Brow School Makeup

Brow School Q & A

Why your brows don't match!
I get this question ALL THE TIME.
While some faces are less or more symmetrical than others, as long as your following you basic dimensions (HERE) you should let your natural brows be your guide. If they are naturally quite different chances are so are your eyes and by making your brows too symmetrical you could actually be challenging the balance in your face!
The other problem I’ve seen with tweezer-over-achievers is that when you get too perfectionistic you can easily get carried away and end up with small thin baby brows, that probably still aren’t perfect enough.
If this has already happened it’s OK. I would recommend letting them grow for a month or two (however long it takes for yours to get full again) You can still clean up in the unibrow and down very low into your eyelid where know KNOW you don’t want hair, but other than that let them go. It will be painful, but it’s worth it to getting those babies back on track. And trust me no one is as bothered by your brow scruff as you are, most people don’t even notice.
And now, a couple of my brow makeovers! (this brow school may go forever! 🙂

Fantasy Brow Makeovers

This is for Jessica. (BTW you are beautiful!)
As you can see in the photos I barely had to change her brows at all, but the tiny changes really opened her up.
First I took off a small amount of hair in the inner corners of her brows, to give her more space between lid and brow and also to round them off a bit. Next I brought her arch up in the outer half.  Sometimes when brows are pointing down they have a closed off or sad effect. by bumping up that are you really wake  up and look brighter and happier. It may take some filling above your natural arch (I do that) or just growing them in a little higher but it only takes a tiny bit of elevation to make a huge impression.

Fantasy Brow Makeovers

OK you are beautiful too! I feel awful but for some reason, when I saved this photo I didn’t add a name! So if you see this please comment to tell me your name, I tried to go through the emails and find it but there were nearly one thousand so, I thought this might be easier!
With these brows I saw a similar subtle downward angle that I wanted to perk up a bit. Since she has plenty of space between lid and brow I went another route and filled in her inner corner lower, leaving her outer corners the same. Still adding some oomph to the arch. Other than that I just filled them to be a little darker and a wee bit closer together. (if I had done it in real life I would have used MAC shadow in Brun to do that) I love the way it softens her expression just enough and gives her some intensity.

What do you guys think, do you agree?

Love it Cara, thank you! I’ve read that if your nose is a little wide (mine is at the nostrils) you should start your eyebrows from mid nostril. Have you found that to be true?

That looks great! I have been working on my brows for a while now and it makes such a big difference. Even if I wear hardly any makeup, I still fill in my brows. I am still struggling how to get the arch. When I watch one of your video tutorials and you draw it on with a brush, I try to mimic that but am having a hard time. The shape of yours always look so good. I definitely still struggle to get the shape right. When I do mine, they look better than if I don’t do anything but sometimes they just end up looking like arches.

It’s so crazy that such subtle changes can make that big of a difference. I stopped over-tweezing a few months ago and decided to go with the bigger is better approach. It’s so much easier to maintain AND looks so much more natural. Win/Win!

Hey Cara are you still taking pics for eyebrow school? I would love to get your opinion on mine. Like a previous post said, I’ve been working really hard but still have issue with getting my arch so awesomely angled like you do. And I also discovered doing my brows on days I’m not wearing much other makeup makes a huge difference. 🙂

Great post again! I just discovered your website a couple days ago and have seriously spent about an hour or 2 each day trying to catch up with all your other posts! So much awesome advice! I started reading your blog by seeing the post about common pitfalls people make. I know this could be opening a can of worms, but you should have people send in their pictures (such as mine!) who would love for you to do their makeup, but live too far. You can tell us what we’re doing wrong. I’m doing something wrong, but I can’t put my finger on it.

The left side of my side is naturally higher than the other side. eye wise, anyway. My eye makeup always looks different and so do my brows. i used to hate it, and sometimes it still annoys me, but i just let it be now and i don’t fight it. I just think that at least I can say it’s natural and that I’m not messing up my eye makeup hahaha

I wax and pluck but thats it. No shape. Not even sure coloring in would work on me. Is there a way to send you a picture?

I agree that the second one is a little too harsh. She looks much sweeter and happier in the first picture. The filling in/darkening is good, but I don’t think they needed to be extended so far down. The first one looks great, though! 🙂
