Beauty Basics Brow School Makeup My Favorites Tips & Tricks

Brow School: Theory

One of my favorite things about eyebrows are how versatile and varied they are.
Brows are like snowflakes, no two the same (not even two on the same head!).
In fact, I read a study where they took photos of celebrities and removed just their eyes in half and just their brows in the other. The photos without brows were the least likely to be recognized by the survey.
Brows play a huge part in face recognition.
Which explains why even the slightest change in the eyebrows of a makeover will throw the model off completely. How could it not? According to this study she barely recognizes herself now!
Still, withย many women saying they’d love some eyebrow assistance, I’d say the first step is getting comfortable with a little experimentation (not with the tweezers, with the shadow) to find the best shape, thickness and length. So I rustled up some inspiration.

The best brows.

I think this example show that there really aren’t any rules. Cara has nearly black and very thick brows with blonde hair and fair skin, Charlize’s are thin and soft with tan skin. Both look beautiful to me.
It’s all about preference.
Whose brows do you like? & Why?

Homework assignment for tonight: Do a little celebrity browsing/brow stalking. (on TV, internet, magazines or wherever)
Pay attention to the length, the thickness, the arch. Get familiar with what you like.
For those of us who are not brows obsessed this might be pretty eye opening (pun intended)
I’ll warn you now though, once you open this door, you’ll never not notice eyebrows again.

See you tomorrow!

Ive been wanting to know what style of brow would suit my face properly…and I love the way you shape brows in your posts and on your makeovers!! I wonder is there a chance if I send you a photo of my face you could draw on what style you would suggest?? even if its a vague photoshopped brush mark – It would be crazy useful for me to see what you think…and maybe make a really viral thread for your readers to share. Congrats on your win, you rock chica xx

Eyebrows are addicting! I have a dark, thicker brow, and never thought I needed to “do” them outside of tweezing. Last year, I had them “done”. One brow in and I thought I looked angry. Two done and they looked so different. I felt a little odd at first, but when I washed my face later and the makeup came off I felt naked! I do them daily now, I don’t feel right without them done!
I love your blog, tips, and pictures!!! Thank you for making beauty fun and accessible!

You know I love your blog. LOVE it. This is the best, most fun beauty blog I’ve ever come across. But I really wish you would include those with black hair in your blogs. ๐Ÿ™ On the first day of Brow School, you only give the option of blonde, brunette or redhead. Those aren’t the only options though. So many of us have black hair. I hope you will take the time to include us also!

Kari! Oh the last thing I would want would be to exclude anyone! I guess I am just a ditz and I figured brunette meant dark hair! (people always called me a brunette when mine was black!) The option for bold brows on the brunette section would work perfectly for black hair as well:)

I’m so excited that you are doing this series. My brows are naturally thin and when a make up artist did my face recently for my daughter’s wedding, I couldn’t believe how different I looked with my eyebrows filled in!

I can’t wait to read more. Just one question…yesterday you recommended using powder rather than a pencil. Does the powder smear at all and does it hold up to humidity? Thanks so much, Cara.

I wasn’t seeing anything close to what my brows could pull off till I spotted the pic you have of Angelina Jolie. Those are my brows! Since I’ve been filling them in, that is, with the Anastasia Brow Powder you suggested in one of your blogs ages ago. Makes a world of difference and my husband is a big fan. Thanks so much!

Hi Cara! So I have a question for you! I’m a natural redhead and my eyebrows are totally blonde. When I don’t have makeup on it appears I don’t have eyebrows until I fill them with my pencil and shadow. It’s a little bothersome because unlike people with dark brows, it’s very hard for me to create my shape every day because I can’t even see my own eyebrow hair. I LOVE this eyebrow school that you’re doing because I feel so incomplete without having them! Is there anyway you could do a tutorial on someone with my similar problem so I can see how to do this properly? Also, Camilla’s are my favorite. I’m a big fan of Lilly Collin’s too! So full and gorgeous!

I grew up in the Brooke Shields era so I was always happy with my thick eyebrows although making sure there were two was always my challenge. I don’t fill mine in but I notice the inner brows grow in gray :(. I pluck that for sure, maybe I need to start filling in the start point. Looking at my Athletawomens catalog it looks like some models have over plucked, maybe we should send them to Brow School ASAP.

HI, Cara! I have dark, thick eyebrows and I’m not sure what to do with them. I’ve tried tweezing them, but I did something weird and had to let them grow back. I’m soooo glad you are doing a brow school, cuz I don’t know what to do! ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you think that you should consider face shape when deciding what arch to go with? Or eye shape? I personally love Natalie portman’s!
I notice that whenever I shop for one of your recommendations on amazon, the other products that you mention are in the “customers who bought this also bought” list ๐Ÿ™‚ superstar much?

I have always been really brow obsessed. In highschool the trend was really thin brows and of course i had very thick bushy italian brows and plucked the heck out of them and now I wish I had my old brows back! I do fill them in nicely but it would be nice not to have to anymore. If you or anyone has suggestions to grow them back please let me know!

One thing you fail to mention is how some eyebrows make you look more masculine and others more feminine. In your favs there are quite a few masculine looking brows. Men find diferent things attractive in women than women do in other women. For example an off the rack male woudnt like a stick thin, rectangle body type, woman with callerpilar brows close to the eyes, and cheekbones contoured super high and prominent. Those are male features. A less thin woman with a more hourglass shape, lower cheekbones, plump cheeks, and softer but still arched brows set a bit higher on the face (as opposed to touching the mobile lid low!) would be more attractive.
