Easily one of my favorite tricks. Not only because it’s easy but it’s also versatile, you can use it with any color combo you like and it looks softer and more subtle than almost any other technique. Perfect for everyday wear.
Here are some of my favorite picks for blended eyelined color combos:
For a smoky look: This black eyeliner and Maybelline’s Caffeine Rush shadow Pallet.
For Lorac Pro Palette owners: Teddy liner + Taupe & Espresso (for less drama, drop the Espresso and stick with the Taupe)
For Stila In the Light Palette owners: (what I used in the video) Damsel Liner + Bliss & Sandstone
For a really soft look: NYX liner in Brown & your bronzer to blend
I hope this helps, I don’t know why but I have so much anxiety about doing videos, I am NEVER happy with them and I have to redo ’em like 1000 times before I post. I’ll get it together eventually…

May 21, 2013 at 5:41 amVery helpful video. So you do the eyeliner after the other eye makeup? For some reason that makes me so nervous!
Cara
May 21, 2013 at 9:26 pmYou can do it before also, just for the sake of making the video quick I did all of that before. It works either way!

May 21, 2013 at 6:24 amJust found you and your blog recently. Really loving it. One question about this smokey tip. I see you use primer on your entire eye and then you do the eyeliner/shadow. So then do you NOT go back and put any type of shadow over the primer? And..if you happen to be looking for future videos or topics I would love to see something for women of age. I’m 51 and unfortunately my eyes just aren’t what they used to be. Not the beautiful texture of you younger girls and a little bit more baggage if you know what I mean. ;o) Would love a trick to make my eye look more open. Keep up your awesome blog and being your beautiful self.

You should totally not worry about the videos. We all love them. I graduated recently and for my graduation make up I literally had my laptop open on my vanity so that I could stop and start your videos as I went.

Do you put on concealer and foundation before the eye shadow primer? I’ve been trying both ways but still it seems to gunk up on me. Any suggestions?

May 21, 2013 at 9:46 amCongratulations on your win, amazing!!! I love makeup and hair, love products and tips… but lots of blogs cover that. What makes your blog different is that you have the perfect mix of products, makeovers, and most importantly – heart. You seem like such a good person and that shines through in your posts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and also parts of yourself with us!

May 21, 2013 at 9:49 amI recently found your blog and really appreciate all the great tips, advice, photos, and videos! Your explanations are so simple and make so much sense… thank you! One question about eyeliner / blended eyeshadow and creating that soft look: how do you know which shadows will also work well as liners, and when you should stick to an eye pencil? Thanks in advance!

May 21, 2013 at 9:55 amCongratulations, Cara!! As a little girl, I used to love watching my mom put on her make up. My sister and I would play around with her make up (she was really generous), and my Dad was even patient enough to let his little girls put every single hair accessory they owned in his hair to play “hair dresser”. So, I have always loved playing around with beauty, but never really figured out how to best accentuate the features I have in a skillful and natural way–I’m super clueless. I have to tell you that I have learned SO much since I stumbled across your blog about a year ago. You have so many great ideas for looks, tips, and tricks that you break down in such a relatable way that without fail have me thinking “Oh, yay! Now I can do that too!”. Hello, HACing! You made your wonderful skills and techniques accessible to your readers so we can get that extra oomph and sass that comes from feeling good on the outside to match the inside. You certainly deserve the recognition from Allure!! Great job!!

May 21, 2013 at 11:51 amThis is how I usually do my eyeliner as well. I love eyeliner, but I don’t want it to look too harsh. I almost always wear black liner so I like to go over it with black shadow or silver metalic shadow.

May 22, 2013 at 2:25 amHey Cara, first of all: Congrats!!!
Can you give us some advice for how to put one’s eye make-up on hooded eyes? I mean if the lid is a bit hidden, you know? that would be great, because I always think its a difference and a bit difficult if the lid is like this.

May 22, 2013 at 9:15 amDid this today with the exact same colors that you use and LOVE it. It might be my new go-to for quick simple makeup that looks awesome. and ps, since I discovered your blog and have started using your makeup techniques (specifically HAC) my self esteem has SOARED. I feel like I look so much prettier, but it’s so simple and my face doesn’t feel heavy with product. Thanks for everything.

May 22, 2013 at 11:17 pmOMG thank you for posting this! i know you’ve written instructions on other tutorials that you blended the eyeliner, but i completely interpreted it differently! LOL no wonder it wasn’t coming out like your photos! haha. i was just taking my brown eye liner and using the foam tip on the other end and “smudging” it! LOL i feel so moded! thanks for the clarification. can’t wait to try it in the morning!

May 23, 2013 at 8:47 amso after seeing this video I sent my husband out to Sephora to bring me home the Stila palette. I LOVE this look, pretty easy and lasts thru the day. <My question tho, is my eyeshadow (over the eyeliner) doesn't see, to go on as dark as yours, could it be the brush? Im not sure my brush is a true "smudge" brush.
Jen
May 23, 2013 at 8:50 pmI always like your videos and I learn so much. You do a great job! Next time, can you do a still pic at the end to show your finished look?
