Actually, there IS an Arizona

(Just in case anyone remembers that song)
I know this because, I just moved here!
It was kind of sudden and might just be for the winter..we aren’t sure yet.
I haven’t told hardly anyone yet…I think because
there was this one time I was supposedly moving…. for like two years, so I learned not to cry wolf until it’s really happening.
This time it REALLY happened really fast though, so… That’s my excuse.

Here is what I love so far:
I live within walking distance to a Sephora. (ok, so it would be a very long, very strenuous walk but I’d get there!) I can tell I am going to love it too, the employees are totally delightful… as usual.
The weather is GORGEOUS.
Nick loves it here, and he can do his golf tournaments without having to leave town and become my Skype husband.
The people here are pretty great, I have even met some of my blog babes, which is fabulous!

Here is what I am undecided on:
Of course, I miss my family and friends.
Christian misses his grandparents and I miss Christian spending Friday night with his grandparents…
The weather is GORGEOUS
Um did Arizona forget it’s CHRISTMAS!? I can’t even get away with a light sweater! My winter wardrobe is a total bust. So I am going to have to try extra hard to make my apartment feel Christmas-y and be really jealous of all of you in seasoned locations. Go ahead, cuddle up to your fire places with your adorable chunky sweaters and knee high boots sipping on your perfectly marshmallowed hot chocolate. Come mid-January though, I won’t be at all jealous, I’ll be basking.

Anyway, I live in North Scottsdale: what is fun here that Christian will love? Or that I will love? Or anything else you know about this area?  I would love any info you got!

PS Tomorrow is the VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW!!!!!!!
You know i’ll be celebrating with a post in it’s honor. I hope you’ll join me!

  2. Welcome to Arizona!!!! Have you been to Sedona? You have to check it out!!! You will love it!. There are a ton of places to eat, you can hike and even swim!. If you don’t want drive to Sedona, there are a ton of things to do here in the city! You have to experience some of the latin culture! There is a small restaurant called Barrio cafe that has amazing Mexican inspired cuisine!!. Peppins is a Spanish restaurant in old town Scottsdale that offers Flamenco performances on the weekends!!!. Welcome and enjoy AZ! You will love it here, just make you stock up on cute flip flops and thank tops! ; )

  3. Welcome to Arizona!

I don’t know if your little guy likes trains..my 3 year old is obsessed…I like to take him to the Mccormick-Stillman Train Park, it’s about 10 minutes from North Scottsdale. You can have a fun afternoon there. :) Also, I work weekends at the Ulta in North Scottsdale (Scottsdale Rd & Frank LLoyd Wright) And we always have different events there with the all the vendors. You should come by sometime. :)
I hope you enjoy it here!

  4. Oh….P.S. I sell a TON of the LORAC PRO palettes. I tell them it’s a secret gem, (which it is!) since everyone usually goes straight for the Urban Decay Naked palette…and everytime I do I write down your blog address for them since you have a such great looks using that palette…and lots of girls have come back saying your videos are a great help!

  5. Um, hello!!!! Come visit me and hang out with me!! We live in AZ too!!!! I’d love to meet you! There are a ton of great things to do here. Take your son to the Children’s Museum and also Zoo Lights! Enjoy your new home!

  6. Welcome! I’m a multi generation “desert rat” I live in Tucson. The weather during the “fall/winter” months are amazing but, you will miss the seasons. I’ve never had seasons and I miss em (is that even possible) one word of advice… Invest in good lotion, this place will dry you out like no other… And water you can never have too much here. Once again welcome!

  7. No way! That is fantastic, maybe my dream of getting in person beauty lessons from you could actual come true! The Phoenix Children’s muesum is exceptional. Hint: the libraries have cultural passes that you can check out and use to do local attraction for free. I am a nanny in Scottsdale and am a new Arizona resident also. Congrats on the move. I know a great eyebrow lady should you need a recommend :)

  8. I feel like a celebrity has moved into the neighborhood. Lucky us! Love your blog and I totally agree about Christmas in Az. Most days you will find me in a chunky sweater and tights, sweating and I don’t even care. When I jump in the car, I turn the AC to full blast. My hubby thinks I am crazy…but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do. Welcome to the neighborhood…

  9. HI, I just found your site yesterday, randomly from pinterest. I love it! Love all your videos…HAC where have you been all my life?!
I live in AZ too, in Tempe. There are lots of fun family things here. And you came at a good time of year!
I recommend the Zoo for sure, Children’s museum, Arizona Museum for Youth and the Natural History museum-both in Mesa. They are really great for little ones. The Train park is right near you. Also Papago park and Hole in the Rock, which is near the zoo.
You must go see the Mesa Temple lights as well. NOt on the same scale as Temple Square, but still really good and so pretty. And they have mini-concerts every night at 7 pm as part of the display.
I am not from AZ but I’ve come to love it here. (even though I miss the seasons…) But the sun is great, and you do acclimate after a while. Promise.

    • Just thought I’d add that the local library has ‘culture passes’ for free for any of the museums and such in the valley. They can get a bit pricey. But get a library card and ask them about it. Especially if you won’t be here a year and you don’t want a year membership to a particular spot.

  10. Oh how I LOVE Arizona!! I live in Illinois, but we are getting ready to vacation in Cave Creek (not too far from you)! It is such a lovely state, and ALL of the people there are amazingly friendly! Scottsdale’s Ulta and Nordstrom Rack are pretty fab too! And check out My Sister’s closet… And upscale second hand shop. You’ll LOVE it!!

  11. Ooh I am jealous! I’ve lived in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Florida, and New Mexico and Arizona is definitely my favorite of them all. I think someone mentioned McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park in Scottsdale, which my son enjoyed even when he was barely a year old (but would enjoy much more now).

  12. I lived in Mesa for a few years and loved it. Loved the people, the weather and the endless activities. The Scottsdale train is a must for Christian, the museum for youth was exceptional in Mesa and Zoolights plus the Temple lights is awesome! Scottsdale was one of my favorite places to go. you will love it!

  13. We live in Houston and have the same issues with Christmas time weather. A few times we have put on PJs, cranked up the AC, and snuggled up to watch Christmas movies. It is really awesome if it is an overcast day, otherwise do it at night so you can’t see the sun. If the house is chilly it almost feels like winter :)

  14. YAY!! I have been following you for a while since i stumbled upon your long hair care routine on pinterest. Thats so awesome that you live here now, and that it looks like you’ll be working at Sephora? If its the one at fashion square mall, then i’ll have to stop by more often and get your help on color matching for foundations and products and stuff. Welcome to Arizona!

  15. Welcome to Arizona! I was hoping you were a little closer to Gilbert but oh well. I just had a blast at our mall (Sephora included) spending a flippin’ fortune to get the perfect HAC face. I haven’t had that much fun shopping in a long time and I love the results. Enjoy your sunny Christmas!

  16. I live in ARIZONA!! I live up in Prescott Valley it is a small town about 1 hour and 45 minutes north of Phoenix but it is titled the “Christmas Town” of Arizona, downtown Prescott has Christmas lights to die for plus in Prescott Valley there is a wonderful drive through Christmas Light Show, I was pretty impressed. Anywho just moved her from North Carolina in July and I loveeee it! Hope you love it too! <3

  17. Ahhhhh I know what you mean about the winter wardrobe being a bust! I moved to Hawaii and I must say after a year of perfectly warm, sunny, flawless weather…. I’m over it! Everyday is the same and I miss the variety! I love the emotions and changes that come with the 4 seasons. I love my senses being stimulated by the smells of spring and fall. I love really truly appreciating a beautiful day! Not even the amazing beaches here make it worth packing my boots, coats and sweaters into a box… Forever! Somedays I just want nothing but 2 full days of nothing but loud, cold rain. Back to the East coast I go! P.S. I also LOVE your blog!

  18. Welcome to Scottsdale!! I’m so excited! I’ve been following you for a while now and I think this is the first time I’ve commented. I have a little girl, she just turned 2 yesterday. Most of the fun kid stuff has already been mentioned. McCormick Railroad is a favorite, Zoolights is great to break out the sweater and boots and kids love all the lights, and we love hiking all the mountains in Scottsdale during the perfect winter weather. You’re so lucky to move to a new place and already have all your blogger lovelies dying to befriend you ;)

  19. You know, people never believe me but I always say Arizona is one of my favorite places I have ever been! I’m glad you like it! I don’t have any Scottsdale specific activities to recommend, but the last time I was there I went horseback riding in a ghost town – very fun – and also went to this restaurant called Rustler’s Rooste in Tempe (I think nearby Scottsdale?) where you go inside via slide! Dorky name, I know but pretty fun especially for kids!

  20. Welcome to the neighborhood! I live in North Scottsdale as well. If your son likes sweets, It’Sugar is the best candy store in town. Rawhide is great Old Western themed activity park and town that I used to love growing up here (you can pan for gold!). As You Wish is a fantastic paint your own pottery piece place that is located near by. Enjoy exploring!

  21. Thanks so much ladies!! You are so sweet and helpful, I am so lucky to have you all. Makes moving so much easier! I think maybe we need to have an event and all get together or something!? Good idea?

    • YES! lol, I am in Gilbert, and I was hoping you were going to say you moved closer to me :) I was also going to mention all of the same places everyone else said. Oh yeah, don’t forget about Sprinkles cupcakes at Fashion Square! If you like them on FB (the corporate and the local Scottsdale page), they post secret words you can whisper for free cupcakes! I think a meet-up is def in order for all of us locals! We could even do a park with all the kids? Playtopia in Tumbleweed park in Chandler is off the chain haha! Seriously, this park is amazing! Hope AZ treats you well. If you miss the snow, take a day trip up to Flagstaff. Oh ya, and there is also the North Pole Experience, and the Polar Express you can do as some fun family activities to get in the mood for Christmas!

  22. I’ll just ditto to everyone else’s comments on here. I moved from Idaho about 9 months ago, and I can’t believe how much they have for kids here! It’s awesome! During the summer all of the splash pads are awesome. We go to the library for story/song time, and my daughter loves it. It would be fun to meet up sometime! Also another thing right now…the temple is beautiful with all of the lights and displays. :)

  23. Hi Cara! Congrats on the move. Hope you get accustomed to your new surroundings quickly and have a very merry Christmas. If you ever get a opportunity, meet Danton Thompson of Spa Lamar in Scottsdale. I met him fifteen years ago at a Mary Kay eye makeup design class in Eugene, Oregon. He still works a great deal with Mary Kay consultants and is also a celebrity makeup artist. His second book will be coming out soon and many of us can hardly wait!! Talk to him about it and maybe he’ll let you give it a plug. He is a warm, wonderful man with a great sense of humor. Now you’ll have one more friend in Scottsdale!

    • Welcome to Az from a fellow Make Up Artist. I would love to meet you and am so happy to have found your sight. If there is anything I can do to help make your transition easier please let me know. My new web sight will be up and running in a couple of weeks and would love to do an interview with you. I know my members would be thrilled. I can be reached at Spa and Salon Lamar in Scottsdale. Lets get together and talk shop.

  24. Hi Cara!!

I am so glad you are liking some parts of Arizona! I grew up on a ranch out there near Prescott… my dad is a cattle rancher. I live in LA currently and am going to school for photography out here. I come home during the breaks though! I’d love to do a collaboration with you! I could take do a photo shoot of you on the ranch! If you want to check out my photography, you can visit my website at emilygoswick.com

Love your blog so much! You are so amazing and helpful.

Would love for you to check out my blog too. I think you’d like it :)

    Have a good night sweetie!

  25. Check out the store Last Chance.. Especially if your a bargain shopper, you’ll be in love!! There’s only ONE of them I’m pretty sure and AZ is lucky to have it! (I’m born and raised in AZ, but moved to CA and that’s one place I miss on a regular basis!) It’s like Nordstrom Rack, but cheaper! And a little more crazy! If you like BBQ check out Joes Real BBQ or Joes Farm Grill, best BBQ you will ever eat! Or if your up for a 30 minute drive to eat go to Rudy’s on Chandler Blvd.. So good!! For the best pizza go to Spinatos! For the best sub sandwhich go to Steve’s or Ned’s Krazy Sub.. I crave it on a daily basis. A few other restraunts that are good that may or may not only be in AZ (I’m not for sure) are Liberty Market, LoLo’s, BJ’s, Oreganos, and Culinary Drop Out. Tempe Makertplace or San Tan Village can be a fun place to walk around shop, see a movie, eat, and they have little play grounds for your little man. There’s places like Bounce U or Jumpstreet you can take him to play also. There’s an aquirium at Arizona Mills, plus the only H&M in AZ is there too. It will be a little bit of a drive but there’s a dollar theatre at Superstition Springs Mall as well as a Carosel if your little one likes movies. You can go miniature golfing at Golfland/Sunsplash, it’s kid friendly and have a huge playground and the water park during the summer. For a cheap but fun for kids day you can check out Discovery Park it’s huge with playgrounds and walk ways and you can see the new Gilbert temple, and its just pretty (it’s by San Tan Village, again a bit of a drive from North Scottsdale, but the freeways are all connected in basically one huge circle around the whole valley so unless there’s bad traffic the drives really aren’t that bad.) Another big nice park is Freestone in Gilbert, there’s a train you can ride there too and feed the ducks. There’s tons of parks everywhere and I’m pretty sure all the Malls have little play areas for the kids! These are all the things I could think of and some of the things I miss most about living in AZ! Enjoy!

  26. Ahhhh welcome to AZ! I’ve only lived in the southeast part and now Flagstaff for college, so I can’t really recommend anything for Scottsdale except for Fashion Square ;)

  27. Go to Le Grande orange!! They have the BEST breakfast, brunch, or even dinner! They also have a whole bakery! Breakfast and brunch are in a cute chic room they serve breakfast sandwiches, eggs, crepes, ect. For dinner they have the BEST Italian pizza I have ever had in my life!! The pizza is so fresh and delicious!! You will love it!!
And yes, Last Chance- of course!

  28. I just found you via Pinterest today. We live in north Glendale. I’ve been here for most of my life. I’m an outdoors girl. There are numerous hiking trails that are spectacular! You can hike, horseback ride, run, whatever. We love to go up north to the mountains. It should snow soon up north, love to take the kids sledding, snowboarding! The Grand Canyon is the best, but don’t go just to look at it, that’s boring…..hike down in it or take a rafting trip. That should be on everyone’s bucket list. Summer here can be long, but that’s when we vacation! I have a Khristian too, but she is 21 :) ENJOY AZ!!!

  29. You are an amazing makeup artist!! What cosmetology school did you go to? I dont want to do makeup for a career but I was thinking about going to cosmetology school for fun. =)

  30. I just found your blog and I love it. I really want to be more adventurous with my makeup! I was born and raised in arizona and I LOVE it there. Now I live in Hawaii, but I always love going home :)

  31. I live in AZ too!!! I have lived here a long time and my husband and I LOVE it here! My kids love the Science Center, Phoenix Zoo, Mccormick-Stillman Train Park, The Aquarium at AZ Mills Mall, Papago Park (hiking), Sunsplash or Wet n’ Wild (only open in the summer), Arizona Museum for Youth, Arizona Museum of Natural History, Speedway go cart racing, Pump it Up, Makutu’s Island, Bearizona is amazing you could stop in Flagstaff and hangout there for awhile too to get out of the heat or see some snow in the winter.

  32. Hey Cara, congrats on your move and welcome to North Scottsdale! You happened to move to one of the most gorgeous towns in the Southwest. I bounce between Scottsdale and California regulary due to work (baseball). I used to live in Grayhawk area. It’s a great area to live and raise a family between weather, sports, and the amounts of activities/events. A few of the ladies above mentioned a lot of great kid friendly places; my 3 year loves those places. El Encanto in Cave Creek is a cool mexican restaurants with a great atmosphere (marachi band, pond with ducks – sit outside or sit inside against the glass and your son will love watching the ducks). If you have any questions about North Scottsdale or the Phoenix area, feel free to contact me. I’m there at least once a month and have a lot of friends in the sports community out there (baseball, golf and hockey). Enjoy and Happy Holidays! ~ Amara

  33. I just have to say u are fabulous! I love all your posts! You are so inspiring. Who does your coloring? My sister just moved to the salt lake area and is looking for someone. Do u know of anyone sound here you would refer her to with good pricing?

  34. Welcome to Arizona!! There is so much to do here, especially during these cooler months. Head up north and you will get INSTANT Christmas, lots of snow and activities. They also have a Santas Workshop that is ADORABLE. As well as everything else everyone has said, check out Glendale Glitters in downtown Glendale. Have fun!

  35. I used to work in scottsdale right by the mall. Stax is a great place to eat in that area, awesome burgers but a lot of different kinds of meat. Sugar bowl is the best dessert place!!

  36. Welcome to Scottsdale! I have only been on your site a few times, but I love what I see. I am a native of North Scottsdale, so here are some fun things to see/do in Arizona.
    1. Go up to Cave Creek and Carefree – They have fun little shops and restaurants to visit.
    2. Go to Sedona and Flagstaff. This is where we have snow. You will need a sweater. If you are brave (long drive), visit the Grand Canyon. Currently it is freezing up there, and it is windy.
    3. We have great restaurants in Maricopa County. In Scottsdale though we have Grassroots (Hayden and Via de Ventura; Southern Coastal food), Roaring Fork (Scottsdale and Goldwater), Melting Pot (Royal Palms and Hayden), and Olive and Ivy (next to Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall). In Phoenix, especially on Camelback Road, there are many great spots like Dos Los Molinos.
    4. Old Town Scottsdale.
    5. We have great horse shows at West World (101 N. and Frank Lloyd Wright).
    Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show – February 14, 2013 — February 24, 2013.
    6. Due to our fantastic weather, walking, jogging, and bicycling are also very popular.
    7. I will give you a few warnings though and these are not meant to scare you. A.) If you leave your shoes outside or you have scorpions in your neighborhood, make sure to check the shoe before you put it on; B.) if you are out for a walk and see a coyote, make a lot of noise – they are more scared of you; C.) when venturing to certain parts of Phoenix (westside, southside) be careful who you honk at; D.) when it gets warm and you want to jump in the pool, wear sunscreen and do not stay in the sun for too long or you will turn red.
Other than that, you have moved to a great state and I hope you enjoy it.

  37. Just found your site-
How absolutely adorable are you! I love your VS tut btw. I too live in AZ North Phoenix. LOVE. love it here. There is soo much to do, even during the hottest months. The hiking is AMAZING, the shopping is AMAZING and you will meet some of the coolest people ever. Not sure if you would be interested, but if you are at all into yoga, Vinyasa flow, Holy yoga, hot I know some great places.
    Welcome to the desert.
    XO

  38. Oh and I almost forgot- the hubs and I are into the local AZ CrossFitting community (and if you haven’t heard of it you will soon) so if you become interested in that I can recommend some good CF gyms.
    :)

  39. Howdy!
