that they knew you, and realized that they didn’t. I died laughing. It’s so true though, you are one of the most relatable people I’ve come across on the internet. You’re completely wonderful, and just as I know others are, your success feels like we are also succeeding in a small way as well.

Tenses? First/second/third person? Apparently, ain’t nobody got time for that. I hope it’s easily discern able. Who knows, I may look crazy.
