Makeup My Favorites

Nerd Alert!

Glasses makeup ideas.

I’ve been dwelling on glasses makeup for A LONG TIME now.
Since I don’t wear glasses my knowledge was limited so I ordered some clear ones, started studying photos and celebs, and did some practice.

Geek Chic | Makeup tutorial for girls in glasses.
My brother in law Carl has been wearing clear (AKA faux) glasses for years. I grabbed some of his to do some experimenting. When I noticed things got a little blurry, Carl informed me that he actually needs glasses now (he was beaming). We shared a very high five and I congratulated him.

In other words glasses are cool.
They add 10 points to your IQ (visually of course), conceal dark circles in an instant, can shorten the appearance of a long nose and are a must for a Geek Chic look.
I had my sister Rachel throw some on and did her makeup to show what I’ve discovered.

Geek Chic | Makeup tutorial for girls in glasses.
As usual this is just my take, no one with glasses is stuck to using this tips every day but everyone of you four eyed babes should try it at least once!

1. Eye Brows: Drawing them in high and bold really frames those frames. It also adds a subtle sexiness that really feeds into the whole “I’m sexy and I don’t know it” thing. I used Dark brown shadow and an angled brush. Seriously, higher and bolder than you think. It won’t look very good without the glasses but once they’re on you’ll LOVE it.
2. Defining the eye: Spend most of your time and color directly around the eye. I used a dark brown liner and smudged it in with a brown shadow using this smudge brush. then I used a bare shadow on the rest of my lid up to the brow. Next, I layered her with a heavy coat of mascara.
You could use other colors as well but keep it right around the eye, that way it doesn’t compete with the frames.
3. Show some lip: I wanted to keep the look sweet and natural but I still wanted her lips to stand out. I defined them with a taupe liner (which creates a subtle contour and pout) then filled them with a nude sheer lipstick.

For the skin I did my glowing makeup (because skin is important with every look) and because the highlight and contour is especially important in this look.

Let me know if you would like to see a video tutorial on this, if so I will surely oblige:)

ALSO! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me on the challenge last week…
I WON AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the heck? How cool is that!?
You guys rock my world.
Go on over and check this weeks competition if you have some extra minutes. It will be worth your while, promise.
And be sure to vote!

Congratulations on the win last week! I loved the idea of using things where they don’t belong. Seriously! Why did it take someone giving me permission to do that??! I have very fair skin, so I was having trouble finding something to use as a highlighter for HAC. Ummmm, white eyeliner pencil. Hurrah! You are my hero!!

Hi Cara, YES!! Do a tutorial, especially to demonstrate the brow technique you have suggested. I have voted for you every week because I read your blog and knew about you prior to the contest. I have watched and read all of the other bloggers submissions as well as read the feedback from the judges and I believe you are the best. I cannot wait to read what Molly Rancal has to say about you- like you she doesn’t believe in rules. Good Luck!

Yep, it’s eyeliner! Cara almost always uses Covergirl’s “Mink” eyeliner as lipliner. I bought it and love it – wear it as lipliner everyday. Make-up your own rules, remember!

Awesome! I’ve been waiting for makeup tips with glasses 🙂

However, I’m just curious, would you say that the brow shape/arch should change depending on the shape of the particular frames you are wearing? Or would you say the shape you’ve done works no matter what?

I have a fairly long face and I wear rectangular black frames, not the more circular shape you have on.

This is awesome!!!! Thank you so much Cara. I have been a glasses wearer since KINDERGARTEN and I’ve always hated that you can’t see my eyes behind them (seriously, in junior high, NO one realized my eyes are blue, and they are the coolest shade too, so I’ve been really mad at my stupid glasses ever since!!).

So thank you!! I’m excited to try the high brow arch, that will be fun 🙂

We need some poolside make up tips though! How to keep my face from melting off with all that chlorine…

    1. I don’t wear glasses, but seeing how seriously sexy this looks makes me (almost) wish I did!!!

    2. I’m probably the millionth person to say this, but does your sister have any idea how incredibly beautiful she is?! God bless her! You’re pretty damn gorgeous yourself! Are all your siblings this hot? Have you any single brothers? (Sorry, I got carried away).

    3. With regards the competition, I think it’s important you know that you’re not winning simply because you have the most loyal fans (although, you most definitely do. Because you’re so awesome). You keep winning because you are incredibly talented. You don’t just know how to bring out the best in everyone using make-up, but you have this insane ability to think of new and practical ways to make sure EVERYBODY can use make-up confidently, in the way that they want, however the want. Regular readers love coming back here again & again because we simply feel like you understand the average woman. I’m not saying all this because I am blinded by my love for you (that came out all weird…). I only came across this site a few weeks ago, & I haven’t looked at all your past posts, but even the dozen or so that I have read were enough to make me see that you’re pretty special.

Also, I bought rectangular frames because I liked how they looked on someone else. Then I didn’t like them on me. They seemed so harsh. A year later (when insurance kicked in again) I bought new frames and I changed my hair color. Guess what? Now those old frames are my fave! Wish you could do my make up for each hair color/glasses frames stage I go through!!! I’m totally voting for you all the time!! So glad I found your blog. I love it. I work for an Opthamology practice. I work in optical so I’m well versed in glasses. I’ve worn them since I was five also. Keep in mind that depending on your prescription it will either make your eyes appear much larger or smaller. I am farsighted so the size of my eyes actually appears enlarged. For the nearsighted person, your lenses can make your eyes appear smaller. The stronger the prescription, the more exaggerated. Just wanted to point that out as I’m sure that can affect makeup application as well. Enough of the technical stuff. Keep posting your great stuff.

    Video pleaaase!
i’m from brazil and i started unsing glasses when i was 5 years old! at first i was so embarrassed by it :/
now i’m 19 and i’m kinda embrassing the hole geek vide that glasses give you. Thank you so much for this quick tutorial! sometimes i feel like people hide themselves behind glasses (me included). Besides it quite hard to know when it’s too much make up.
thanks again and just in love with your blog,

I love this look so much! I’ve been a reading-and-driving glasses wearer for years and years, and have recently been upgraded to an all-the-time wearer. I’d love to see a dressier look, for like church or a date. Or maybe just a post on how to do the smudged eyeliner look with color. I have green eyes, if you need an eye color inspiration. 😀
Thanks again for another fantastic look!

Thanks so much – I love reading your posts. My problem with wearing glasses is that the top of the frame makes it next to impossible for people to see the top of my eyes. Eyeshadow is almost a waste of time because no one can see it. I try to focus on the brows and lower lashes, which people can actually see. I’m not sure that I’m doing a good job, though.

You wouldn’t by chance remember what brand of glasses your sister was wearing in the first photo would you? I have been trying to find something similar and can’t seem to find them. Love the makeup it is very hard to try to bring out your features when your hiding behind glasses. Always do my eyes a little bit heavier so they don’t get lost.

I’m almost positive those are Rayban’s. All of their glasses have those little stud-things in the corners. (I recently had to get new frames and tried on almost all the Rayban styles, and they all had those.)
