Eyeshadow School Makeup Products

Making a case for eye shadow palettes.

I get it.
I will eat 1,000 miniature Snickers before I will open a full candy bar. That big hefty bar seems like total gluttony but the mini’s are so harmless! They’re cute and little, they couldn’t possibly make it to my hips!

So when I recommend an eye shadow palette and you guys are like “Dude, Cara! What about something a little bit cheaper, it’s a RECESSION!!?”
I hear ya. But in my experience (and trust me I’ve weighed it out heavily) you save yourself a lot of money by buying a nice palette that you love instead of a bunch of individuals.
Even if you were to buy drugstore brands, they tend to have less pigment and less shadow altogether. So before you know it, you’ll be back to the bag grabbing a few more minis. By the time your done you’ll have eaten 5 naked palettes. (sorry I’m mixing up my analogy…you know what I mean though, right!?)

All that being said I don’t recommend palettes to you ladies without EXTENSIVE research (blood, sweat, tears, 5 Sephora trips, online review binging, swatches to the point of staining my hands and wrists etc.)
For this spring and summer palette I was really looking for a tool that:

  • Has some rosy tones (they are all the rage and look beautiful on:)
  • Would be stunning on any skin type or eye color,
  • Has both shimmer and matte choices
  • Is high quality with high pigmented colors & a creamy blendable texture
  • Has no “I love this color but I’ll never wear it”s
  • Is a good companion to build on my last recommend (Lorac Pro Palette) cause lord knows we aren’t throwing it out any time soon!
  • Is in a compact case that is good quality so it doesn’t rip, fall apart or take up too much space in your makeup case
  • Is under $45
  • Had high costumer reviews

Oh hi Stila, you must have read my mind.

Perfect Palette for Spring/Summer
In The Light by Stila
This bad boy came with everything I wanted and more. BONUS! a dashing dark brown liner is included. All for $38!
{Get it HERE}
I’m going to be using this in many of my upcoming tutorials (promise I still do those, haha been working on some I’m really excited about like makeup for GLASSES!)

Yet, I will finish this post with this promise:
If you can afford it get it in your shopping cart like, yesterday; but if it’s just not in the budget right now don’t stress! I will still be finding drugstore counterparts as often as possible, you have my word:)

PS You can vote for the Allure contest once a day all week, it just has to be 24 hours since your last vote! (HERE) Thank you thank you to everyone who has taken the time to vote, it makes me smile so big my face hurts.

Hi Cara, thanks for this post. I can’t wait for your “glasses” tutorial as I notice my makeup looks SO DIFFERENT when I’m wearing my glasses. Also, I thought we could vote every day for the Allure contest. You have seriously changed my makeup routine and I have gotten SO many compliments on my new way of makeup…I also tell everyone about your blog and how you’ve changed my life. My hair on the other hand could use major help, I have hair to the middle of my back that I swear falls out way more than it should and I have a 9 month old daughter that is ALWAYS grabbing it so it pretty much stays up in a bun and I feel gross about it. Thought a million times about chopping it off but my husband won’t let me!! Having good looking hair is hard when you have a little one!!! Ugh mom problems lol thank you so much for everything you post!!

For those who are considering making the purchase, the pallet comes with a little booklet of 6 different looks and how to get them, which was part of why I felt the cost was worth it (not to mention the liner is really great).

I’m definitely thinking about getting this, but I have one question first. I was raised by my dad, so I have virtually no makeup. I have some foundation from neutrogena, a single mascara, one eyeliner pencil, and a three pack of eyeshadow bought for $8 at the local drugstore. I am a college student (and therefore don’t have a cashflow so much as a cashdrought), but am thinking about asking for some money to buy the basics for my birthday. Do you think you could possibly do a post that is jus that: the absolute basics that you feel a makeup kit needs? I am really late into the makeup learning process and love reading your blog! Thank you so much for everything I’ve already learned!

I sent them an email complaining that I was about to check out and all of a sudden it was gone, AND that I was chatting with a bunch of other people on a beauty blog about this issue. It will be bad for them to lose all these orders, I am sure plenty of people were ordering because of this! Customer service like that will make me refuse to purchase their products again.

I went to Sephora to check this palette out and brought my Lorac Pro for comparison. I decided that the colors were way too similar, almost identical, between the two so I think I don’t need both. If you have neither palette I would still recommend the Lorac Pro over the Stila because it is only $4 more (unless you use a discount coupon on Stila) but you get SIX more colors. Though I’m curious if Cara would agree abt them being very similar and about Lorac being the better value. She would know better but that is my personal evaluation.

Check it out, there are 2 others in store, but the Convertable color in that palette is AWESOME! Here’s the link

This is my FAVORITE pallette! I have been a lover of stila from the beginning (Jeanine once did my makeup. Ahh!) I have had it for under a year and 4 of the colors are almost gone. One of the stila tips is to use the shadows as liners and I ALWAYS do. Occasionally I will use a normal liner but rarely. In fact the only one I own came in the pallette. For me normal liners just seem too harsh. Any way with a wet brush try out the brown plus the black or the blue plus the black. Seriously. Even the brown or black plus your shimmery rosey neutral. For real. Oh and I use the matte yellow and neutral for your HAC. Because it is what I had. It works lovely (at least for me). 10 eyeshadows, multiple liner combos and 2 ingredients for HAC all for $38??? How is that NOT a good deal???

I am NOT an eye shadow person, never have been. I can never do it right and even if i do manage to get lucky and it looks good, it doesnt seem to stay on long. I’ve finally attributed it to the fact that maybe its bc I dont have good eye shadows and theyre cheap. I was at ULTA yesterday and decided i need to try a palette and really commit myself to working on eye shadows.. I pulled ur blog up on my phone to see which one it was that u recommended (this one!), and since I knew nothing about what to get and you give the BEST advice, i got this one… I am in LOVE!! I got home and practiced so many diff ways, and they all looked amazing. i woke up this morning and was excited to try another, then worked out and it still looked amazing. im SO happy i got this, im hoping this is all I will need for a while. thank you cara!!! <3 u!

I have had this palette for almost a year and I use it pretty much every day, I don’t know what I did before I got it!

The dark matte brown is perfect for my brows, the bliss shade is great for a day time contour shade, you can do a great brown smokey eye with a mix of the colours and I love to use the bubbly with the night sky and a navy blue liner to bring out my blue eyes.

I’m considering buying about 4 of these to give to my sister and girlfriends!

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before, but with good hygiene eyeshadow (or any powder) could last you for about 3 years. So that’s not quite as bad of a blow to the wallet. (I got this info here: http://www.paulaschoice.com/expert-advice/skin-care-basics/_/when-should-i-throw-out-a-product#game)

Although I’m not sure what the verdict is on wet/dry eyeshadow, which is my personal fave.
