A Love Story

Nick and I met about 7 years ago.  Typical boy meets girl, they fall in love and then…he dumped me.

I guess I’m getting a little ahead of myself.
It all started with this photo:

I was living in San Francisco but visiting my hometown (St. George UT) for my little sister’s wedding when I went to lunch with a good friend. On our way out of her office we stopped to talk to her coworker, Bevan. He said he had a son named Nick, who was playing golf at BYU (about 3 hours away) and swore that if he sent a photo of me he’d be here in a hot minute to take me on a date. So I awkwardly posed for a photo and didn’t really think much of it afterward. Apparently, Nick didn’t either because he ever showed up.

Although, a few weeks later I received this email:

I know emails from complete strangers are a little creepy, but I wanted to make sure it was ok that I was given your email address.  Im sorry if my Dad weirded you out a little…. I can’t believe he made you pose for a pic….. gotta love parents.  So I have your email and now you have mine.  I just wanted send a quick message to say hello and…… to see if you really exist…  So email me back sometime, I think it would be cool to talk some, either internet or phone or whatever.  I look forward to hearing from you.

From then on were pretty much inseparable (by phone of course) if we weren’t talking we were texting. A million questions, conversations and stories.

I loved how easy he was to talk to. I loved that he seemed genuine. I loved his understated charm.

We met in person a few weeks later when he was on a Golf trip to San Fran and things only got better. I was planning to move to Salk Lake City when I was done with my nanny job, which was ending right about that time, it worked out perfect. We had so much in common and got along swimmingly. We became boyfriend & girlfriend officially and dated for a few months. Everything was going great…or so I thought. He pretty much blindsided me one day when he said, “I think we need to break up.”

I was devastated.

I went over every moment in our relationship 1000 times, where had it gone wrong? Why hadn’t I seen this coming? What could I do to change his mind!?

Generally I am pretty good at coping. If I don’t get something I want I can convince myself pretty easily that it really wasn’t so great in the first place.
Nick was a huge exception to this. He was such a great person. I just couldn’t figure out a way to believe that my life could be better without him in it.

I always tell people who are trying to get over a breakup to “fake it ’till you make it.” The only way I could get over him was to pretend I already was.  Eventually I lost hope that he would magically change his mind and was finally able to move on.

About a year later I started dating another guy and we ended up getting married. A couple of years after that Christian was born.  Sadly, it was an incredibly unhealthy relationship and I knew as soon as I had Christian I did not want him to live like that. As hard as it was I knew what I needed to do. When he was just a couple months old, I became a single mother.

For a long time I pretty much hid out at my parents house. They were wonderful and so helpful with Christian and for the first time in a long time, I felt happy and safe. I was pretty sure I’d never date again. I never wanted to be with someone who didn’t love that little boy like I did and I didn’t know if finding someone who did was even possible. On top of that it felt like dating was such a drastic conflict of interest with being the mother of a baby. I was breast feeding for heavens sake!

Thank goodness for my blog followers. I put all of my extra energy and thoughts into blogging and even though I never talked about what I was going through, every comment and every new friend made me feel like I had a purpose (outside of 24/7 colic patrol) and made me feel like a normal person. I really don’t know what Id have done without you guys.

Meanwhile guess who ran across my blog? Nick.
He was single, living in St. George and in addition to playing golf professionally, he was starting to get into a multilevel marketing healthy chocolate company. He thought I might be interested in the chocolate and maybe blog about it so he gave me a call and see if I was interested. I wasn’t and didn’t but we talked and caught up for a while. When he found out I was divorced he got so awkward. I assume he was thinking about all those years he regretted dumping me and knew I was the best girlfriend ever and he’d never find another girl quite like me. I’m sure that’s what it was:)

It took a few months but we started dating again. (I had to give him the cold shoulder for a while, ya know?:)

I found out he was still the same guy that I loved and looked up to. Only better. It didn’t take long for us to become best friends again.
I knew he loved Christian like I did one night when he put him to bed. He had been pretty fussy and Nick had been with us all day and yet within a few minutes of him being asleep he pulled out his phone to pour over photos of him. He was in deep:)

About a year later he took me back to San Francisco and asked me to marry him.

There were so many times along the way that I thought my life was damaged beyond repair. SO many days that I felt hopeless about my future.

I knew that my life was not a fairytale and I was not a princess…

but on a sunny day in September in a big white castle, Nick convinced me otherwise.

    • Wendy, Thank you so much! Everyone seems to be wondering the same thing:) Trust me I did my fair share of wondering myself! I have grilled him about it a hundred times. His explanation is that he wasn’t mature enough for a serious healthy relationship like ours. He still needed some time to date around and realize what he really wanted. Plus, I had to sweeten the deal with a little adorable cherub:)

      • Melissa , 11 years ago I left an ex I was with for 13 years. I was 18 when we met. We had 4 beautiful children. When I decided to leave the kids were 11, 5, 4, and 3. You are strong, stronger than u think. A year later I met the man of my dreams and we’ve been together 10 years now and had another little one 3 years ago. You will find happiness again.   15. Your story is a little like mine. My husband and I dated for years and then he dumped me…on my birthday!! I was devistated! It took me a long time to get over it and in the mean time I hung out with my girlfriends, got a new hair do, bought some new clothes and acted like I was having the time of my life. I even chose a college that was four hours away to remove myself from him. A couple years later, his mom sent me flowers when I was taking my college finals and asked if I would please talk to her son again (so sweet). How could I not? After playing coy for a while we went on a date to catch up. We have been together ever since and he is the most fantastic husband a girl could ask for. The point is, sometimes even if you think you are at an all time low your attitude (or wonderful acting skills) can help you to get through. If you force yourself into good and happy habits, soon your mood and outlook will follow and things will fall into place. Who knows why things work out the way they do, its all in God’s plan and set-backs only make us stronger people. Thank you so much for sharing your story. You really do make a difference.   16. I love this post. Its so weird but after reading your story, I find you even more beautiful! Maybe its seeing your bravery in the choice to leave an unhealthy relationship and then raise your son on your own. Then you created your own blog and gave Nick the cold shoulder…for a bit. Classy move. My favorite part, is that Nick realized you were the one and came back to marry you!

  17. Love your story! You seem so much more relatable now. A little vulnerability goes a long way! As a side note, have you ever read the book “The Mass Market Woman”? It deals with women’s body image issues better than any other book I’ve come across. I really think its a great book and feel that it could help women a lot. My biggest hope would be that you would read it and share some of its messages with other women! Because I know you care about inner and outer beauty. I got my copy used on amazon for a few dollars. Then I bought two more to loan out!

For both you and Christian ( btw he is the cutest baby ever.) :) My husband and I met at the ages of 15 and 16, and even though the road hasn’t been easy or perfect or fairy tale like at all, (baby at 17, married at 19) we have now been together 22 years and married for 19. I think thorough the hardships you learn so much about yourself and your partner and you learn to appreciate them more after you come out of the hardship on the other side.     • You don’t know me, but I want to say this: Leaving an unhealthy miserable relationship will NOT harm your children, but show them the need to be strong and do what’s best and right for themselves. Would you want her to stay in the same situation because she was scared? Be strong FOR her. You can do it.

    I found myself in a relationship that was…okay. I could have seen myself marrying him and that would have been that. BUT I could never stop thinking about the guy I had dated 4 years prior. Once me and that guy found our way back to one another…we were engaged within 6 months:) We’ve now been married for over a year and have a beautiful 11mth old baby boy!! I never knew happiness like this and when I look back…I imagine I would have settled. I didn’t realize what real happiness was until my husband:)

  49. That’s a great story! I’m guessing you have a reason for not telling why he dumped you in the first place, but I too am dying to know! He must have just been scared of how much he loved you, because you seem like such an amazing lady. ;)

    I like to share my best friend’s love story for people who need hope: My best friend was dating a guy who was really not right for her. She became pregnant and the guy basically bolted and wanted to sign away all of his parental rights. When she was eight months pregnant, she was invited to a wedding and asked a guy friend to go with her. While they were there, he got a little tipsy and started telling her how he was in love with her and wished that the baby was his. They got married 3 weeks later and are still together today, six years later. You never know when the right person will find you.

  80. As soon as I discovered your blog, I instantly knew I was going to love everything you post. And i truly have. Beautiful, busy, a mom just like myself, yet you still find time to be you. But this post, I absolutely adore. And i never do this, but i just have to comment. You are just so inspirational, & it seems like you really had some tough times, yet you seem like the happiest, most positive person. My now husband also dumped me while we were dating, & it really hurt me & I’ve had a tough time dealing with the why’s, but we are now happier than ever & just reading this post reminded me that sometimes people hurt the people they love, but everything works out for the best, even if it wasnt exactly how you pictured it. I was a single mom for a while too, and got remarried at 26 with 3 boys to a man who also had 3 kids! Talk about crazy :) We just had our own baby boy last March!
