A Love Story

Nick and I met about 7 years ago.  Typical boy meets girl, they fall in love and then…he dumped me.

I guess I’m getting a little ahead of myself.
It all started with this photo:


I was living in San Francisco but visiting my hometown (St. George UT) for my little sister’s wedding when I went to lunch with a good friend. On our way out of her office we stopped to talk to her coworker, Bevan. He said he had a son named Nick, who was playing golf at BYU (about 3 hours away) and swore that if he sent a photo of me he’d be here in a hot minute to take me on a date. So I awkwardly posed for a photo and didn’t really think much of it afterward. Apparently, Nick didn’t either because he ever showed up.

Although, a few weeks later I received this email:

I know emails from complete strangers are a little creepy, but I wanted to make sure it was ok that I was given your email address.  Im sorry if my Dad weirded you out a little…. I can’t believe he made you pose for a pic….. gotta love parents.  So I have your email and now you have mine.  I just wanted send a quick message to say hello and…… to see if you really exist…  So email me back sometime, I think it would be cool to talk some, either internet or phone or whatever.  I look forward to hearing from you.

From then on were pretty much inseparable (by phone of course) if we weren’t talking we were texting. A million questions, conversations and stories.

I loved how easy he was to talk to. I loved that he seemed genuine. I loved his understated charm.

We met in person a few weeks later when he was on a Golf trip to San Fran and things only got better. I was planning to move to Salk Lake City when I was done with my nanny job, which was ending right about that time, it worked out perfect. We had so much in common and got along swimmingly. We became boyfriend & girlfriend officially and dated for a few months. Everything was going great…or so I thought. He pretty much blindsided me one day when he said, “I think we need to break up.”

I was devastated.

I went over every moment in our relationship 1000 times, where had it gone wrong? Why hadn’t I seen this coming? What could I do to change his mind!?

Generally I am pretty good at coping. If I don’t get something I want I can convince myself pretty easily that it really wasn’t so great in the first place.
Nick was a huge exception to this. He was such a great person. I just couldn’t figure out a way to believe that my life could be better without him in it.

I always tell people who are trying to get over a breakup to “fake it ’till you make it.” The only way I could get over him was to pretend I already was.  Eventually I lost hope that he would magically change his mind and was finally able to move on.

About a year later I started dating another guy and we ended up getting married. A couple of years after that Christian was born.  Sadly, it was an incredibly unhealthy relationship and I knew as soon as I had Christian I did not want him to live like that. As hard as it was I knew what I needed to do. When he was just a couple months old, I became a single mother.

For a long time I pretty much hid out at my parents house. They were wonderful and so helpful with Christian and for the first time in a long time, I felt happy and safe. I was pretty sure I’d never date again. I never wanted to be with someone who didn’t love that little boy like I did and I didn’t know if finding someone who did was even possible. On top of that it felt like dating was such a drastic conflict of interest with being the mother of a baby. I was breast feeding for heavens sake!

Thank goodness for my blog followers. I put all of my extra energy and thoughts into blogging and even though I never talked about what I was going through, every comment and every new friend made me feel like I had a purpose (outside of 24/7 colic patrol) and made me feel like a normal person. I really don’t know what Id have done without you guys.

Meanwhile guess who ran across my blog? Nick.
He was single, living in St. George and in addition to playing golf professionally, he was starting to get into a multilevel marketing healthy chocolate company. He thought I might be interested in the chocolate and maybe blog about it so he gave me a call and see if I was interested. I wasn’t and didn’t but we talked and caught up for a while. When he found out I was divorced he got so awkward. I assume he was thinking about all those years he regretted dumping me and knew I was the best girlfriend ever and he’d never find another girl quite like me. I’m sure that’s what it was:)

It took a few months but we started dating again. (I had to give him the cold shoulder for a while, ya know?:)

I found out he was still the same guy that I loved and looked up to. Only better. It didn’t take long for us to become best friends again.
I knew he loved Christian like I did one night when he put him to bed. He had been pretty fussy and Nick had been with us all day and yet within a few minutes of him being asleep he pulled out his phone to pour over photos of him. He was in deep:)

About a year later he took me back to San Francisco and asked me to marry him.

There were so many times along the way that I thought my life was damaged beyond repair. SO many days that I felt hopeless about my future.

I knew that my life was not a fairytale and I was not a princess…

but on a sunny day in September in a big white castle, Nick convinced me otherwise.

      Wendy, Thank you so much! Everyone seems to be wondering the same thing:) Trust me I did my fair share of wondering myself! I have grilled him about it a hundred times. His explanation is that he wasn’t mature enough for a serious healthy relationship like ours. He still needed some time to date around and realize what he really wanted. Plus, I had to sweeten the deal with a little adorable cherub:)

    I’m not even sure where to begin with my comment. I follow ur blog religiously, think ur an amazing makeup artist, mom and just amazing person all around. Today you brightened my day by giving me sheer hope. I am in the midst of an ugly divorce and am a single mom of two young boys. I’m basically getting through each day smiling but wanting to cry. Thank you for sharing ur world with us, it helps to see the good guys always win 🙂

        Melissa , 11 years ago I left an ex I was with for 13 years. I was 18 when we met. We had 4 beautiful children. When I decided to leave the kids were 11, 5, 4, and 3. You are strong, stronger than u think. A year later I met the man of my dreams and we’ve been together 10 years now and had another little one 3 years ago. You will find happiness again.     This is a really touching story. Life throws us all curve balls, and what you highlighted, was that in those unknown times, we need to stay focused on our priorities… Be that motherhood, career, etc. I have always enjoyed your blog because you are talented and you make makeup and hair feel accessible to a mom here in Indiana!     Your story is a little like mine. My husband and I dated for years and then he dumped me…on my birthday!! I was devistated! It took me a long time to get over it and in the mean time I hung out with my girlfriends, got a new hair do, bought some new clothes and acted like I was having the time of my life. I even chose a college that was four hours away to remove myself from him. A couple years later, his mom sent me flowers when I was taking my college finals and asked if I would please talk to her son again (so sweet). How could I not? After playing coy for a while we went on a date to catch up. We have been together ever since and he is the most fantastic husband a girl could ask for. The point is, sometimes even if you think you are at an all time low your attitude (or wonderful acting skills) can help you to get through. If you force yourself into good and happy habits, soon your mood and outlook will follow and things will fall into place. Who knows why things work out the way they do, its all in God’s plan and set-backs only make us stronger people. Thank you so much for sharing your story. You really do make a difference. You are so funny and you put a smile on my face with every blog entry. You deserve all of the happiness life has to offer. Keep smiling 🙂

    I love this post. Its so weird but after reading your story, I find you even more beautiful! Maybe its seeing your bravery in the choice to leave an unhealthy relationship and then raise your son on your own. Then you created your own blog and gave Nick the cold shoulder…for a bit. Classy move. My favorite part, is that Nick realized you were the one and came back to marry you!

    Love your story! You seem so much more relatable now. A little vulnerability goes a long way! As a side note, have you ever read the book “The Mass Market Woman”? It deals with women’s body image issues better than any other book I’ve come across. I really think its a great book and feel that it could help women a lot. My biggest hope would be that you would read it and share some of its messages with other women! Because I know you care about inner and outer beauty. I got my copy used on amazon for a few dollars. Then I bought two more to loan out!
    I’ve been subscribed to your blog for several months. I love all your posts, but hope for more that tell your story!

    I can relate to this story (married and divorced young…also had met my second husband as a teenager, but didn’t remember him!!)!     Thank you for posting such a honest “real life” love story. At the moment I am going through a painful divorce, my family lives abroad and Im in Kansas. So there are days I feel completely alone- and am starting to believe that a real love story isnt in the books for me.     I love your story. You seem like such a grounded, honest, lovely woman and such a good Mommy. I’m so happy you have found your happy ending. For both you and Christian ( btw he is the cutest baby ever.) 🙂 My husband and I met at the ages of 15 and 16, and even though the road hasn’t been easy or perfect or fairy tale like at all, (baby at 17, married at 19) we have now been together 22 years and married for 19. I think thorough the hardships you learn so much about yourself and your partner and you learn to appreciate them more after you come out of the hardship on the other side.     Wow. I follow your blog and believe I have read every post on here. This was such a lovely story and you told it beautifully. You’re such a gorgeous woman and seem like such a good kind hearted person that it’s hard to believe something like that could happen to you. It seems like you got your fairytale ending after all though in the end, and I believe you deserve it :-). I’m kind of going through relationship problems right now and your post helped give me comfort and really made me think about things. P.S. You’re husband reminds me of Luke Bryan but with darker hair 😀 lol…I love all your posts and you have such heart in whatever you write but I thought you mentioned at some point skiing a post on makeup for different eye shapes. Could you please do that soon?? 🙂 Just thought it up right now but doing some prom makeup looks might be good for the youngin’ also 😛 lol.

    I absolutely love this – THIS is what little girls need to be told when they’re young. No need for a big strong hunk of a man to come save you – save yourself first and the rest will follow.     Ditto to all the other comments: It’s so incredibly scary when your marriage is failing, you feel like your whole world is just crumbling into ruin. Reading your story gives me some hope that maybe it is possible to get out of a bad situation, and that there can be happiness after the pain. I have a kid too, and the most terrifying prospect of getting out is my fear that it will wreck her life. I’m glad that good things have happened for you, keep up the good work.       You don’t know me, but I want to say this: Leaving an unhealthy miserable relationship will NOT harm your children, but show them the need to be strong and do what’s best and right for themselves. Would you want her to stay in the same situation because she was scared? Be strong FOR her. You can do it.

    This is such a sweet story and I couldn’t help but tear up!
    I found myself in a relationship that was…okay. I could have seen myself marrying him and that would have been that. BUT I could never stop thinking about the guy I had dated 4 years prior. Once me and that guy found our way back to one another…we were engaged within 6 months:) We’ve now been married for over a year and have a beautiful 11mth old baby boy!! I never knew happiness like this and when I look back…I imagine I would have settled. I didn’t realize what real happiness was until my husband:)

    Cara you are AMAZING… i loved you and your blog before but now i have a whole new respect for you… i’m the mother of a little boy as well and cannot imagine how hard it must have been to leave, or how amazing it must feel to give him a real dad to look up to 🙂 Nick is crazy for ever leaving but in the end all is right

    Ah Cara, this is so cute! I love your story, it gives me hope. Seriously, the beginning of your story sounds just like what is going on in my life. I thought everything was great in my relationship, but all of a sudden he broke up with me. I felt like we were perfect for each other. 🙁 I was pretty shocked at how my story sounds just like yours did in the beginning of it. It gives me hope. 🙂

    That’s a great story! I’m guessing you have a reason for not telling why he dumped you in the first place, but I too am dying to know! He must have just been scared of how much he loved you, because you seem like such an amazing lady. 😉

    I like to share my best friend’s love story for people who need hope: My best friend was dating a guy who was really not right for her. She became pregnant and the guy basically bolted and wanted to sign away all of his parental rights. When she was eight months pregnant, she was invited to a wedding and asked a guy friend to go with her. While they were there, he got a little tipsy and started telling her how he was in love with her and wished that the baby was his. They got married 3 weeks later and are still together today, six years later. You never know when the right person will find you.

    Oh my, what a story! I follow your blog everyday and have never commented. But I just have to comment today! Thank you for sharing this so very real side of yourself. I have been married twice with one son from each marriage. My husband so loves my first son and treats him like his own! It is the best feeling knowing that the man you love loves your child as much as you do.

    Wow, thank YOU for being so honest! I only stumbled upon your blog a few months ago, but it’s the one and only blog I subscribe to 🙂 From those pictures, you do look like the princess with the fairy tale; a healthy reminder to never judge. We never know someone’s full story. Anyway, I am so happy you and Christian got the happy ending with Nick, and that he realized what a gem you are. All you had to do was take the scenic route :))

    i thought i met the man of my dreams at 18.. he was/has been my best friend for 8 years.. but after almost 4 years of marriage, we are calling it quits. i know i am only 25 and have my whole life ahead of me, but i’m sitting here feeling like i’ll never meet anyone again, ever. this is a wonderful, inspiring story. thank you so much for sharing!

    Thank you for sharing some of your story. I had to leave a very abusive husband when my daughter was under a year old and it has been an incredibly long journey. I hope one day I can believe in love again. Your story gives me hope!

    As soon as I discovered your blog, I instantly knew I was going to love everything you post. And i truly have. Beautiful, busy, a mom just like myself, yet you still find time to be you. But this post, I absolutely adore. And i never do this, but i just have to comment. You are just so inspirational, & it seems like you really had some tough times, yet you seem like the happiest, most positive person. My now husband also dumped me while we were dating, & it really hurt me & I’ve had a tough time dealing with the why’s, but we are now happier than ever & just reading this post reminded me that sometimes people hurt the people they love, but everything works out for the best, even if it wasnt exactly how you pictured it. You three are truly a lovely family. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re inspiring a lot of people.

    Cara, I came across your blog during one of my many pinterest crazed nights and was impressed with your tips and tricks. It wasn’t until after I read this article that I made the decision to subscribe. My past and present is very similar to yours and it’s always refreshing to read about someone else’s journey through the good and the bad. It helps remind me that the fairy tale is in the eye of the beholder and not by the textbook’s definition. Great blog! I look forward to learning more from you with each post!

    I’m actually going through a breakup right now…my boyfriend of 4.5 years broke up with me last week. I am devastated. Do you have any tips for coping? Also, SO happy that you are finally happy now. Why did Nick break up with you the first time?

    Hi Cara,
    I just came across your blog and love it. I wanted to comment on this story because you gave me hope there are good guys out there, and that timing is everything. I am 30 and divorced. I was divorced at 26. Right after that, I met someone who I ended up getting into something unhealthy with and I am trying to recover from that. Thank you for sharing your story and giving me hope!

    This melted my heart, knowing such guys are still out there, but then you deserved someone like that. Every girl does. Read your other post about the letter too, that kind of summed up a broken heart for me. God bless you and your lovely family.     Hey Cara, love your story. Bevan had told us about how you guys met, but I remember last year (July 4th weekend) Nick couldn’t concentrate on his golf, he said is was because it was so hot in Indianapolis, but we know it was because of you. So happy we finally met. You are such an amazing person and we are so happy you are a part of our family. We also love playing with that little sweet boy. Love all three of you.

    I originally discovered your blog through Mandy’s makeover Monday. I was learning so much about makeup/beauty techniques that I had never tried before & trusted you, because, well, you are gorgeous on the outside so how could you not know what you’re talking about??? After reading this post led here after reading the one you posted most recently, I am learning just how gorgeous you are on the inside as well. That is the best kind of gorgeous to be! Insert cheesy cliches here: ie: Everything happens for a reason or God works in mysterious ways. Cliches I believe in whole-heartedly, btw! 😉

    I’ve been following your blog/Instagram/Pinterest for a while, and I just love it, and you! I feel like I know you… Didn’t know all this story though. I was a single mom for a while too, and got remarried at 26 with 3 boys to a man who also had 3 kids! Talk about crazy 🙂 We just had our own baby boy last March! I was married and divorced young, it was all over before I hit 30, and I know that it made me a stronger, better, happier person, as I expect it did to you too! I love a woman who has the courage to leave what isn’t working, even when it would be easier to stay.

    I have been reading your blog for a year now and never came across this story until today. I love this so much it brought me to tears.     I just came across your blog a few days ago and have been hooked ever since reading every story and watching every video. Before reading this story I thought “Yeah yeah she has the life everyone is envious of… but I’ll read it anyway wishing it was me.” Well it wasn’t a princess love story at all… it was soooo much better.     I’ve been a long time “fan” I’m calling myself that because I’ve followed you for a few years now, learned how to HAC because of you, am reordering your makeup line for a third time curretnly, and have loved watching your brand develop! So impressive where you’ve taken it. To be honest I have never commented on a blog, but I feel so inclined after reading your stories about you, your love story, testimony, and addiction experiences. I can’t tell you how many people I have told about your makeup, I am actually online tonight helping yet another sister in law order your HAC pack. So I guess I wanted you to know I wasn’t just passing through, but have “gotten to know you” in a creepy online stalking kind of way 😉 haha.     I was having issue with my boyfriend, he was always lying to me, keeping secrete, flirting around, i love him and wanted him to change but it got worst that he have to break up and left me heart broken, i was out of my mind, i wanted him back because i want to get married to him in feature, i could not fall in love again b’cos my heart still beat for him, i was lucky that my problem became history, i was able to find someone who could help me and it was [email protected] yahoo. com, i contacted him and fortunately he was able to bring my boyfriend back and my boyfriend is now a changed man and he is ready to marry me as soon as possible
