Makeup Products Tips & Tricks

Don’t lose your sparkle.

If Tiara taught us anything, it’s that, if you got sparkle, you gotsta let it shine.

So dump that winter matte finish foundation and put your gleam on.
I’ve been looking for the best possible glowing skin recipe.
Tried all the new buzzing products for glow and found my favorites.

How to get glowy natural looking foundation.

But before we get to all of that…

I wanted to talk about the Urban Decay BB Cream that I was excited to try a month or so ago.
I didn’t love it.
Actually took it back.
It’s not that it’s a bad product, it’s just that, I’m not a product junkie.
I don’t like to have a bunch of products that all do basically the same thing, they cost me too much money and the redundant ones never get used. Everything in my makeup case gets used or it goes back.
Anyway, it was good as a primer, but I have primer. It was no good for coverage. I didn’t notice it making my skin look different or better really…at least nothing noticeable
I wanted something that had more multitasking abilities so when I took it back (and if you have makeup you don’t like you should always take it back, complete waste not to) I tried to find something that fit the needs the UD BB didn’t. Boy, did I.
Stila’s Illuminating BB Cream is different than any I’ve tried. It’s gorgeous, lightweight, has just enough coverage to even me while still sheer enough to show my skin, SPF, claims to be good for you skin…the works.  I’m into it.

That is why it’s the lead role in my newest tutorial, but the supporting class ain’t bad either.

I think it has a fresh finish and a color that is very hard to find at the drugstore but I really want to know if I am off base on something….thoughts?

I just recently bought the bouncy blush in both Pink Frosting and Hot Tamale (Wasn’t sure which color I wanted to go with) I’ve only used the Fresh Pink color once but so far I liked it! The color was what I was hoping it would be and seemed to last through out the day! I purchased it at Ulta and the girl who sold it to me suggested I use my fingers to apply it rather than a brush but I love the way it looks on you when you apply it with a brush so I did half and half! I first put it on with my fingers to get it where I wanted it and start a base then I used a brush by RealTechniques and just a dust of powder blush to finsh it off and I though it turned out well!

The only BB cream I have used is Garnier bb cream, I like it but I have nothing to compare it to. After I’m done with it I want to try another one. I live in south Georgia, the land of humidity and heat, and I have combination skin, so those are the factors I have to count in.
Also, I have used the bouncy blush ever since it came out. I’ve applied it with my fingers as well as a brush. I love it! I don’t know why its getting bad reviews. That’s news to me.
And I have to say, your skin is absolutely gorgeous. You are blessed.

I love the bouncy blush as well. Before I read your blog, I carried it in my purse as a blush-on-the-go and applied it with my fingers. I was indifferent on the coverage, but loved the Fresh Pink color (I am dark blond, fair skinned). Once I saw your video, I applied it with a brush and LOVE the way it goes on!

Would you consider the Hard Candy Glow All The Way Luminizer Doll Face somewhat a highlighter as well? I currently use the Dream Lumi Highlighing Concealer and I dont really care for it. It tends to fade away very, very quickly and I wanted something more glowy like this!

Cara – Does this work for fair skin? There is only one color option, which concerns me a bit since I am pretty fair with pinkish undertones. BTW – Kudos to your choice of Bronzer for fair skin (Physician’s Formula – the compact with the cute heart blushes on the right side). That does work for me and isn’t too dark or dirty looking. Love it! Thanks:)

Love this look! Looks amazing on you, you are literally glowing!!! Tried the bouncy blush since you raved about it and it wasn’t for me. I didn’t like how it felt on my face and had trouble applying it (tried both with my fingers and with a brush). I never reach for it when I’m doing my blush. But thats the only product you’ve recommended that I had trouble with. I think its just based on preference since I prefer powder blushes.

I have a question for you. I use a BB cream (Dr. Jart black label detox) and then use bare minerals powder foundation on top as a concealer/to set my makeup and my skin looks amazing after applying the makeup, but a few hours later it becomes chalky and cakey and like I’m wearing a ton of makeup, which isn’t true. I’ve been using a hydramist from dermatological to try to help make it look more natural but it doesn’t really help. I also tried using smash box liquid foundation instead of the bare minerals powder thinking the powder might be the problem but that didn’t help and neither did omitting the BB cream and just using smash box or just using the bare minerals! I also use a skin primer sometimes which hasn’t helped. Do you have any idea what I could be doing wrong? I use a moisturizer and my face never seems dry and gets almost greasy if I use too much. Do you have any foundation or concealer recommendations that won’t look caked on, or something I can use to help look more natural? Thank you so much for your help, I absolutely love your blog!

I have the same problem and I just bought the MAC face and body and really like it! Its very light weight though so if you don’t want something that sheer. Check out some tutorials on youtube. Plus the bottle is 4 oz compared to most 1oz bottles so you get a big size for like 32 dollars!

I bought the Bouncy blush in Fresh Pink. It’s okay. I don’t love it on me though. My new favorite is Stila’s Custom Color Blush. It looks really harsh and a hot pink in the container but adjusts to your pH on your skin. It layers well and after 5 minutes or so of being on your skin, it looks perfect! Like you are naturally blushing. I recommend 🙂

I would love to try a BB cream but I don’t have the best skin for it. I’m combination on the oily side, I still breakout from time to time and suffer from red cheeks (whatever may be causing that….) so I need coverage. I do still want to look dewy so I may try a liquid foundation. I currently use Benefit Flawless and love that but that gives a matte look. Great feel though and cover up. Speaking of Benefit, have you tried the Eye Bright? It’s a miracle and lasts all day! I couldn’t go a day without it!

Can you give some suggestions on applying cream cheek tints? I either looking like I have baby doll cheeks (totally 80’s streaks or circles) or I don’t really see it at all… At what step do you apply it and how do you make it look so natural? Maybe that is the issue with the Bouncy Blush – user errors… Secondary to application – do you ever feel like it blocks your pores? Some of the thicker, more lip balmy types of cheek tint make me nervous – I don’t want to break out.

I have used Bare Minerals for years, but have been trying liquid foundation lately. No matter how much I blend, my make up ends up looking cakey and uneven. The only thing that has given me an even foundation is the powder foundation, but at my age, is starting to settle into my facial lines! Even if I am careful with thin layers of everything, I end up highly caked up around eyes and nose/forehead/eyebrow area. I am using the Clinique stay matte liquid foundation, Benefit Porefessional under it all, mineral veil to set everything, the Clinique concealer that you use… HELP!!! I am so excited about HAC’ing, but everything is just looking BAD!!!!

Also, I got the Watt’s Up in the birthday gift from Sephora…I LOVE IT, but it just adds to the caked up layers look at this point!!! 🙁 Apparently, I am in desperate need of assistance….. 🙂

    Hi All,
I just wanted to point out that if you belong to the Sephora mailing list they are giving away the Benefit Watts Up highlighter as a sample for your birthday this year. Im from Canada and I’m not sure if that’s the case in all countries but I just got mine in January 🙂

Does the Stila beauty balm come in different colors or just a generic one?

I am LOVING the bounch blush from Maybelline! And I’m also wanting to know what brush you are using to apply the bronzer. It looks like the perfect bronzing brush that I need! I also think that the color of your hair now makes you really glow even more!

I have the bouncy blush in pretty peach or something.. the pinky peach anyway and LOVE it! I always put it on with my fingers and apply a little heavy and then set it with a sheer finishing powder and its perfect!

I love the dream bouncy blush. I bought it specifically because you had such great color on your cheeks without it being a “bam” of pink. I use the Fresh Pink and it looks great for everyday wear. In fact, it’s almost always sold out at the one store I shop at. I did buy the Pink Frosting for a bit more color for going out in the evenings. Just a little more color. I apply it with a stiff blush brush. I stipple it up my cheek and then blend it using the same brush. It looks way better than the $30 Stila blush I was using (worked nice, but the rubbed off easily and was WAY to expensive).

I LOVE the dream bouncy blushes. I saw you use it in one of your tutorials and I got 2, one in pink and one in peach. I always use a brush too, but what I love about them is that they are sheer so they add just a hint of color (and you don’t end up looking like a drag queen with too much rouge) and it’s SUPER easy to blend. I use these WAY more than my clinique blush for sure.

OK I purchased the the Stay All Day HD Illuminating Beauty Balm online, following your recommendation. I’ve looked at purchasing the Dream Bouncy Blush but it’s a mission to find in Australia. Loving your blog and tutorials, you make things simple for everyone 🙂

I have bought the Dream Bouncy Blush and was not impressed at all 🙁 it makes my already dry skin super dry and doesn’t blend well… However, I mix a little bit of of my MAC face and body foundation and it gives it just the moisturizer it needs and gives me a nice hint of color. I will try it with a brush though, maybe that could be the problem too 🙂

The Stila balm directions recommend re-applying every 2 hours. Is this something that can be used all day and replace a tinted moisturizer or foundation? Or is it just cute and dewy for a few hours?

I love how you and your readers have taken over the makeup section of amazon! When you click on any product, the “customers also bought” section is full of products you have suggested. 🙂 It actually makes shopping after reading your blog very easy! All of the products are right there. Haha.

LOVE bouncy blush! I have used it ever since you first recommended it…wouldn’t it be great to have every shade?! a couple weeks ago there was a lonely one at the discount store. Of all make-up purchases, buying a new bouncy blush makes me feel the happiest. Thank you for sharing them with us. Beautiful and practically priced.
