Product Picks!

My latest favorite beauty products!

1. Sinful Colors Nail Polish in 920 (what a waste of a color name, I’ll call it – Pink Lightning)
I was scouring Walgreens the other day for a cute nail polish. After about 10 minutes, which felt more like 30 minutes because I was wrestling wide eyed makeup demolishing toddler during my search I figured none were really speaking to me and grabbed a pale boring pink. As I was checking out I saw this little diamond, it was love at first site. Oh, and it’s $0.95.
(a lot of you asked what color nail polish I was wearing in my latest vid, THIS IS IT!)

2. Naked Skin Healthy Balm
Urban Decay JUST came out with this beauty balm and I am kind of excited about it for spring because it is VERY lightweight (just barely any coverage) and touts more proven skin benefits than most I have seen. Perfect product to use under your HAC. I’ll pay very close attention to my skin in the next few weeks and report to you. Some of the things they claim are:

In a clinical study, immediately after use:
-65% of participants’ complexion looked significantly improved
-59% of participants’ skin looked significantly lifted
-68% of participants’ skin hydration improved significantly

After eight weeks of use:
-93% of participants had significantly firmer, more lifted skin
-90% had significantly more radiant skin
-84% had a significant improvement in fine lines
-Over 84% had significantly smoother and more hydrated skin

WARNING: I saw that this was getting very mixed reviews. I think it’s important to know that this is very light coverage and may not work for very fair skin. In fact if in doubt at all, hang tight and I will let you know what I think once I have given it some time to work.

3.Tomas Self Tanning Spray HERE (or get it at Sally Beauty)
A reader turned me on to this. I still prefer (as always) Sun Labs for my body and face regularly but I LOVE having a little airbrush spray on hand for when my face and neck need a little more color in a hurry. This goes on as a very olive glow and isn’t at all orangy.
Some of you may be wondering about self tanner VS the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs I mentioned a few weeks ago so here it is: Sally’s stuff is makeup so it makes your skin look flawless and smooth in addition to adding color. Tanner does not cover your skin it colors it, but it is a more natural look that sally’s and it lasts longer.

4.Maybelline Color Whipsers
I am SO excited to tell you about these! I want to buy every single one but the 3 I have gotten my hands on are killing it. They go on so soft and silky and come in colors I have been looking for EVERYWHERE for years! My very favorite so far is Petal Rebel HERE, which is the PERFECT pink:

THe PERFECT pink lipstick!

The other two colors are OH LA LILAC HERE (a stunning subtle purple) and Bare to be Bold (a very very pretty nude)

5. Batiste Dry Shampoo for Dark Brown or Brown Hair HERE
This is the ONLY dry shampoo I have found for darker hair! (not counting Bumble & Bumble because $36 dollars is WAY more than I can bare for a small bottle of hair powder!)
It is a great product and it is darker than the usual white dust that comes squiring out of the other bottles but I’ll warn you now, it isn’t super dark either. It’s no Bumble and Bumble but it’s good stuff and I was really excited that the brunettes got one of their own for once! Batiste has a whole line of other flavors too, a bunch of yummy smells and one for the blondies! I honestly want to try them all!

I absolutely adore your blog and everything else I follow you on! I look forward to reading your posts and watching the videos. I have gotten so many new tricks and products you recommened to try. One of your hair tutorials and make up tutorials inspired me for my wedding day. You gave me the confidence to do it all myself especially since we went to the Bahamas and I didnt have a “go to” I was comfortable with or willing to pay $300 bucks for. I am super excited about trying on those lipsticks now and totally in love with the sinful nail colors. I just two the other day…..”pink forever” and “soul mate”. Both are pinks! I love self tanners…… How would you rank Loreal sublime mist spray and st.tropoz to the two you wrote about? I would love to know if you think they are equal, worse or better.

Thanks again for all you do!

Thank you so much Christy! I am so glad you were able to look stunning at your wedding with your skills alone! As far as self tanners go I think the loreal sublime is a really pretty one but I am fairly olive so it is a touch warm for my and I am super sensitive the that “tanner” smell so I would probably pick Tomas over it and I actually posted about St. Tropez a while back, I really like it, it’s definitely a pretty color and a quality product but I still prefer the sun labs one! Sun labs has no tanner smell and easier to blend. They are pretty comparable in price so maybe next time you are out you could give these ones a try and see what you think!? Let me know! Happy monday!

Yay! Just bought petal rebel after perusing the make up aisle the other day (child-less…heaven). Thought maybe it was a mistake once i got it home so I haven’t tried it yet. Will do it today and wear proudly while I clean pulverized goldfish off the floor of my car.

Thanks Laura! OK the dumb thing about lipstick (especially sheer ones) is that they tend to look slightly different on every lip because our natural lip colors are all so different! I didn’t add anything to this lip color but mine are very pale naturally though, so I would try neutralizing your lips first by using a little concealer or foundation blended into your lips. Let me know how it works!

Oh yeah, LOVE Batiste! You can get it in TJ Maxx every once in awhile for $6. Ulta sells for ~$10. Not sure what Walgreens price is. So if you see a can at TJ, snag it because it’s a great buy.

Hi Yajaira, what do you mean by your face looking damaged? I only ask because if I know exactly what you haven’t liked in the past I can figure out what to change..

    Hi Cara!
A friend sent me to your blog and videos .
Ill have to crown her queen genius later.

In the meantime I just bought some MAC studio fix and am trying to decide on a BB creme.
You say Urban Decay is light coverage. How would that compare to MACS BB?
    To silicone or not silicone?
Also I don’t care for finishing powder I feel like it settles in wrinkles.
Is there another way to set makeup not using powder?
Have you heard of / or tried Dimitri James Skinn Plasma?

My skin is very red on my face and I just recently bought a Benefit foundation called “Play Stick”; here is a link to it :

I find the best application is when applied with a foundation brush. It looks very natural, and covers my redness; I don’t have to use powder with it even though I have an oily T-zone. This may work for you as well with the scarring. If you live near Sephora, they carry it and worst case scenario – you can return it 🙂 Hope this helps!

I love your blog and I especially loved these product reviews! So question….I love using aerosol spray tans, but I have yet to find the perfect brand. How did the Toma’s spray compare to the Fake Bake spray that you mentioned in another post? Also when you use Sun Labs, you use it on your face too? Do they have a special lotion for the face or do you just use the same lotion you use for your body? Thanks for the help!

I live all the way in the Fiji Islands and I love love love your blog. Round face looks so much nicer with HACing, it’s genius. While it’s gorgeous and sunshiny here aLl the time the downside is we don’t have Sephora and other makeup shops. Do you know any that deliver internationally?

    Hi Cara,

I love your blog and am so grateful for all that you share with us! I have a question for you… Where I live it is super insanely dry and my skin is definitely dry. I do everything I can as far as moisturizing and exfoliating but when I put on foundation or a BB cream, you can see the dry texture of my skin underneath and it looks flakey and gross. Even with a primer this happens. Do you or any other readers have some ideas for me? I love to wear a little foundation or a BB cream to even out my skin tone but the texture ends up making me usually go bare.

    Thanks for all your help!!!

Hillary, have you ever tried a hydrating clay mask? Gently exfoliate your skin first and then put on the mask as directed. You can get them at Target or Walgreens. Not too expensive and I have seen some you can make at home. Might seem counter intuitive to put oil on your face, but there are some kinds that are great for dry skin and won’t clog pores. Also, make sure you aren’t using astringent or anything with alcohol in it that will further dry out your skin. And drink LOTS of water. I know I don’t get enough in the winter. 🙂 Hope this helps even a little!

Cara, I have fairly normal skin, but when I wear foundation it gets shiny in what seems like minutes. How can I prevent this? Is there a foundation you would recommend? Thanks for any suggestions!

    Hi Cara!
I just discovered your blog last night (via Pinterest, of course) and I have to say I love it. I’m not a huge make-up person (foundation, bronzer, blush, eye liner, and mascara for me! I’ll throw on lip gloss for special events), but you make me want to branch out! I like to look a little more natural, but have my eyes pop (without looking like I’m wearing a ton of eye make-up). so I’ve been perusing your posts. Any suggestions on that? Also, I have a shaky hand, so I have a really hard time staying on the lash line and keeping my line thin!
I agree with you: why would anyone in the world want to hide their freckles? I love mine! (And glad you think those people are crazy too.) Anyhow, I think you’re a total doll. Thanks for showing us newbies what’s what! (Seriously… total newb here.)

I’m definitely interested in a review of the UD makeup. I just started using Benefit’s Hello Flawless and I love it, but I would really love something that also firmed my skin. Since I use foundation at least 5 times a week, I know I’d get use out of it. Can you only by the Batiste online or can you find it in stores like Target or Ulta? BTW, I’m a new follower sent from Kristen at Love, Lipstick and Pearls!

Okay I read this today and picked up color whisper in lust for blush (a pinky brown) and pin up peach (pretty coral) together they create the most beautiful hue!! I love the texture as well but it doesn’t seem to stay put for very long any tricks on keeping the color and texture but having it last a bit longer? I’m thinking a lip liner of course but don’t want to ruin the color combo or feel:)

LOVE your blog and positivity!! Just stumbled across another dry shampoo that is wonderful for dark hair (and doesn’t leave dark stuff under your nails if you happen to scratch your head after using Batiste!) It’s Marc Anthony 2nd day clear dry shampoo. It’s amazing and is truly clear- no white stuff at all and gives great volume and clean looking hair!

    Hi Cara,
Any updates on the UD BB cream? I’m interested in trying out the whole BB thing and have been reading a lot of reviews. Most products seem to be tinted moisturizers, heavy creams or simply foundation with primer already mixed in. Whoop-dee-do. I feel I could create such a product myself. Do you have any experience with making your own moisture + primer + foundation mixture prior to application? Or are BB creams truly heaven sent? I am going to be traveling for spring break and want to know if a BB will save me some space in my makeup bag!
